EXPERIMENT-1
VALVE TIMING DIAGRAM OF AN I.C ENGINE
Aim: To draw the valve timing diagram of a four stroke single cylinder IC (diesel) engine.

Apparatus: 4 stroke IC engine (Diesel) with flywheel.

Procedure:

1. Bring the flywheel to the TDC position to start the cycle.

2. Rotate the flywheel slowly in the direction of rotation (CW), the inlet valve begins to open
and mark the crank angle reading from the wheel.
3. Rotate the flywheel further and the inlet valve will be closing slowly as rotation continues.
4. At certain crank angle, inlet valve will be closed completely and note down the reading.
5. The point from which the inlet valve open to close, consider as a suction stroke.
6. Bring the flywheel to TDC to complete compression stroke.
7. Rotate the flywheel further and observe the opening of exhaust valve, mark the crank angle
reading from wheel.
8. The region between TDC and the point where exhaust valve begins to open is called as
power stroke.
9. As continues the flywheel rotation, at certain point exhaust will be closed slowly and wait
until it closes completely, take down the reading.

10. The region from exhaust valve open to close, called as exhaust stroke.
11. From the above crank angle reading, draw the valve timing diagram and show all the valve
sequence and strokes.

Result: Hence the Valve Timing Diagram of a four stroke single cylinder IC (diesel) engine is
drawn.
