1.1. CHANGING FACE OF CLASSROOM

The development of the information society and the widespread dissemination
of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) gives rise to new opportunities
for learning and acquiring new digital skills and competencies. As our societies
become more knowledge-based what people need to learn and know also changes?
The use of ICT in education generate a set of transformation which modify the
curriculum, organisation, student and the role of teacher. Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) provides revolutionary opportunity in educational
system. It influences from elementary to higher education in different level. When this
ICT uses within a classroom the environment of classroom changes automatically.
Thus, smart classroom emphasizes on learning the concepts with the help of visuals
and activities.
Now a days the role of the teacher and the students both have changed. Students
today are no more passive listener, but they are active participants who demand for an
interactive classroom to express their ideas feelings and emotions freely. The audio-
visual depictions of the concept enables the learner to relate the concept with their
daily life and develops better understanding of them. Teacher now is a facilitator who
provides the children scaffolding and the children build up their own building of
imagination and creativity. Mind of children are designed in such a way that they have
better understanding of new technology. Based on this perception smart classes have
been incorporated in the field of education.
2. OBJECTIVE OF THE PAPER

3. CONCEPT OF CLASSROOM
4. ORIGIN OF SMART CLASSES-
In 1986 David Martin and Nancy Knowlton came up with an idea of launching
a product. A year later, SMART was founded. The company basically deals with
projectors and later develop smart board Interactive whiteboards for classroom
learning.

4.1 CONCEPT OF SMART CLASSROOM:

Formal education without classroom is unthinkable. In the ancient period
classroom is Gurukul room or under Gurukul tree. The teacher delivers lectures and
students learn by listening. There was no any written or printed material. With the
passage of time and progress in life, this system was replaced by modernize culture.
Teaching learning procedure develops gradually. New methods of teaching have been
introduced and today we witness one of the most versatile gifts of science known as
'SMART CLASS'. Modern educational system always gives priority to learn
psychology like as need, capacity, I.Q etc and technology also help educational system
to make learning joyful, scientific, psychological informative, opportunistic.
Smart classroom aims at developing the students learning ability as the entire
chapters become more interesting to study and hence improve the results of the student.
The smart classroom adds a new generation educational product which helps students
gain more marks and is a step to the future of education.

4.2 DEFINITION OF SMART CLASSROOM:

 Smart classroom is technology enhanced classrooms or electronically enhance lecture
theatres and classroom that foster opportunities for teaching and learning by integrating
learning and technology such as computers, specialised software, audience response to,
assistive listening devices, networking and audio-visual capabilities.
 Smart classrooms are the amalgamation of Technology used at the teacher’s desk and
in front of the classroom technology in the hand of the students and physical
environment that allows the successful use of the technology. In other words, smart
classroom is a classroom has an instructor equipped with computer and audio-visual
equipment’s allowing the instructor to teach using a wide variety of media. These
include smart Interactive whiteboard, DVDs, PPTs and more, all display through a data
project.
 Smart classroom helps teacher to ensure that every student in the class is learning, given
the wide diversity of learning styles in the classroom.
 Smart class simplifies the problems of teaching abstract curriculum concept that are
difficult for students to visualise by relating through the provision of three-dimensional
interactive multimedia modules.
5. TYPES OF SMART CLASSROOM:

5.1 Based on the equipment available smart classrooms can be categorised as follows:
 Basic Smart Classes:
The classrooms with basic smart technology include gadgets like laptops or
computers, projectors, DVD or VCD player and a viewing screen etc.
 Intermediate Smart Classes:
The intermediate smart classrooms are one step ahead of the basic technology
smart classrooms. They include gadgets like a smart podium with control panel
in addition to laptop, projector, screen and DVD or VCD player etc.
 Advanced Smart Classes:
The advanced smart classrooms have all the gadgets of a basic or intermediate
smart classroom, but their features are very advanced, that is, they use the
newest technology.

5.2 Smart Classrooms can also divide in three distinct categories as:
 The Instructor Workstation Classroom:
It is very much like a traditional classroom with individual student desks,
whiteboards on the walls and an instructor lectern or table at the front.
 The Workgroup Laboratory:
It is a classroom with a small number of computers that groups of students
share. Typically, there is an instructor workstation at the front coupled to a
projection device for demonstration purposes.
 Hands-on-Laboratory:
In this classroom each student sits at an individual computer. The instructor
will typically have a presentation workstation, and students will follow along
with an instructor demonstration, or observe first then perform a classroom
learning activity at their computer.
6. COMPONENTS OF SMART CLASS

comfortable and confident. In a digital classroom a desktop or laptop acts as the central
system that stores information and also essential for managing lessons.

6.2 Interactive Whiteboard

Whiteboards have replaced the traditional black boards and a digital classroom without
an interactive white board is incomplete. A teacher can project any subject on the
touch-sensitive whiteboard surface with the help of a projector and a computer; they
can conduct lessons using their finger or with a pen or stylus. Made to match with the
growing exposure of children to smart phone and other technology, the whiteboard
comes with an exciting range of features that add a sense of excitement to each
classroom session.

6.3 Projector
A projector connected to a computer or laptop can display the content on a computer’s
screen on to a whiteboard or a screen.

6.4 Digital Camera

Teachers can use digital cameras to enhance education inside and outside of the
classroom. Digital cameras make learning a fun and cognitive experience as the lessons
require students to plan what pictures to take during various events such as field trips,
visits to historical or geographical areas of importance and more, thus improving their
learning experience.

6.5 Graphic Tablets

Tablets and e-readers are very popular with students. These devices not only encourage
reading, but also gives students the option to refresh their lessons at any given time.

6.6 Big Interactive LED/LCD Panels

Digital learning involves 2D and 3D animations, graphics, audio and video
presentations for every subject and a smart classroom that is digitally equipped with
big interactive LED or LCD panels can better project these graphic representations.

recording system, and ample storage space for visualizer, keyboard drawer and more.
7. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SMART CLASSROOMS

Adaptive learning: Any classroom will always have students of different types
of learning abilities in it which often makes it difficult for teachers to make sure that all
of them understand the concepts. The modern approach of adaptive learning gives
students the freedom to learn at their own pace and in the way, they are most
comfortable with. Collaborative learning: Learning through collaboration is one of the
most effective forms of learning. Teaching and learning in isolation are very restrictive
and hinder progress. Learning in groups enhances the scope of learning and develops
critical thinking. Collaborative learning activities include collaborative writing, group
projects, joint problem solving, debates and more. Collaborative learning redefines
traditional student-teacher relationship in the classroom.
7.1 Computing devices:
Computers are readily available in modern classrooms, since they are essential tools
for 21st century students and replace the utilities of pen and paper. They give teachers
the opportunity to enhance their lessons and assist them.
7.2 Mutual respect:
Teachers and students should always have respect for each other. As now the role of
teachers is no longer to be the sage on the stage, students should not forget their value
as they will always receive guidance from them. Also, teachers should encourage
students to speak with confidence and value their opinions.
7.3 Performance-based assessments:
Regular performance-based assessments are carried out by teachers through various
methods which are not restricted to tests. These can be by conducting quizzes and polls.
7.4 Student-centric:
In Smart classrooms, teachers play the role of facilitators. They help students think
critically. Students discover and master new concepts. Student-centric classroom
environments put students’ interests first and are focused on each student’s needs,
abilities and learning styles.
7.5 Students take responsibility of their learning:
As students are encouraged to actively participate in their own learning, they become
responsible for their learning.
7.6 Students understand and follow the rules and procedures:
The learning environment is carefully planned and well-organized. Class rules,
procedures, and notices of upcoming activities are posted in convenient places to help
students stay on track. Students are constantly encouraged to remind them of their goals
and responsibilities. They follow class routines and understand what they are expected
to achieve each day and how they are to go about it.
7.7 There is innovative working system for teachers and in school management:
An attractive classroom environment is needed for such type smart and innovative
activities. Smart school class will be more attractive, innovative, student friendly,
healthy and more interesting class. In a smart class it may possible there to arrange

provide facility to update the content.
9. MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL:
Mudaliar Commission recommended the opening of multipurpose school for giving a
more meaningful and pragmatic bias to education at the secondary stage. It was very
expensive because in multipurpose school requires a special school building, various
types of tools and implements, laboratories, spacious land for farming, workshop,
reading rooms and other reasonable facilities. These things involved heavy expenditure.
Arranging for at least two or more types of location in the school becomes more
expensive. Multipurpose school maybe open as model government institutions only.
The private Institutions cannot run such school. Some courses of the multipurpose
school may be taught in some vocational and industrial institutions. The Synergy can
be created between the general and vocational courses and the two are taught together
in some industrial institutions.

9.1 Problems of multipurpose School:

India needs vocationally trained teachers for multipurpose school but the Indian
universities and teachers training colleges are not producing such teachers. In the
absence of suitable teachers, the multi-purpose schools and vocationalisation of
education are not succeeding. Specially trained teachers for the full implementation of
basic education are required.
