COUNTRY : KUWAIT
COMMITTEE : DISEC
AGENDA : SITUATION IN UKRAINE AND CRIMEA
DELEGATE : R HARSITA
COLLEGE : SRM INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, VADAPALANI

INTRODUCTION

The recent invasion of the Crimea by the Russian Federation is a

clear example of blatant denial of a nation’s sovereignty in addition
to a severe violation of international law. This could not have been
more pointedly illustrated than the dispatching of 16,000 Russian
troops supported by large compliment of air crafts, boats and
helicopters to flood the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
Several nations including the USA see this as an act of naked
aggression towards the western world. However till date Ukraine has
not engaged in a military action as so to avoid conflict, whilst the
Russians are in occupation of this zone. In order to avoid another
standoff similar to the cold war and to avoid a potential all out
military crisis. A peaceful solution to avoid this is an unavoidable
MUST.

STAND
My nation is a small country with a big heart. My country has a
strong record of assisting people in need, and Kuwaiti organizations
are actively responding to humanitarian crises. Kuwait has also
played a leading role through its generous funding for the
humanitarian work of the United Nations. Through its example and
its convening power, my country has doubled its annual contribution
to the Central Emergency Response Fund (Cerf) from $500,000
(Dh1.83million) to $1 million in order support the multilateral
humanitarian response and meeting emergency needs. It contributed
US$2 million to the United Nations World Food Programme(WFP) to
bring help to desperately-needed food to thousands of Iraqi families
displaced from their homes due to the conflict that started in
Mosul.
My country has always stood up for the nations in trouble. It has
been in good relations with Ukraine, it served the nation with USD 11
million during the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Several bilateral
agreements including a treaty to avoid double taxation and others in
the fields of sports, culture investment has been singed between
two countries helping both the government to prosper.

VIEWS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTION

My government unanimously believes that it’s a violation of

territorial sovereignty of some other nation’s land which may lead to
devastation and furthermore to a frozen war. Kuwait strongly
believes that steps should be taken by the international community
in order to overcome this situation.
 As a starting point, the UN Secretary General should use his
good offices to initiate negotiations to try to avoid war.
 A mediator could potentially draw on China and other major
powers to persuade Russia to step back while at the same
time discouraging Ukraine from exercising its right to self-
defense under international law.
