CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the study

Portable Water is Scarce. Clean water is of vital importance. For people, for

plants and for animals. To improve water quality, the government sets national and

international requirements and takes measures, for surface water, drinking water,

bathing water and ground water. Even waste water must meet certain standards

because, after treatment, this water is released back into the environment. Water is a

fundamental human need. Each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 liters of

clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean.

Polluted water isn’t just dirty—it’s deadly. Some 1.8 million people die every

year of diarrheal diseases like cholera. Tens of millions of others are seriously

sickened by a host of water-related ailments—many of which are easily preventable.

The Philippine government considers universal access to clean water a basic human

right, and an essential step towards improving living standards worldwide. Water-

poor communities are typically economically poor as well, their residents trapped in

an ongoing cycle of poverty. The society needs a system which can work whole year

whether it is day or night. Pedal Powered water filter is one of such solution. It is

green and pollution free method of purifying water using human labor.
Education suffers when sick children miss school. Economic opportunities are

routinely lost to the impacts of rampant illness and the time-consuming processes of

acquiring water where it is not readily available. Children and women bear the brunt

of these burdens.

Water is obviously essential for hydration and for food production—but

sanitation is an equally important, and complementary, use of water. A lack of proper

sanitation services not only breeds disease, it can rob people of their basic human

dignity. Water filters that use filtration methods such as adsorption, carbon, activated

carbon, kinetic degradation fluxion (KDF), and particulate filtration produce filtered

drinking water.

The background of this study is that the researchers came up with the idea of a

pedal powered water filter to sustain the needs of people in rural areas. Areas where

clean water is not available. As the demand of having a clean water increases the

researchers gathered all the information that can solve or lessen the water scarcity

problem. According to Fox News,” Worldwide demand for water is rising just as

access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains inadequate in much of the

developing world.”

The researchers propose a pedal based water purification system that uses

pedal power to purify water and make it available for drinking. The design and

fabrication of pedal powered water purifier includes sprocket chain system with

power generator dynamo along with supporting frame, copper piping interfaced with

filters, container with integrated heating element and supporting circuit to achieve this
system development. The system uses a pedal fixed sprocket with chain attached to

supply circular force to the dynamo to be driven. The power generated by dynamo is

then used to power the heating system which heats up the water in a container to

boiling point. The water before getting heated is passed through filters to remove

large particles and basic filtering. The filtered water is boiled to get steam which is

then passed through copper pipes in order to drive maximum steam through low

temperature copper pipes which provide water on the other end of the pipes. The

container on the other end is used to draw pure water from it using a tap. Thus we

achieve a pedal powered water purification system as a renewable water purifier.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to The Pedal Powered water filter for domestic purposes.

This seeks to ask the following questions:

1. Is there any significant difference between the “pedal powered water filter” and

the electric water purifier?

2. Is there any significant difference between the product of trial A, trial B, and trial

C based on time and pressure?

3. Is there any possibilities that the water produce by the system is safe and ready to

drink?

III. HYPOTHESIS
1. There is no significant difference between the "pedal powered water filter system" and

the electric water purifier.

2. There is no significant difference between the product of trial A, trial B, and trial C based

on time and pressure.

3. There is no possibilities that the water produced by the system is safe and ready to drink.

IV. SIGNIFICANCE

With this research about the effectivity of the pedal powered water filter system, many

people will surely benefit. The availability of this product is very relevant in the society

where clean water is low. "Health is wealth" as they say. People is more open to do anything

just to avail clean water. 80% from their fund likely to go on their food and water. The

necessity to have clean water is growing on the depth of poverty. This research will help

many citizens to make and provide their own water filter by the use of pedal.

4 beneficiaries of Pedal powered water filter system:

1. Local Households. In our society today, people is more likely to pin point clean water

when it comes to drinking. Tools that the can filter water is in demand right but with the

use of pedal powered water filter system, people can harness energy in providing their

need. Especially in rural are where safe water is very low. Local households will now

have a safe water for domestic purposes especially in washing and cleaning.
2. Workers in rural areas. Workers tend to consumed water every day. Workers in rural

areas travel with their bicycle. With this pedal powered water filter, they can produced

clean water while they are traveling. The benefit that they can get is that they can save

money in buying mineral water, with the use of this system they can filter their own

water.

3. Citizens in Urban areas. The benefit that the urban area will get is the development of

resources. People in the city is way more progressive than rural areas, instant water is a

must for them. A study from Japan shows that people who work in companies used pedal

powered water purifier. An instant water while traveling. If Japan has that why not in the

Philippines.

4. Government. The government tend to be the cornerstone of industry. The government

could distribute it and utilize the idea in order to resolve the certain problems. Also in

order to assist constituents in resolving the urgent problem of scarcity of potable water.

Way back in 2014 Taiwan raise more than 100 dollars with the use of this alternative.

V. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main focus of this study is how the pedal powered water filter system for domestic

purpose can really make dirty water a clean one. And it covers the aspect of how recycled

materials to be an effective source for us to make an efficient water filter. This study helps

the people to have a clean water from the rivers, rain and etc. Most especially the people

were in rural areas and urban areas that can't afford to buy a real water filter and wants to

save money. It is very helpful to the people that far from the cities because some of rural

areas here in Capiz that doesn’t have enough water to consumed. In the end, they use unsafe
water from dirty rivers as a used for domestic purposes. This system helps them to improve

or to get a clean and safe water. The study can be used in all areas here in Capiz and even in

school.

V. Literature Review

Literature view is carried out for what has been studied and what is being modified regarding the

project and what the earlier work has done on the project.

Health Development Eu et. Al (2012) said that pedal powered system can deliver great account

in making pure water for domestic purposes. The product can help the community to provide a

clean water for drinking and for household purposes. Study shows that 60% in rural areas in

Dubai used the system to save electricity. Health development shows that the product produced

such overwhelming results.

Betzabe Gonzalez et. al (2014) has studied on the design and he used old bicycle and just and old

system for pedal powered. This tubing was visually better suited for our project having no kinds

to

reduce flow, easy to clean and flexible enough to create suction between rollers. Sidecar is
added to the bicycle for the two tanks setup one of dirty water & other of clean water tank for

utilization around the home. Filtered water we get through this design.

Yuichi katsuara et. al (2011) president of Nippon basic company was the first company to

give Portable Water Purifying System “Cycloclean” powered by pedaling bicycle to make 5

liter(max.) of clean water in a minute at a technology fair in Tokyo. It need man power to

turn a bike chain driving motor to pump water through series of filter (without the use of

electricity). Clean water can be utilized for domestic purpose.

Ademola Samuel Akinwonmi et. al (2012)has prepared pedal power water purification for

domestic purposes and

design was focused on process of conception, invention, visualization, calculation etc. he also

made a force analysis to check performance criteria. The physical parameter of design was

determined by the appropriate calculation and the practical consideration with some

reasonable assumption. It is discovered that the design is simple, cheap, efficient and

affordable as could be seen from the readily available materials used. It also use the

Bernoulli’s principle for the flow calculation with the help of peristaltic pump.

A. Peramanan et. al (2014) has studied the fabrication of Human Power Reverse Osmosis
Water Purification Process. The device use pedal to harms human motion to convert it into

usable power to run a reverse osmosis filtration system. Osmosis is a natural process in which

a liquid from a less concentrated solution flows through a semi permeable membrane to more

concentrated solution. Reverse osmosis is an effective method of reducing the concentration

of total dissolved solid sand many impurities found in water. The project has been carried out

to make an impressing task in the field of water purification method
