Certains d’entre vous les trouveront m&me peut-éire simplistes, mais celles-ci ne sont que des prétextes pour travailler et “faire tourner” ces grooves Pour travailler ces exemples et de maniére générale, nous vous conseillons de vous associer avec des musi- ceins de niveau égal ou a peine supérieur au votre pour pouvoir progresser. Mais, si vous vous en sente capable, n’hésitez pas & jouer avec des musiciens de niveau supérieur Cest lidéal pour avancer rapidement. Nous insisterons vivement sur un point essentiel: le plusimporiant n’est pas de jouer beaucoup de notes, ni de faire des rythmes compliqués, mais de faire “tour net” les rythmes les plus simples. En plus du travail sur le CD, nous vous recomman- Introduction This methoxt is destined to give bass players and drummers an idea of the rythms we are often confron- ted with professionally. We deliberately chose simple rythms and chords to practice on. Some of you may even find them a bit too simplistic, but they are just pretences to learning how to make these grooves flow smoothly. We suggest you work with musicians that have your level or that are slightly more advanced to be able to make progress. However, the best way to progress rapidly, is to play with highly advanced musicians (only if you feel ready), ‘What counts is to make these rythms groove and not necessarily play a lot of notes. Paradoxically, the most simple rythms are the toughest ones to play. ‘The drummer and the bass player ustally play from the beginning to the end of a song. In order to develop a certain degree of physical resistence and avoid getting cramps, we suggest you spend a lot of time practicing your instrument. There are two versions of each example given on the CD. The first one isa mix which serves as the reference. The second one is a playback version balanced as fol- ows : the drums and keyboard on the leit; the bass and Keyboard on the right. The playbacks are 1’ to 1" 15" long, and have a recor- ded click track which will help you to play. The time speed of the click track is sometimes at the quater note and sometimes at the eighth note. Every example comes with the necessary explana- tions concerning each instrument. There is a page for the bass with music and finger techniques explained, and a page for the drummer with the music explained and sometimes even developed. Before you start to play, there are several things to check : have you understood the meaning and inter- pretation of the example given? have you taken into account all the difficult technical aspects? “have you turted your instrument? You can also practice this method by working on the latin rythms with a percussionist. It can be quite inter- esting for the bass player and the drummer to see and hear different ways of interpreting them, Beside working with our CDs, we highly recommend you play with other musicians and why not even with your own band. Try to interpret these rythms your way. You can even choose a different tempo, (a slower one or a quicker one) whatever makes you comfortable. This aspect of your work is essential, and will lead to great progress.
