IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE LEVEL OF PULL-OUT REMEDIAL LEARNERS IN READING IN

PACUAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL USING AUDIO-VISUAL INSTRUCTION

I. INTRODUCTION
Reading is the first academic building block in teaching children how to
learn, and also exposes them to the vast world beyond their rooms. By reading
and soliciting a child’s response, a teacher is encouraging natural curiosity and
fostering a desire for learning. As a teacher engages the child in the subject
matter, the interaction between reader and a child assists with social skills.
Because reading is an integral part of any learning early exposure to it,
boosts a child’s overall capacity to learn. A love of reading opens the world to
children, be it in literature history, science, current events or even Math, it all
begins with written word. According to the National Center for Education,
children who are good reader, perform better in school and on standardized
tests. In line with this, the researcher decided to conduct this action research.
II. THE PROBLEM
This study aims to determine the level of performance of remedial
learners of Grade II in Reading in Pacuan Elementary School, Malasiqui II, District
Pangasinan I during the Pull-Out period, School Year 2013-2014
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions.
1. What is the level of performance of remedial learners in Reading before using
the Audio-Visual Instruction?
2. What is the level of performance of the remedial learners after using the audio-
visual instruction?
3. Is there a significance between the pre-test and post test results?
POSSIBLE CAUSES:

The researcher regards the following as the possible causes of the pupils’ low
performance in Reading.

1. Poor study habit

2. Poor comprehension of concepts and ideas in Reading.
3. Lack of textbooks and references in Reading
4. Lack of instructional devices in Reading
5. Inappropriate use of teaching approaches and strategies in Reading
III. GENERATION OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
This study aims to enhance and improve the performance level of
remedial learners of Grade II in Reading using Audio-Visual instruction in
teaching Reading during the School Year 2013-2014. This teaching approach
(AVI) will provide the Grade II remedial learners with meaningful experiences in
doing reading activities.
IV. THE PLAN OF ACTION
The main objective of Reading education in the country is to develop love
of reading by the pupils.
Therefore, Reading teaching should be given greater attention in
developing the reading ability of remedial learners.
Teachers in Reading are encouraged to make Reading subject more
interesting and practical.
The researcher believes that one way of enhancing and improving the
performance of remedial pupils in reading is to use the Audio-Visual Instructional
Materials.
The teacher will have more time to assist each learner.
