Criteria: Students will be working individually creating their WANTED posters of Blackbeard the Pirate. They have 7
requirements that need to be on their poster and they are expected to put them all on there. To pass the objective, they
must have 5 out of 7 facts correct.
Conditions: The students will work individually on their posters.

Last week I know that you guys kind of briefly went over Blackbeard. Can 5 minutes
anyone tell me something that you remember or know about Blackbeard? So
Blackbeard wasn’t a very good man was he? No, he wasn’t. Have any of you
ever seen a mugshot or a WANTED poster before? Here’s one.

So what we will be doing today is we will be making our own WANTED
posters of Blackbeard after I read you a story. Blackbeard has influenced the
coast of North Carolina because he would steal ships and take the treasure that
they would have on their boats and that would stop the treasure from getting
to where it should be.
I will read the story “Blackbeard the Pirate” by Kate Follet. https://www.raz- 10
kids.com/main/BookDetail/id/1297 After I read the story to the children, I will minutes
discuss with them that Blackbeard was a wanted man for all of the crimes that
we committed. The book that I have picked also has text features that we will
be talking about in reading and I will be going over those with them as well.
Things like table of contents, captions, glossary, and headings. As we are
reading, I will ask them to write down crimes that we come across in the story
as we are reading.
Together as a class, we will list off the crimes that he committed, the name of 10
his ship, some personality traits, and his real name. I will then start to explain minutes
to them what they will be doing. I will tell them that they will be making
WANTED posters for Blackbeard. On their posters I will tell them what is
required of them. They should have the pirate’s real name and nickname, his
ship’s name, 2-3 crimes that he’s committed, 3 personality traits or describing
words, 1-2 interesting facts, a reward amount, and a “mug shot.”
Students will be making WANTED posters of Blackbeard the Pirate. On their 20
posters they are required to have the pirate’s real name and nickname, the minutes

posters I will walk around the room and see the progress that they are making.
I will ask them questions such as “what was one interesting fact that you
know or you learned about Blackbeard?” “why did you find that interesting?”
I may also ask them why they offered the amount of money that they did if he
is found.
This assessment will be a formal assessment of their posters that they have created. They
should have all requirements on their poster to pass the lesson. They are required to have at
least 5 out of 7 facts correct to pass plus a picture that they drew.

Here are four student’s work. They worked very hard and really
enjoyed this activity. It is one that I plan on doing in the future if I teach 4th grade. Not all
of these students obtained mastery because they did not include all of the requirements on
their poster, but I did see that they tried their hardest and I got to see their creativity.

Reflection on lesson:
I enjoyed doing this lesson. I think it went very well for it to be my first social studies lesson. I wish I could have
completed it in my own classroom, but I still felt like it went very well. I felt like I could have been more knowledgeable
on the topic that I was teaching. I also wish I had more time to teach the lesson. I didn’t get to see all of the student’s
 finished work before I had to leave because there wasn’t much time for them to complete their posters. I did get more
than the 4 I posted, I got 13 out of 27.
