SARAWAK (National Annex : 2017 to MS EN 1998-1 : 2015) - Determination of Very Low Seismicity

• The map is Seismic Hazard Map published by Department of

Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia
• The value in the map are agR, reference peak ground
acceleration
• This interface is used to determine whether EN 1998 need be
observed for a specific location in Sarawak
• In accordance to MS EN 1998-1 Cl 3.2.1(5)P, EN 1998 need not
be observed when in cases of very low seismicity
• A location is considered as very low seismicity when ag < 0.04g
or ag·S <0.05g
• Instruction a) Input location in yellow box
b) Extract value from map and input in
yellow box
• Location PGA (%g) Location PGA (%g)

• Building importance class Recommended building categories (Refer to MS EN 1998-1 : 2015 : Table 4.3)
I Buildings of minor importance for public safety, e.g. agricultural buildings, etc.
II Ordinary buildings, not belonging in the other categories, e.g. individual dwellings or shops in low rise buildings
III Buildings whose seismic resistance is of importance in view of the consequences associated with a collapse,
e.g. schools, assembly halls, cultural institutions, condominiums, shopping centres, public buildings, etc.
IV Buildings whose integrity during earthquakes is of vital importance for civil protection, e.g. hospitals, fire stations,
power plants, emergency services, communicaiton facilities, etc.

• Ground type Description of stratigraphic profile (Refer to MS EN 1998-1 : 2015 : Table 3.1)
A (vs,30 > 800 m/s) Rock, or other rock-like geological formation, including at most 5m of weaker material at the surface
B (360 > vs,30 > 800 m/s) Deposits of very dense sand, gravel, or very stiff clay, at least several tens of metres in thickness, characterised by
(NSPT > 50) a gradual increase of mechanical properties with depth
(CU > 250 kPa)
C (180 > vs,30 > 360 m/s) Deep deposits of dense or medium-dense sand, gravel or stiff clay with thickness from several tens to many hundreds
(15 > NSPT > 50) of metres
(70 > CU > 250 kPa)
D (vs,30 < 180 m/s) Deposits of loose-to-medium cohesionless soil (with or without some soft cohesive layers), or of predominantly
(NSPT < 15) soft-to-firm cohesive soil
(CU < 70 kPa)
E A soil profile consisting of a surface alluvium layer with vs values of type C or D and thickness varying between about
5m and 20m, underlain by stiffer material with vs > 800m/s, (vs is shear wave velocity)

• Two important variants affect the results, namaly ground types and soil factors
a) Classification of ground types can be in accordance to the value of the average shear wave velocity, vs,30, if this is available. Otherwise the value of NSPT
should be used as per NA
b) Values of soil factors can be obtained from NA or by performing site specific anaylsis which is more exact approach comparing to values in NA
(Values of soil factors used here are extracted from NA's table for soil deposit equal or less than 30m in depth)

• Check MS EN 1998-1 : 2015 is applicable

Location = Bintulu agR (g) = 4 %g (refer to Seismic Hazard Map)

Check 1 : whether a g < 0.04g ? base on building categories

1) ag = 0.032 g for building importance, gI = I Buildings : minor importance not applicable
= 0.040 g for building importance, gI = II Buildings : ordinary applicable
= 0.048 g for building importance, gI = III Buildings : seismic resistance is importance applicable
= 0.060 g for buildinng importance, gI = IV Buildings : seismic resistance is vital importance applicable

or

Check 2 : whether a g ·S < 0.05g ? base on building categories and type of soils for equal or less than 30m in depth
2.1) for building importance, gI = I Buildings : minor importance
ag·S = 0.032 g for type A soil not applicable
= 0.038 g for type B soil not applicable
= 0.042 g for type C soil not applicable
= 0.043 g for type D soil not applicable
= 0.045 g for type E soil not applicable

2.2) for building importance, gI = II Buildings : ordinary

ag·S = 0.040 g for type A soil not applicable
= 0.048 g for type B soil not applicable
= 0.052 g for type C soil applicable
= 0.054 g for type D soil applicable
= 0.056 g for type E soil applicable

2.3) for building importance, gI = III Buildings : seismic resistance is importance

ag·S = 0.048 g for type A soil not applicable
= 0.058 g for type B soil applicable
= 0.062 g for type C soil applicable
= 0.065 g for type D soil applicable
= 0.067 g for type E soil applicable

2.4) for buildinng importance, gI = IV Buildings : seismic resistance is vital importance

ag·S = 0.060 g for type A soil applicable
= 0.072 g for type B soil applicable
= 0.078 g for type C soil applicable
= 0.081 g for type D soil applicable
= 0.084 g for type E soil applicable
