DICKINSON INTERMEDIATE FINE ARTS ACADEMY 

MUSIC DEPARTMENT 
Dear Parents and Students, 
 
This year we have a special performance opportunity for our band and orchestra students . The Indiana State 
School Music Association (ISSMA) has a contest on  Saturday, February 2, 2019 . The contest takes place at 
NorthWood High School, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each performance or event is allotted 
from 5 to 10 minutes. Students may do a solo, trio, quartet, or small ensemble. All our students will be working 
on this music in class and at home during December and January.  We will also have a concert on January 24, 
2019, showcasing our groups and to best prepare the students for their contest performance. 
 
Here are some things to consider: 
● There is a cost to compete in this contest. The cost to participate is as follows:  Solos are $15.00 and each 
member of an ensemble is $7.00 (trio, quartet, ensemble, etc.)   Entry money may be paid in cash or 
check. If writing a check make checks out to Dickinson Fine Arts Academy. 
● The band and orchestra teachers will help the students form appropriate groupings of instruments and 
have the final recommendation for going to contest.  
● You may do one solo and/or one ensemble. Percussion may be allowed to do a second solo only. If you 
do a solo, you must practice it at home and work with the directors at least one time before contest. 
● Parents must accompany their child to NorthWood High School, stay with the child for his/her event, 
and drive them home.  
● The judge assesses points; medals are awarded according to the points. Awards are a gold, silver, or 
bronze medal. 
● If a student is part of a group event, he/she MUST show up or the group forfeits any medals. They will 
only receive comments. 
● The band/orchestra will supply most of the music.
