Bernstein High School Marching Band 3
Lindsey Showalter, Director

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the Bernstein High School Marching Band! I am very excited for the
opportunity to work with you this season! Our program has a history of excellence and now it is
your turn to contribute to keeping that tradition alive. Each year brings completely new
participants, but our procedures and policies help to maintain consistency.
This handbook will guide you through all of our policies, procedures, requirements, and
expectations for our program. Please take the time to read through each section thoroughly to
become better prepared for this season. Please contact me with any questions regarding the
handbook. It is crucial that each member of the band program fully understands what is expected
of them so that the program will operate smoothly.
When you have read and understand the information given in this book, please sign the
last page and return it to the band office. This is your contract to abide by all policies given in our
handbook.

I look forward to the upcoming season and hope that you do too!

Best,
Ms. Lindsey Showalter
Band Director

Attendance Policy

The band is dependent on ALL members. Unlike most other classes where individuals are
accountable only for their own success or failure, band students’ success is, in large part,
dependent on the full participation of all those who have made the commitment.

Work schedules and other activities must not interfere with the rehearsal and performance
schedules that you are given at the beginning of each school year. Students who enroll in other
activities such as athletics, choir, drama, etc. need to plan ahead to avoid conflicts that cannot be
resolved. SPONSORED activities, teams, organizations or jobs must not conflict in any way with
the practice/performance schedule of the band. All appointments should be made on
Wednesdays whenever possible.

Ask to receive a complete semester calendar from all your activities so that you can have the
maximum amount of time to work out potential schedule conflicts. The band directors will work
together with the other teachers, coaches and directors of various activities to give each student
the opportunity to be part of other groups. However, other groups, organizations or businesses
that may change schedules or make demands of students on short notice will not be allowed to
interfere with long- scheduled rehearsals or performances of the band.

The following attendance policies will affect the students’ grades and opportunity to continue to
participate:

• All absences from rehearsals must be made up regardless of the reason for the absence.
This will include a meeting with the director to discuss what you missed in rehearsal. You
will also play for the director your music that was worked on for the missed rehearsal.

• Make-ups must be arranged with a band director within a week from the missed
rehearsal.

• During marching season, the first unexcused absence from a rehearsal or performance
will result in the student and parent being notified that a second unexcused absence will
result in dismissal from the group. Excused absences are accepted only in the event of
illness, family emergency or extraordinary events (wedding, funeral or religious
ceremony).

• All absences will be reported through the online form on the band website.
10

Tardy Policy

All students are expected to be in the band room by the tardy bell and in their appropriate and
assigned seats two minutes following the tardy bell. Failure to comply will result in in school
disciplinary consequences. Excessive tardies from rehearsals (both marching and concert) can
result in movement to another band or removal from the program.

*It is the goal of the band director to provide all students with the opportunity to participate
in the program. If any of the above policies are unclear, please feel free to bring questions or
concerns to Ms. Showalter.

Assessment Policy

• Every student will be required to pass off all show, stand band, and pre-game music by the end
of the season.

• Students may pass off of the stand band music at their own pace throughout the season.

• Show music and pre-game music will be tested individually each week during the rehearsal
preceding home football games. Show music will be tested one segment/movement per week.

• Failure to pass off of show music by the second performance will result in the student sitting
out until able to pass. Failure to pass of off pre-game music by the second football game will
result in sitting out for that game.

BAND CAMP_________________________________________________________________

Band camp is a time for all members to learn about and re-familiarize themselves with
marching, music, and our program procedures. It is a learning time for everyone, whether
returning or new to the program. At band camp you will learn marching techniques, practice
reading drill, rehearse the season music, and overall, begin to connect with your fellow
bandmates in preparation for an encouraging and rewarding season together. Each year brings a
new group of students together and it is important to foster good relationship with bandmates
every year so that we can be the best band we can be. Band camp will also be a time to become
familiar with our program policies and procedures regarding daily rehearsals, performances,
football games, travel, and more. It is important that each member understands and accepts these
procedures in order to maintain and effective and efficient program. Below is a basic schedule
for each day of band camp. Schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen
circumstances. All marching will take place on the practice field and/or in the parking lot, and all
music rehearsals will take place in the band room. In the event of rain, marching will take place
in the gym.
