Silent subliminal function

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

"Binaural Tones with Surf 2" is available from the Download Nyquist Plug-ins page of the Audacity wiki. Operating System: Linux *buntu

Hello Jean-Francois and Steve - and anyone else who may have an answer...

I was formerly using Lowry's silent script with Adobe Audition to change the frequency up above human hearing, but have had
problems with it. I understand that there is a way to do the same thing within Audacity and see that Steve has replied to Jean-
Francois' inquiry about making silent subliminals by recommending a particular plug-in. When I reviewed the plug-in, however,
it only discussed the brainwave entrainment and not the silent subliminal function. Did I miss it somehow? I reviewed the rest
of the download page, but didn't see anything else that said silent subliminals.

So my question is: How may I find "whatever it is I need" to do this function of making the silent subliminals within Audacity,
including step-by-step how-to instruction so I am sure to "get it right." Anyone else's help would also be appreciated. Thanks so
much, Suzanne

To create "silent subliminal" speech that is above the frequency threshold of hearing, follow the following steps (this may not Operating System: Linux *buntu
work in Audacity 1.2., so ensure that you are using 1.3.13, which you can get from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/)

1. First you need a good quality (low background noise) voice recording that is to be "encoded".
2. Set the Project Sample Rate (lower left corner of the main Audacity window to 192000 (type the number into the box).
3. "Tracks menu > Resample" to up-sample the track to 192000 Hz.
4. "Effect menu > Nyquist Prompt" and copy the following code into the Nyquist Prompt box:

Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
CODE: SELECT ALL

(highpass8
(lowpass8
(mult
(lowpass8 (highpass8 s 300) 7000)
(hzosc 45000)
(hzosc 59500))
20000)
14000)
5. Set the Project Rate to 44100
6. "File menu > Export" to export the finished track as a WAV file.

Notes:
You will need either high quality speakers, or ultrasonic transducers to be able to play the resulting sound.
If you play back this recording over normal speakers, there is a risk that it could burn out the tweeters. It is essential
that you do not turn the volume up beyond normal listening levels. Even at normal listening levels there is a risk
that it could destroy the tweeters in the speakers as the high frequency content is far higher than in standard audio
recordings.
Many experts in the field of subliminal messaging claim that if your ears cannot hear it, then it will have no subliminal
effect, but that if your ears can hear it, then it will be extremely irritating to listen to.
It is essential that you do not listen to this recording at high volume level as it could cause permanent damage to
your hearing. This is especially important if you listen through headphones. KEEP THE PLAYBACK VOLUME LOW.
Many commercially available "silent subliminal" are totally safe to use because they really are silent (no sound at all).
The technique described here is not "silent" - there will be high frequency sound that may be above or close to the limit
of your hearing threshold, but it is not silent - hence the important warnings. Use at your own risk, but please heed the
warnings.
I make no claims regarding the safety or effectiveness of this technique. It is only intended as a demonstration of a
simple implementation of Lowry's silent subliminal presentation system (US Patent 5,159,703 October 27, 1992).

Wow, Steve, you really did an absolutely brilliant job of giving me an answer, THANK YOU MANY TIMES OVER!!

The one thing that strikes me, however, is that you've differentiated between commercial silent subliminals (which really are
silent) and this technique (which really isn't silent.) Do you know how the "commercial entities" make these "silent" silent
subliminals if they are not using this technique?
Are they using Lowry's patent? If so, I could hear easily hear my "silent' audios that I made using his script inside Audition.

And at what frequency does your code generate? My guess is 14500 (the difference between 45000 and 59500?)
My last script generated 15500, which was heard by a child. How high is "safe" above children's hearing?

Thank you so much for your time and this great answer and for bringing up the "volume" issue, which I've been addressing
already.

Suzanne

I downloaded some demo commercial samples and analysed them. They were silent (and I don't mean inaudible, I mean silent). Operating System: Linux *buntu
A bit of searching on the Internet and it appears found that there were other people complaining about the same thing.
To be fair, I should have said "some" commercial offerings rather than "most" as it really was only a very small sample of what is
available, (I'll amend my previous post), but the whole concept of "silent subliminal" is a ripe opportunity for unscrupulous
people to sell the Emperors new cloths.

Yes, the frequency is centred on 14500 with a sharp cut-off at 14 kHz (14000 Hz).
If you prefer 15500 tweak the figures so that you have:
CODE: SELECT ALL

(highpass8
(lowpass8
(mult
(lowpass8 (highpass8 s 300) 7000)
(hzosc 45000)
(hzosc 60500))

Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
20000)
15000)

Children often have very sensitive hearing and may be able to detect sounds right up to 20 kHz.

Hey, I'm new to Audacity but I was wondering if you make a silent subliminal, then should you put a audio noise or sound above
the subliminal (ie: theta waves, nature sounds)?

I have been asked about how to change the silent subliminal back into audible sound. Operating System: Linux *buntu
I can't speak for "silent subliminals" made by other methods, but assuming that the method that I described previously was
used:

To "encode" the message (making it inaudible) the code was:

CODE: SELECT ALL

(highpass8
(lowpass8
(mult
(lowpass8 (highpass8 s 300) 7000)
(hzosc 45000)
(hzosc 60500))
20000)
15000)

This code modulates frequency band-passed speech with a 14.5 kHz frequency that is produced by the interference of two very
high frequencies, 45 kHz and 60.5 kHz.

Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
This is basically Amplitude Modulation (similar to AM radio).

The signal can be decoded (demodulated) using a "product detector" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_detector

First, use the Amplify effect to bring the encoded message up to 0 dB

then apply this code using the Nyquist Prompt:

CODE: SELECT ALL

(lowpass8 (mult s (hzosc 14500)) 8000)

This is brilliant Steve, thanks. I wanted to make sure the tracks I where creating didn't loose the subliminal messages after I'd
'compressed' them to an MP3 format.

A slightly different question on the same subject is, how many simultaneous voices do you use when making your subliminal's?
And also at what speed do you have the voices playing at? Currently I'm using three different voices; one 100% out the left
channel, another 100% out the right channel, and finally the last one split 50% between both the right and left channel. I'm
curious as to whether this is to many already, or if I could possibly use even more. I'm also speeding the voices up slightly to a
point where I can consciously hear individual words but can no longer discern the sentences.
