INTRODUCTION TO EXPLORATION & PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES

Duration 40 days
Objectives
At the end of the training course, the participants will have a general knowledge about
hydrocarbon production activities, and specifically:

• Global knowledge of natural Oil & Gas origin, physical-and chemical

characteristics, their treatment and relative plants;
• Knowledge of the interdependent roles of pressure, temperature, flow rate,
levels and dew point;
• General knowledge of reservoir behaviour;
• Notions enabling to comprehend various types of well completion;
• General knowledge of Oil & Gas plant maintenance activities;
• Notions needed to survey plant functioning parameters;
• Knowledge of alarm and shut down systems, in the wells and in production
facilities;
• General knowledge of topics allowing to operate under individual, plant and
environmental safety and protection conditions

Module 1 – Main Hydrocarbon Characteristics and Properties

Estimated time: 1 day

Aim: The aim of this phase is to facilitate the access of trainees to the
operative context, providing them with knowledge of the basic
characteristics of hydrocarbons
Main topics:
▪ Hydrocarbons characteristics and characterization
▪ Main hydrocarbons properties
▪ Operating problems related to the hydrocarbon nature

Module 2 - Geology & Exploration

Estimated time: 9 days

Aim: To provide the technical and specific knowledge which allows

participants to master subjects pertinent to their specific area of
work.

▪ Basic geology disciplines: sedimentology, petrography,
stratigraphy, geochemistry
▪ Geophysical prospecting: seismic and non-seismic methods
▪ Geology data acquisition

Module 3 - Reservoir

Estimated time: 5 days

Aim: To provide participants with the technical and specific knowledge

related to the study of a reservoir

Module 4- Drilling, Well Completion and Work Over

Estimated time: 10 days

Aim: To give to the trainees the knowledge regarding the drilling activities

▪ Work over, wire line and well testing
▪ Well completion operations
▪ Production optimization
▪ Economics of drilling

Module 5 – Production Operations

Estimated time: 6 days

Aim: To provide the participants with the technical and specific
knowledge related to the phases of the production activity

▪ Production equipment and components: static and dynamic
equipment

▪ Measurement and control
▪ Water treatments
▪ Hydrocarbons process

Module 6 – Maintenance, Engineering and Project Management

Estimated time: 5 days

Aim: To provide the participants with the technical and specific

knowledge related to the maintenance operations and the
engineering procedures

▪ Maintenance activities and approaches
▪ Engineering and project management
▪ Pigging operations
▪ Corrosion and corrosion monitoring
▪ Commissioning, start up, hand over and decommissioning
▪ Cost and cost control in production and maintenance activities

Module 7 – Downstream Activities

Estimated time: 2 days

Aim: To give to the trainees an overview of the downstream activities

▪ Refineries, petrochemical plants, power generation plants, gas
distribution
▪ Impact of product specification on downstream operations
