Engine Oil Pump - Disassemble

SMCS - 1304-015

Disassembly Procedure
Start By:

a. Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove".

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove bolt (1) that fastens gear (2) in position on the shaft.

2. Remove gear (2) from the shaft with Tool (A).

3. Remove key (3) from the shaft.

4. Remove four bolts and cover (4). Remove two bolts (8) and retainer (7). Remove spring (6) and
plunger (5) from the oil pump housing. Inspect the ring on plunger (5). Replace the ring if the ring is
damaged.

5. Use Tool (B) to remove two bearings (9) from cover (4), if the cover is equipped with bearings.

6. Remove two shaft assemblies (10) from the oil pump body.

7. Use Tool (B) to remove two bearings (12) from the oil pump body. Remove two dowels (13) from the
oil pump body.

1. Remove the bolt and the washer that holds the drive gear (1) on the shaft.

2. Use Tooling (A) to remove the shaft. Remove the key from the shaft. Put alignment marks on the
pump in order to assemble the gear and the shaft properly.

3. Remove retainer (3) from the bypass valve. Remove the spring and the bypass valve.

4. Remove bolts (4) from the pump body. Remove the pump body (2).

5. Use Tooling (B) to remove the bearing from the pump body (2).

6. Remove gear (7). Put identifying marks on the gears in order to be installed properly.

7. Remove spacer (6) from the main oil pump body (5). Use Tooling (B) to remove the bearing from the
spacer (6).

Note: Check condition of the spacer and the bearings. If the spacer or the bearings are damaged use
new parts for replacement.

8. Remove the gears from the main oil pump body (5).

9. Use Tooling (B) to remove the bearings from the main oil pump body.
