A WOMAN’S HAND

1.1 The speaker suggest that a woman’s hand always hold something and it’s rare to find
woman with nothing in their hands by example she holds a future, a guide and she is a
builder in our community or in our lives. In line two, the speaker tells us other things that
a woman always hold with her hands such as a handbag - this means that every woman in
the world always hold a handbag and it’s true that is rare to find woman without
handbag, a child - woman is more responsible on raising a child. Symbol is an image that
represents something therefore a child is a symbol to a woman and in the world, a ring – a
woman is property to her husband and that she is married. Some of woman got marriage
because the other woman don’t have that thing of being perfect, calm and have respect.
An idea – they have success, open mind, they teach, guide with their own hands even in
their marriage they have control in their husbands to build a warm home.

“My hands are tired of holding” the speaker seems as she no longer want to hold something
with her hands and she exclude herself in things that done by other woman. “They simply
want to fold themselves” as if they‘ve been disappointed on what they have done and created
for.

1.2 “The nun’s empty hands” the speaker mean that hands are not holding something
physical but figuratively. The speaker emphasizes that she does not even want to hold
anything figuratively because her hands are tired of holding. The effect on this line is that
the God gave her something to use but she resist to use it because now she is watching an
empty hands. She is expressing her unhappiness towards societies expectation in doing
things that should be done by women. She is tired of trying to fit in the system that is
created by God.
1.3 The connotation and the denotation in the word clutched it means that the speaker
oppose on what God gave to women. This can also be an indication that she is not a
believer she fails herself in being a women hold something in hands. God gave women
trust because he knows that anything without women would be death.

1.4
1.1The tone of the poem is dreadful and tired. The speaker is expressing he unhappiness
towards societies expectation in doing things that should be done by woman. By saying
that she will not do what is expected in being a perfect woman. She is tired of trying to fit
in the system that is created for woman. She is in the mood of not feeling happy to being
a woman and does the things that done by woman.

1.5.1 “ I’d gladly let them go” this can be an indication of letting herself of being a woman
go, and watch a pair of hands ownerless through the world. She needs to be free and not
be classified in what she should do and should not do as women. She is her own person
without the responsibility of fitting in the norm of what people have created. “scattering
cooking pots and flowers and rings” to stray from the road that society created for her as
women, leaving the “cooking pots” being a provider for children and her husband “and
flowers” only being a pretty face without functions “ and rings” being forced to marry and
be a wife behind.
1.5.2. This is another thing that is required by society to fulfill women’s duties that she will
not oblige to. She opposed in what is required by societies norm and what they want her
to do and what they do not want her to do. She is feeling frustrated. She is bound to her
burden in being women and to fit in the societies norm in being a women and all the
duties that the women has to do to fit in.

ROAD TO MECCA

INTRODUCTION
Mecca is the religion of Islam’s holiest city. It is a high point to travel to mecca which is
located in Western Saudi Arabia. It is the symbol of spiritual goal. Symbol is a mark that
used as a conventional representation of an object means that is an image that represent
a quality. Miss Helen’s mecca symbolizes are artistic expression, freedom and spiritual
fulfillment.

Mecca as a symbol of artistic expression

Artistic expression to Miss Helen was more important than anything to her because when
you take a look to the play script, she chose to stay over at home during Sundays not
attend church and busy creating art. By choosing to stay at home not to go to church
means that she is not doing what is expected to well good behavior, a widow and a
member of her religious community. She also known as a visionary art because the way
she made her art in accordance with an inner vision of the final product. The camel yard,
the owl and the decoration she created a fantasy world of her own by creating sculptures
animals that don’t exist in real life. For Miss Helen loneness become caple in everything
she did and that is why she created her own environment. To create art in any of its
myriad form is to embark on a process of discovery, a journey that can be deeply personal
and spiritual.

Mecca as a symbol of freedom

Freedom from the oppression she experience growing up in a heavily religious village.
While the church minister visits with her in the second act, trying to get her sign the
papers admitting her to an assisted – living facility. Helen gives the church minister a very
long speech that reflects her past feeling of newfound freedom. One confession she made
to minister is that she realized that her faith which brought her to church every Sunday
was all terrible lie. She also realized that sitting next to her husband year after year saying
prayers and singing hymns was actually meaningless to her ( they had all become just
words) that lost their meaning over time, leaving her to feel completely empty inside and
a prisoner of that emptiness. She even dreaded facing her husband’s death because even
thogh she never loved him, his death would leave her face the emptiness of her own life.
The night if his funeral, she actually experienced a revelation when minister lit a candle
for her after taking her to home. The candle gave her the epiphany that her life can be
filled with the light of only she sheds all of the pretenses of believing in the Christian faith
she had grown up to believe in. In shedding all her pretenses, she found a true freedom.

Mecca as a symbol of spiritual fulfillment

Mecca and the concept of taking the road to mecca is representative of a spiritual journey
to Miss Helen. Miss Helen’s yard art and manipulation of light and dark with mirrors
within her house is her way of travelling to her mecca. She is not taking an actual journey
to a city in the Middle East. Mecca is a symbolic for her. It is the end goal of her spiritual
travels. What’s a bit odd about her spiritual journey though is that it is not focused on
attaining any sort of afterlife. Miss Helen’s mecca is a daily spiritual comfort. She is
spiritually comforted by her artistic expressions, and she believes that through them she
can keep some kind of spiritual evil away.

CONCLUSION
In Athol Fugards the Road to Mecca Helen does not physical travel to the geographical city of Mecca,
instead she takes a spiritual journey. Miss Helen’s Mecca is daily spiritual comfort, and other her mecca is
that she found the true freedom, as well as her mecca as artistic she creates her own town. Therefore Mecca
is a symbolic for her and her goal.
