Introduction
Welcome to Mr. Martinez’s Classroom Management Plan Portfolio!

This Classroom Management Plan portfolio is a roadmap geared toward 5th

grade success. However, this Classroom Management Plan can also be implemented

in other grades with the correct modifications. I have not planned for a specific

content area as this plan can be implemented regardless of the subject taught.

Within this portfolio, I will illustrate my philosophy statement, what will happen

during the first day(s) of class and how I envision my classroom environment. I will

discuss classroom safety, policies, and procedures. I will also address what

discipline system I will have in place and the steps I plan on taking towards

minimizing misbehaviors. I plan on using different strategies and procedures to

motivate a single student as well as the whole classroom. Working on this project

has been very enlightening. I feel that I have gained a new insight into what I can

expect for my first year in the classroom. I understand that depending on the

school and district I am hired for, I cannot truly know what is to come. However, I

will make the best of this Classroom Management Plan to ensure that I have a

foothold on my first year of teaching. Working on the projects has also allowed me

to envision my future classroom’s success.

Philosophy Statement
I believe that it is my duty as a teacher to create a safe and welcoming

environment for students to walk into. Students should feel as part of a community

and comfortable in the classroom. The students should be engaged in a positive and

high-energy environment to ensure success. I feel like I connect more with Fredric

Jones’ Positive classroom Management style as well as Howard Gardner’s Multiple

Intelligence Theory and I would work towards implement both styles into my

classroom.

I plan on meeting students at their academic level upon arrival and work with

them using the Whole brain teaching strategy to guide them in finding their best

learning styles to become successful. The Whole Brain Teaching is a teaching style

that engages the students kinetically in the classroom environment. The students

are taught using different senses to maintain maximum content retention. I want

my students to become enthusiastic about learning and be engaged in the process

of learning important skill. I plan on teaching skills that would allow each student to

succeed academically and that could be used out in the real world. I want students

to be able to remember the skills and strategies I teach 20 years from now.

If kids come to us from strong, healthy, functioning families, it makes our job easier. If they do not
come to use from strong, healthy, functioning families, it makes our hob more important.
-Barbara Colorose
First Day(s)
On the first day of school, I will:

1. Be waiting at the door to great and shake hands with each student
individually.
2. Hand each student a number written on an index card and a sheet of
cardstock paper.
3. Instruct the students to look at the smartboard/projector/document
camera to locate their assigned seats (these assigned seats will change
frequently) and directions on what to do with the cardstock paper.
a. The directions for the cardstock paper are:
i. Take the sheet of cardstock paper and fold it longways like a
hotdog, so it will look like a tent when you stand it at the front
of your desk.
ii. You can use markers, crayons, or coloring pencils to write you
name.
iii. You may also draw or color the sheet of paper (drawings should
be school appropriate).
iv. You will have until announcements are over to complete your
name plate and place them at the front of your desk, so I can
learn your names.

When the announcements are finished I will:

Introduce myself to the class. I will say:

“Hello class! My name is Mr. Martinez. I will be your 5th grade teacher for this
school year! I am so excited that you all have been specifically chosen to be in my
very first class for my first year of teaching! To begin, I would like to tell you a
little about myself. I have just graduated with my Bachelor’s degree from the
University of Houston. GO COOGS! I was born and raised here in Houston. I am
married, and I have two daughters, the oldest one is in PreK right now. The
furthest I have traveled, was to Lima Peru, in South America. I am the oldest of
six children.”

We will play Human Bingo:

1. “I would like for us to become a community of learners, but we would have to
get to know one another first. For our first activity, I have planned for us to
do a Human Bingo! Now, the rules are simple”:
a. I will pass out the sheets of paper and you will write you name at the
top.
b. Wait until everyone has a sheet of paper and I say go.
c. When we are ready, your job is to become a detective!
d. It is you job to find a person that matches with what is in the boxes.
e. Once you have found them, have them sign their whole names on the
lines at the bottom.
2. When the students have gotten all their boxes signed, they are to return to
their seats. I will have the students share one or two things that they
thought was interesting about this experience or what was interesting about
the results.

Student interest survey:

I will also ask the students to complete a survey of their interest and
preferences. This will help me get to know the students a bit more.

Whole Brain Teaching Introduction:

Once the students have finished the survey I will introduce Whole Brain Teaching.
I see Whole Brain Teaching as a teaching strategy that allows students to become
engaged in the lesson through stimulating one or more of the student’s senses. On
the first day of class, I will discuss:

1. Please – Okay
2. Class – Yes
3. Mirror Words
4. Teach—Okay
5. Scoreboard
6. The 5 rules:
a. Follow directions quickly
b. Raise your hand to speak
c. Raise your hand to leave your seat
d. Make smart choices
e. Keep your dear teacher happy!

Flip Book, Parent Letter, and Parent Survey
To communicate with parents, I plan on having a parent letter ready to hand
out to students before they leave my class on the first day. I will also be creating
a flip book that consist of important information the parents should have in one
simple place. It will be similar to the ones in the pictures below with a few changes.
Teacher contact and conference information will be on the first page. These will be
available for the meet the teacher night.

Parent Letter
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

Welcome to Cub Elementary! My name is Eddy Martinez and I will be your child’s
teacher for this year. During the school year, we will be working on a rigorous and
exciting curriculum that is designed to prepare your student for middle and high
school, and ultimately college.

I believe that to properly prepare a student to succeed in the classroom, we must

create a working community around them. I will have an open-door policy for my
parents to come in and discuss any worries or concerns that you might have
regarding your child’s work, progress, or any other issues. As parents, you can
contribute to the academic development and achievement of your child in the
following areas:

Attendance: Being present daily is extremely important to your child’s academic

success.

Homework: Ensuring that your child complete any homework will also increase their
understanding of the content.

Communication: Please know that you can reach me by calling the main office
number, sending a note with your child, or by email. Also, please fill out my parent
survey so I can know how to best reach you. Your child will have a folder where
they will keep any homework and important information that I need to share with
you. Please check this folder daily.

I am honored to have the opportunity to be a contributor to your child’s education.

With your support, we can work together to ensure that your child has a successful
academic year. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Mr. Martinez

Classroom Environment and Class Safety
I plan on creating a welcoming and comfortable classroom through my seating plan
shown below. Students will have the opportunity every Friday to choose new seats
for the following week. To accomplish this, I will be using different methods for
choosing which students get to choose first while ensuring that different students
have first pick. To maintain a safe environment, there will be sufficient space to
allow for foot traffic. The classroom rooster will be inside the fire manual at the
door in case of a fire or fire drill. During the first week, students will be reminded
that the first aid container will be kept on the self next to the teachers’ desk,
where it is easy accessible. There will be a library, where students can take turns
sitting and reading during our daily drop everything and read, as well as when they
have completed and turned in all classwork.

Classroom Policies and Procedures
In this classroom, we will be following many classroom policies/procedures to
ensure everyone is successful.

Entering Classroom:

1. Moring students will enter the classroom, place homework in the bin on my desk
and begin working on the warm-up.
2. Afternoon students will line up outside of the door until I say they may enter.
o Students will enter quietly, place homework in bin on my desk and begin
on the warm-up.

Changing Classes:

1. For class changing, the student will form a straight line, in alphabetical order,
and get “hallway ready”. This means stay in a straight line and stay quiet.
2. The students will head to their next class and wait at the door against the wall
until the teacher lets them in.

Hand Signals:

1. Restroom (R in sign)
2. Trash (T in sign)
3. Water (W in sign)
4. UH COOGS –silence
5. Raising hand – for questions

Restroom Procedure:

1. Students will be allowed to use the restroom after their warm-up is complete.
2. Students will NOT be allowed to use the restroom during instruction unless it is
an absolute emergency.

Drills:

1. Students will follow directions.

2. Line up silently, swiftly, and absolute silence.

Homework:

1. Students are responsible for completing and returning homework at the

discussed time.
2. The students will place homework in the homework bin on the teachers’ desk.

Classroom Managers:

1. Students will be chosen by different means to become a classroom manager.

2. Each manager will be in charge of a specific task, such as:
a. Passing out warm-up folders
b. Passing out journals
c. Picking up papers
d. Sharpening pencils
e. Maintaining the classroom disciplinary folder
Discipline system and steps to address misbehavior
At the beginning of the school year, I will have a set of Whole Brain Teaching
rules that I will share with the students, as well as, additional rules in which the
students will help create. This will be our Contract/Constitution in which the
students will then sign. Whole Brain Teaching relies on students need to move, so I
will be ignoring these types of movements. However, I will address excessive
talking during instructional time. Threats or physical violence will warrant a trip to
the principal’s office.

Whole Brain Teaching rules:

1. Follow directions quickly.

2. Raise your hand to speak.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Make smart choices.
5. Keep your dear teacher happy.

Classroom Created Rules:

1. We will respect ourselves.

2. We will respect our teacher.
3. We will respect our community.
4. We will respect our environment.
5. …

Positive consequences:

1. Verbal praise
2. Good phone call/note home
3. A mark on the students’ side of the tally mark chart.
a. The marks on the students’ side is for students doing a good job,
staying on task, etc. The more marks on the teachers side the better
the outcome.
4. Students can earn stars to level up a ladder system and go from novices to
legends.
a. Each level the students move up entails different prizes.
b. For example, after filling six stars, the students will level up, and
receive five extra minutes of recess, extra comfy time, extra reading
time.

Steps in the discipline system:

1. Verbal warning
2. Tally mark on the teachers’ side of the tally chart.
a. If the students are not following the rules, a mark is made on the
teacher’s side of the Tally Chart. The more tally marks on the
teacher’s side, the severity of the consequences.
3. Silent lunch
4. Note sent home
5. Call home
6. Should students not turn in their homework then they will not be having
recess. Instead the student will be using the time during recess to complete
missing homework.
Student Motivation
To keep students motivated, I plan on instituting different student activities such
as:

1. Flexible seating: students can change seats each week.

2. Comfy time: students can sit anywhere to read, write, or take notes.
3. Reward system: Tally Chart, Level up
4. Class Craft: similar to ClassDojo, Class Craft is a program geared to higher
elementary, where the students can:
a. Create and design their own avatars.
b. Go on missions for experience point, gold, Boss Battles.
c. This can also be used as a negative reinforcement.

Classroom Engagement
To engage the class in learning I plan on using the Whole Brain Teaching technique.
This technique requires students to move and talk. During lessons, I will be using
the “mirror hand” strategy which requires students to “mirror” my hand gestures,
voice, and movements. Then, I will give the students a chance to talk with their
table mates when I say “teach” and the students will respond “okay!”. The students
will face each other and take turns teaching the content, I taught, to each other.
Sometimes I will use a different voice or silly movement the student must repeat
when I have them teach.

Another way I plan on engaging the class is through the use of Class Craft. As
mentioned before, Class Craft is similar to ClassDojo. The students would all have
access to this program which is paid for by me. Each class will be a group and
within each class, students will be grouped into smaller groups. The purpose of
Class Craft is to:

1. Promote collaboration
2. Create social settings
3. Build teamwork
4. Create critical thinkers
5. Communicate between teacher and students
