FLUID SYSTEMS, INC. (FSI) began
operations in early 1979 doing
developmental and engineering work
on solids control equipment and mud
Handling systems used on drilling rigs.
FSI’s Corporate Charter was issued on June 16, 1981.
The company has been involved in furthering solids control technology for the
oil industry since its inception. The first equipment introduced by the company was
a line of mud cleaners (hydrocyclones mounted over vibratory screening
equipment) which incorporated the use of linear motion in their design. In the early
1980’s, FSI was one of the first companies to introduce Linear Motion Shakers,
which have become the principal type of shakers in use on drilling rigs and in many
other applications today. FSI also developed a line of pretensioned screen panels,
which give superior life, are resistant to wear and allow for the fastest ‘screen
change’ of any machine in operation at this time.
Another area where the company has done a substantial amount of pioneering
work is in "Zero Discharge" Project’s in environmentally sensitive areas. The
development work accomplished in this area has led to improved systems as well
as cost reductions in the "Closed Loop" drilling environment. This work, to allow
drilling without reserve pits, was done before some of the present environmental
rules and regulations came into existence in the petroleum industry.

How to Calculate Mud Agitator Size
Correct mud agitator horse power sizing is based on a given impeller diameter versus a
given volume and mud weight. If you had a mud tank that was 10’ wide x 8’ deep x 30’
long, you should divide the tank as equally as possible, (divide length by the width) or in
this case, 3 areas that would be 10’ x 10’. If the tank depth is 8’, the normal mud depth
would be 7’ (normal fluid level is 1’ from the top). Therefore, you would have three areas
with a volume of 123.2 BBLS (10’L x 10’W x 7’D x .176 = 123.2 BBLS).
Refer to the Agitator Sizing Chart on the next page and find 123.2 BBLS on the left side,
vertical scale, move horizontally to the right until you intersect the “AXIAL” Impeller
curve. From this point move down vertically to establish the proper impeller diameter
(36”) and turnover time. Turnover time is the time required for the volume of the agitated
area to be projected by the impeller. We have established that a 30 to 90 second
turnover time is acceptable. To have less than a 30 second turnover time would create
vortexing (introducing air into the mud). To have more than a 90 second turnover time
would allow suspended solids to settle.

Therefore, the range in each impeller category (I.e. – 36”) is 30 seconds from left to 90 seconds to the right. The
example yields approximately 58 seconds turnover time. It should be noted that in the active and intermediate
tanks, turnover time should be relatively fast (30 to 60 seconds) because of the high volume of drilled solids in the
active tank and chemical and solids addition I the intermediate tanks, where high shear agitation promotes good
addition. In the suction tank, a longer turnover time (60 to 90 seconds) is desirable, preventing any aeration of the
mud just prior to entering the hole.
Below the impeller diameter are two horse power ratings: one using 20 lb. per gallon mud (mot extreme), and one
using 15 lb. per gallon mud. If the maximum mud weight will never exceed 15LB/gallon, then use that HP for the
given impeller. If the mud weight is not known, then use the 20LB/gallon HP rating.
The answer to the example problem is three 10 HP mud agitators with 36” axial flow impellers.

Experience and planning are the keys to all
successful zero discharge projects.
Environmental Control Technology from Fluid Systems addresses the problems
encountered while planning, designing and drilling in an environmentally-sensitive
area. The environmental aspects of the well require the same kind of attention as
planning the location, designing the casing string, selecting the rig, and so on.
However, the Zero Discharge aspect is, far too often, left to the last moment. The
result? A substantial increase in the cost and liability exposure from high volumes
of material sent for disposal. Be sure to get the greatest level of environmental
control at the lowest possible cost. Call Fluid Systems before planning begins.

Fluid Systems, Inc. uses factory pre-tensioned screen
panels which put an end to “field” installation guessing.
With our Wedgelok™, all it takes to remove a screen
panel is a minute and a hammer. Our simple design does
away with expensive bulky
hardware and “wobbled”
tension bolt holes.

FSI’s flat deck screen panels utilize 100% of your

screening area and eliminate “horse shoe” effect
as well as the need for corrugated style screens.

MFD SERIES SCREEN PANELS
The Fluid Systems, Inc. MFD series of screen panels were designed specifically for near size particle blinding. This
design allows you to drill formations with minimal or no screen blinding. It is particularly effective in sandy clay. In
several cases these screens have out performed the competition’s screens, providing superior volume handling and
excellent life, in situations where these difficult drilled solids are encountered. The performance of these screens on
the Fluid Systems, Inc. mud cleaning equipment has been exceptionally favorable.

CASE HISTORY

Location: Central Louisiana

Equipment: Fluid Systems, Inc. 20HIL-16 desilting mud cleaner.

During drilling operations on this 18,000 foot well, the operator used a total of four (4) Fluid Systems MFD screen
panels during the entire operation. The total screen cost for this piece of equipment was $880.00.

CASE HISTORY

Location: South Louisiana

Equipment: Two (2) Fluid Systems, Inc. Model 500 Linear Shakers
Mud Type: Gel Water
Mud Weight: 9.0
Funnel Viscosity: 40

During the drilling of surface hole the operator encountered a sandy clay formation. At the time, the finest screens
being run were 20 mesh screens which were not original Fluid Systems screens. The maximum pump rate that
could be handled was 550 GPM with a maximum penetration rate of 75 feet per hour. Fluid Systems MFD 50 mesh
screens were installed and after one circulation the pump rate was at 800 GPM with a penetration rate of 150 feet
per hour.

CASE HISTORY

Location: South Texas

Equipment: Two (2) Fluid Systems, Inc Model 500 Linear Shakers
Mud Type: Oil Base
Mud Weight: 11.0 Funnel Viscosity: 50Operator was experiencing screen blinding and could not pump above 300
GPM using 175 mesh screens that were not original Fluid Systems screen panels. Fluid Systems MFD 170 mesh
screens were installed and the operator was able to effectively screen 500 GPM with no screen blinding.

SCREEN PANEL SELECTION

Since shale shakers are the primary stage in proper solids removal, screen selection is very critical. Improper
screen selection can lead to loss of drilling fluids, solids removal equipment overload, premature pump part failures and
serious downhole problems. Shale shakers are only as efficient as the screens that are installed on them. When the
proper screens are selected the shakers will enhance the performance of other down - stream solids removal
equipment. The following manual will give you helpful information on proper screening of your Fluids Systems solids
control equipment. The various tables and charts will aid in the proper screen selection for your application. All Fluid
Systems screens are factory tensioned and bonded to eliminate improper tensioning.

SCREEN TYPES

MF SERIES

The MF series screens are manufactured using tensile bolting cloth. This cloth allows more fluid to be
processed than the market grade cloths used on older style shakers. This enables finer screens to be
utilized during the initial stages of drilling.

MB SERIES

The MB series screens use the same wirecloth as the MF series with the addition of a perforated support
plate. These screens allow for heavier solids loading than the MF series screens. These screens also
allow repairs to be made to damaged sections of the screens. This feature adds longer service life to the
screen panel.

MFD SERIES

The MFD series screens were designed specifically for near size particle blinding. The special
layering and assembly procedures used to manufacture these screens contribute to maximum
deblinding and excellent service life. These screens are particularly effective in screening sand and
sandy clays.

MBHCR SERIES

The MBHCR series screens are manufactured using the patented Cagle HCR cloth. This rectangular
weave allows for maximum fluid processing and optimum solids removal. These screens also utilize the
perforated support plate. These screens are extremely effective in screening synthetic or very viscous
fluids.

Preparing Your Fluid Systems Shaker For Gumbo

Model 50 Shakers

Two (2) 42” x 29” pretensioned screens with wedgelocks

1) Inspect screen support rubbers and replace worn or missing sections.

2) Check shaker deck angle. Shakers are manufactured in a fixed flat position. If they have been modified to be adjustable
set the deck flat. This will ensure that gumbo is conveyed from the shaker properly.

3) Inflate all air springs to 40-50 PSI.

4) Make sure weir diverter grating is in place.

5) Select screens that will allow fluid to cover 3/4 to all of the area on the feed end panel before solids return to the surface.
This can be done while drilling cement if the pump rates and drilling fluid properties are those which will be used during
drilling operations.

6) Distribute flow as equally as possible to all shakers.

7) During drilling operations, keep possum belly as clean as possible. This may be required as often as each connection.
Keeping the possum belly clean will help dampen drilling fluid velocity before reaching the screens.

Preparing Your Fluid Systems Shaker For Gumbo

Model 500 Shakers

Three (3) 42” x 29” pretensioned screens with wedgelocks

1) Inspect screen support rubbers and replace worn or missing sections.

2) Check shaker deck angle. Shakers are manufactured to be adjustable from 5 degrees uphill to 5 degrees
downhill. Deck angle should be set flat. Never set deck angles uphill when drilling gumbo as this will
slow down the conveyanceof gumbo and allow it to dry on the screens and plug the screening area.
.
3) Inflate all air springs to 40-50 PSI.

4) Make sure weir diverter grating is in place.

5) Select screens that will allow fluid to cover all of the area on the feed end panel and 1/2 the area of the middle
before solids return to the surface. This can be done while drilling cement if the pump rates and drilling fluid
properties are those which will be used during drilling operations.

6) Distribute flow as equally as possible to all shakers.

7) During drilling operations, keep possum belly as clean as possible. This may be required as often as each
connection. Keeping the possum belly clean will help dampen drilling fluid velocity before reaching the screens.

Preparing Your Fluid Systems Shaker For Gumbo

Model 50/500 Shakers

Top Deck - Two (2) 42” x 29” pretensioned screen panels with wedgelocks
Bottom Deck - Three (3) 42” x 29” pretensioned screens with wedgelocks

1) The top deck is the Model 50 shaker. Prepare this deck as you would the standard Model 50 deck for gumbo.
This deck is considered the scalping deck and should be screened with screens that effectively handle
circulating volumes while at the same time not allowing gumbo to dry out.

2) The bottom deck is the Model 500 shaker. It should be prepared the same as the standard Model 500 shakers
with the exception of screen selection. This deck should be screened with screens no less than two (2) mesh
sizes finer that that of the top deck. Since the top deck will be removing approximately 75% of the gumbo, this
deck may be inclined slightly to accommodate finer screens if necessary. Take caution not to exceed 2.5
degrees uphill.

3) The possum belly may be dumped on this unit as the dump valve will divert flow to the bottom deck and not into
the sand trap as it would on the standard model shakers.

TIP If by chance the top deck will not handle the desired circulating rate or remove the gumbo efficiently, and the
fluid is only covering one screen on the bottom deck, it is a very good indicator that you have chosen a screen
too coarse to effectively remove gumbo on the top deck. If this is occurring, screen the top deck with the same
screens that are on the bottom deck and chose screens that are at least two (2) mesh sizes finer for the
bottom deck.

GLOSSARY

Area - The total non blanked area of the screen panel measured in square feet.

Blinding - A reduction of the open area in the screen surface caused by particles that have become lodged in
the mesh openings or materials forming a film that covers the mesh openings.

Conductance - The ease with which a fluid can flow through a screen measured in kilodarcies/millimeter.

D50 - The average opening size of the screen measured in microns. This value is used to determine the
separation potential of a screen. Particles this size have a 50% probability of being removed.

D16 & D84 - These are used to indicate the range of opening sizes present in the screen. They can be very
helpful when wanting to remove fines from unweighted mud or preventing barite removal in weighted
mud.

Deblinding Screen - A screen in which the mesh layering prevents most particles that are the same size as
the openings in the top mesh from becoming lodged in the openigs. The interaction of
the two meshes caused by the motion of the shaker also tends to dislodge the paticles
that are partially stuck in the openings.

E.O.A. - Effective Open Area - The resultant percent of open area of the screen panel due to the
combination of mesh layers.

Mesh - The number of openings in the screen cloth measured from the center of one wire to a point 1” distant.

Pretensioned - A screen in which the mesh layers have been stretched to proper tensions during the
manufacturing process and need no further tensioning once installed.

Transmittance - The conductance in combination with the area. This value compares the liquid through put
capacity of screens with different areas.

With our Wedgelok™, all it takes to remove a screen panel is a minute and a hammer. Our
simple design does away with expensive bulky hardware and “wobbled” tension bolt holes.
Fluid Systems manufactures our own line of screen panels in Houston, TX USA. Because FSI
is the Original Equipment Manufacturer, we have an unmatched selection of OEM screen
panels in stock and ready for fast delivery. Our screen panels include “specialty screens” for
de-blinding, high volume handling, high abrasion, sticky clays and many other situations
encountered while screening. Years of stringent quality and manufacturing experience
allows proper screen selection for your application.
We at Fluid Systems believe there is more to the product than simply getting it out the door. Supporting our customers
and their clients is an all important facet of our marketing effort. Our in-house engineers will customize our screening
equipment to fit your needs at little to no cost. We can be reached at the following locations:
