ASCO 2oo3 Redundant Solenoid Valve System

Description
• A pilot valve system which combines the benefits of the 1oo2 & 2oo2 system
architecture

Features and Benefits

• Increase the safety reliability & operation availability
of the Emergency Shut Down Valves
– Fault tolerance dual redundancy (3 Channels Solenoid Valves
at HFT=1) – No Spurious Trips
– Online detection of faults (via Pressure Switches & Pressure
Indicators)
• Safe & Easy Online Maintenance
– Individual Isolated Valves that allow “hot swapping” of faulty
solenoid valve during normal operation
– Safety function (Emergency Stop) can still be performed during
online maintenance
• Safe & Proven Technology
– Solenoid Valves are certified to SIL 3 Capable (Exida & TUV)

Options
1. Individual Isolation Valves – To allow Emergency Shutdown during “Online
Maintenance” mode
2. Pressure Indicators – To allow solenoid valves’ status to be seen visually
3. Pressure Switches – To feedback solenoid valves’ status back to safety controller

1. Normal Operation
– All solenoid valves (V1, V2, V3 & V4) are
energised
– Process Valve (W2) is open
– Pressure Indicators (A, B, C & D) show
“Green” – No faults

2. Emergency Shutdown
– All solenoid valves (V1, V2, V3 & V4) are
de-energised
– Process Valve (W2) is closed (Safe State)
– Pressure Indicators (A, B, C & D) show
“Red” – No pressure

3. Solenoid Valve (V1) Faulty
– Solenoid Valve (V1) is de-energised due to
coil burnout
– Solenoid valves (V2, V3 & V4) remain
energised
– Process Valve (W2) remains open – No
spurious trip
– Pressure Indicator (A) shows “Red” –
Indicates V1 is faulty
– Pressure Indicators (B, C & D) remain
“Green” – Indicate V2, V3 & V4 are normal

4. Solenoid Valve (V3) Faulty
– Solenoid Valve (V3) is de-energised due to
coil burnout
– Solenoid valves (V1, V2 & V4) remain
energised
– Process Valve (W2) remains open – No
spurious trip
– Pressure Indicator (C) shows “Red” –
Indicates V3 is faulty
– Pressure Indicators (A, B & D) remain
“Green” – Indicate V1, V2 & V4 are normal

5. Online replacement of faulty
Solenoid Valve (V1)
– All Solenoid Valves except the faulty V1 are
energised & Pressure Indicator (A) indicates
V1 is faulty
– Process Valve (W2) remains open – No
spurious trip

Procedure
• Individual Isolation Valve (B1) is switched to
“Manual” mode – Cause V1 circuit to
depressurised
• Solenoid Valve (V1) is safe to be replaced
• Individual Isolation Valve (B1) is switched
back to “Auto” mode – Cause V1 circuit to be
pressurised
Exhaust
• Pressure Indicator (A) shows “Green” –
Indicates V1 is back to normal
