President’s Letter
Happy October! Fall is here.
Our November meeting will be a social meeting and will be held at Zeke’s Coffee (4719 Harford Road).
We have the space from 7 PM to 9 PM on November 13th. Coffee will be available and you’re welcome
to bring snacks or desserts to enjoy as we socialize. A short business meeting will be held at 7:30 PM
including a discussion of our bylaws and the election for the 2019 board for the Waltherson
Improvement Association. Please consider joining the board and getting involved. I’ve included descriptions of
the positions in the newsletter and if you have any questions please e-mail us at mailbox@waltherson.org.
In business news, the Children’s Bookstore has moved from Roland Park to Harford Road and is now
located right next to Zeke’s. Please stop by and take a look. It looks like the fight over the Royal Farms
north of us at Harford & Glenmore is winding down. Councilman Dorsey does not believe they will put
in another request to build. He is still working to try and get a mixed use development there but it is
looking like the most likely outcome will be a new CVS with a drive thru pharmacy. The CVS within our
boundaries near Hamilton is slated to close in the near future.
Harford Road and Belair Road will be changing in the very near future. The long delayed Harford Road
Bridge Project is finally on track and the road will close at Herring Run starting Monday, November 19.
Please prepare yourself for detours and alternate routes; the road will be closed for approximately three
years. The Belair Road streetscape project is also moving forward with a meeting on Monday, November
5th. A previous meeting was held on September 19th. Those on NextDoor should have seen the
meetings posted but if you missed this, please let me know and I’ll be happy to send information about
those projects.
It’s come to my attention that MTA will be discontinuing support for SmarTrip and Charmcard in the
near future. This does not appear to have been well communicated. If you use these cards as payment
on MTA, please prepare yourself by carrying cash or setting up the mobile CharmPass app on your
phone.
Kind Regards,
Robert J. Walshe, WIA president

THE HARFORD ROAD BRIDGE IS SCHEDULED CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 19TH
The Harford Road Bridge over the Herring Run between Argonne Drive and Chesterfield
Avenue is being replaced. The bridge will close on Monday, November 19th
Due to the closure, everyone who crosses the bridge currently will have to utilize alternate
routes. The Department of Transportation suggests the two closest options for motorists are
Belair Road to the East, and Hillen Road/Perring Parkway to the West.

The Walthersonian November 2018
In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The
reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel
uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Communities with regular NECOP
patrols, such as the North Harford neighborhood, also see significantly less crime than
communities with inactive patrols.
Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and
an officer will give you a direct number to keep them in contact with the Police. You would then
proceed to patrol the neighborhood in your car. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and
Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. Anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please
contact us at mailbox@waltherson.org.

Get Involved, Join the Waltherson Improvement Association Board
The Waltherson Improvement Association Board is an active group of neighbors who work together to advocate
for the neighborhood. If you would like to get more involved with the neighborhood, consider joining the Board as
an officer. Elections will be held at the November general meeting.
The Board markets neighborhood to potential new neighbors, advocate for schools and families, work together
with the City to address problems like traffic and vacant houses, and promote camaraderie among neighbors.
The Board consists of a President, 1st Vice Preseident, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Parliamentarian,
Sergeant at Arms, and Member-at-Large. Officers serve a one year term, and elections are held at the November
13th general meeting.
Board members gather monthly to discuss and address general concerns of the neighborhood. In between
meetings the board members stay in touch via email and attend community events on behalf of the neighborhood.
The commitment is about 3-5 hours per month.
If you are interested in joining the board, please contact Amy Greensfelder (President, resident of Simms Ave), at
919-407-9044 or Amy@Probonocounseling.Org
