I am writing this to support my application for the MSc.
Business Analytics (with
specialization in Management Science). My interest in Business Analytics stemmed from my working experiences, during which I was exposed to different situations in which big data is involved in decision-making at the operation and at the corporate levels. As my long-term career plan involves a switch from a technical position to a managerial role, I aspire to embark on the MSc. Business Analytics to prepare myself for the challenging task of making data-centric decisions. The MSc. Business Analytics (with specialization in Management Science) at UCL is appealing to me for three reasons. Firstly, the programme, with core courses in mathematics and programming, would equip me with powerful tools and instruments essential for the challenging task of evaluating and making sense of big data. Secondly, the programme’s structure would provide me with an overview of how data analysis could be applied in various aspects of business management. Lastly, I am intrigued by the culturally diverse and vibrant environment at the UCL. Through my interaction with students from different background during class and on campus, I would be able to challenge my mindset and enrich my humble experiences. I believe that my academic and professional experiences have prepared me with the skills critical to excel at the MSc. Business Analytics. During my undergraduate study, I challenged myself with the challenging subject of Chemical Engineering and was consistently placed the top 5% of the cohort. The quantitative programme has introduced to me various numerical models, statistical methods and programming tools. I also gained experience with data analytics through extensive lab assignments and research projects. The data that I handled differs from that in real business situations in both quantity and nature, but these experiences in evaluating information would be useful for my Master study. I was particularly interested in MATLAB when I was first exposed to the language during a core class in my freshman year. Despite minimal prior experience with coding, I managed to understand the programming methodology quickly and emerged as one of the top students in the class. After graduation, my job as system engineer involves various coding tasks and operation data collection systems. I am familiar with VBA, SQL and OSI PI platform for data visualization and analysis. I have also familiarized myself with the R programming language. My extensive exposure to analytics tool would allow me to excel as I embark on my MSc. Business Analytics study. My long-term career aspiration involves becoming an expert in managing technologically inclined businesses and R&D. A first step toward this career involves joining a top management consulting firm as an analyst. I believe that the MSc. in Business Analytics (with specialization in Management Science) at UCL would be the perfect step stone for my future career.
