Lesson Idea Name: Multiplication Tables

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE CLUSTER # 3: MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE WITHIN 100.

Mathematically proficient students communicate precisely by engaging in discussion about their
reasoning using appropriate mathematical language. The terms students should learn to use with
increasing precision with this cluster are: operation, multiply, divide, factor, product, quotient,
unknown, strategies, reasonableness, mental computation, property.
MGSE3.OA.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the
relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows
40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all
products of two one-digit numbers.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1 – Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Due to the nature of the technology and the quick speed of this game, students with certain disabilities will
need more guidance and adaptable ways to participate. For students who need special auditory learning, I
would read the problems out loud for them as they play. For students who might not be able to process the
information quick enough to compete, I could have a paper and pencil version of practice for them to
participate in.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Because this is more of a “quiz” type style of assessment, this is material that the students should have
already been practicing in class. They have been slowly learning their times tables and focusing on
memorizing them. In class, they have been learning about multiplication and what it means. This should not
be anything new for them, but instead will be a new form of practice for them to experience in a fun way.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

This is a quick game style activity that is done online. The students will be instructed to go to the Kahoot
website and enter the game pin that is provided by the teacher. Then, they will use whatever technological
device they have access to (computer, phone, tablet) to answer the questions and play the game. Throughout
the game, both the student and teacher will monitor points and standings to get immediate feedback on their
progress.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

1. 7 x 4 = ?

2. 5 x 6 = ?

3. 8 x 4 = ?

4. 9 x 7 = ?

5. 6 x 9 = ?

6. 9 x 8 = ?

7. 3 x 4 = ?

8. 10 x 2 = ?

9. 7 x 2 = ?

10. 9 x 3 = ?

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?

Due to the fact that this is a game where points are earned for correct answers, the site will provide students
with immediate feedback after each question. They will know whether they were right or wrong and will also
earn points depending on how quickly they were able to respond, giving them feedback on their
memorization skills also.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity, the teacher should review the problems and make sure the class is caught up and aware of
the problems that they missed. Students should have the opportunity to ask questions for clarification.

How will the data be used?

Although this is not a serious assignment that will impact the students’ grades, this is a great way to monitor
their individual progress. Both the teacher and the student can look at the standings to see how many
questions they got right and how long it took to answer them. This data can be used to to identify which
students might need remediation with multiplication as opposed to which students have mastered it and can
move on to higher level, application levels of thinking.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Personally, I hope that this will be a motivator for the students to want to perform better. The competitive
nature of the game will hopefully keep them energized and engaged as they attempt to compete for the
highest score. Although it is not taken too seriously, it is a great way for the kids to see how truly comfortable
they are with their multiplication. The great thing about Kahoot is that it offers points for correct answers and
makes students feel rewarded for what they know. Hopefully, that would encourage all of the students to be
the best they can be.

Reflective Practice:

Overall, I believe that this is a twist on a simple subject that can become extremely tedious and repetitive for
students over time. Multiplication table testing is often done with paper and pencil in silent and individualized
settings which can be extremely difficult for young children with short attention spans. This is a great way to
keep the kids engaged and holds them accountable for participating. They still are thinking and challenging
themselves without even realizing it. Making this a regular activity in the classroom would hopefully lead to
meeting the year-long goal that is listed in the standards. Because this is a generalized topic, students might
fall at different levels of comprehension throughout the year. However, it is extremely significant for all
students to become comfortable with their multiplication tables in order to move on to applying
multiplication through operations and properties. Whether it is remediation or reinforcement, the kids will be
much better off knowing that they can remain confident in their calculations as they advance.
