Slope from a Graph

By: Alejandra Lugo

Subject/ Grade Level: Unit Topic: Slope
Algebra 1/ 9th
Date: September 18, 2018 Estimated time: 150 mins
TEKS objective:

8.4(A)
Use similar right triangles to develop an understanding that slope, m, given as the rate
comparing the change in y-values to the change in x-values, (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1), is the same for
any two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) on the same line

Lesson Goal(s):

Students will create a drawing of their choice that includes the four different types of slopes.

Learning Objective(s):

We will review what slope is and the four different types.

I will collaborate in a team to create the drawing and find the slope of all the lines.

Academic Language:

 Slope
o Positive
o Negative
o Zero
o Undefined
 Slope formula

Materials

Document Camera
Notebook
Large poster graph paper
Markers
Meter stick
White paper

Instructional Delivery - Activities

(students will be in groups of 3 or 4)
Day 1
Warm Up
Mr. Slope Says: like “Simon says” but they have to represent the different slopes with their
arms.
1. Practice with them one problem about finding slope from two points
2. Go over the project and group roles. Then ask for them to repeat instructions to make
sure they are paying attention and understand what is expected of them.
Group roles:
a. Manager
b. Leader
c. Scribe
d. Artist
3. Start working in their teams. (Assessment)
Day 2
Warm up
Students pick up poster and materials needed.
1. Once again remind them what has to be completed that day and what you will be
looking forward to during presentations
2. They continue working on the poster for a couple of minutes
3. Individual group presentations are taking place while the rest of the students work in
their groups on a handout.

Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment

Special needs learners

 Checking for understanding: Ask the students to repeat the directions and question them
throughout the lesson

English Language Learners

 Groups: those students who understand English the least are placed with someone who
can translate for them when needed
 Can present their part of the project in Spanish
Let’s Draw
Part 1
You and your group will choose a picture. You are allowed to use your electronics to find one.

Part 2
You will use only straight lines to create this drawing. There should be a minimum of 20 lines
with the following slopes:
 5 positive
 5 negative
 5 zero
 5 undefined

Part 3
Once you have your drawing completed, label each of the coordinate points. Make sure your
lines are on “pretty points”. You will use those points and slope formula to find the slope for
each line.
To check your answer, count Rise/Run on the graph.

Part 4
Personalize your masterpiece! Color and title your drawing. Make sure it looks neat and
organized.

Part 5
For the final presentation each team will go outside with the teacher. Every member will be
asked different questions about the project and how to find slope.

Rubric
Minimum of 20 lines 30%
Math work 50%
Organization and neatness 20%
Presentation 10%
