Introduction

Ganapati Utsav is celebrated all across the

country and is one of the biggest festivals in the
state of Maharashtra. Though the Ganesh
Chathurthi festival had largely been a private one,
it was in 1864, when Lokmanya Tilak introduced a
new way of celebrating the Ganapati festival as
collective community worship. He called it
Sarvajanik Ganeshothsav or public Ganesh festival.
In 1893 Tilak praised the celebration of Sarvajanik
Ganeshotsav in his newspaper, Kesari, and the
following year he installed a Ganesha idol in the
Kesari office; his efforts transformed the annual
domestic festival into a large, well-organised public
event.

The Ganesh Chaturthi

Event

The Beginning of the Event

The Regency Garden Mandal holds a three day
festival every year. The idol is brought into the
mandal accompanied by a joyous dhol tasha
pathak and everyone is invited to join in for the
procession from the gate to the mandal.

Preparations for the Event

The preparations for the festival begin a month
before the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The
members for the organizing committee are
selected by voting and six heads were appointed
this year to keep track of various aspects. The
work is divided into categories such as
Performances, Idol and Pooja expenses,
Decorations, etc., and handed out to the
respective organizing heads. The head hence
plans out resources and funds and submits

his/her analysis. After the final review, funds and
resources are verified. The head is free to take
help from any member of the committee who is
not a head.
Two days before the festival, the decorating team
begin their tasks of lighting, decorations, stage
preparations, etc.

About the Event

Each day, the mandal performs an aarti twice-
once in the morning and once in the evening.
They hold a small function on the second day of
the event in which society members can perform
and show their talent in various activities such as
dance, vocals, and acts. The function lasts for
about two hours and is celebrated with great
zest. Anybody can participate and the committee
takes a fee of Rs. 80 from the participants. A
feast for the society members is also held.

Problems faced by the Mandal

1.There was a large crowd and the seating
arrangements for the function was not
sufficient. As a result, some people had to
stand for the entire duration of the function.
Handling such a large crowd is a little difficult.
2.The function was kept in an open environment.
Due to the erratic rains this year, the function
had to be suspended for some time.

Achievements
1.In the initial year, there were very few
participants and the committee member was
also very small. This year, they had over 30
participants and the committee consisted of 18
members.
2.They managed to handle all financial
operations without the aid of any third party.
Each transaction with the DJ, dhol Pathak,
caterers, decorators, etc., were handled
successfully.
3.Many people celebrated with great zeal due to
the awareness spread by the committee
members who used new techniques such as
social networking websites.

Recommendations:

1.To handle a large crowd during the

celebrations, methods such as proper seating
arrangements should be taken.
2.The event should be held in a closed
environment to avoid the circumstances of
erratic rain.

8. Do you do anything special that sets

you apart from other mandals?
Ans. Each year, we host a small show in which
people (who had to register in July) can
participate in dance, singing, plays, etc. The
show lasts about 2 hours and is shown in the
central open auditorium (this year it was in the
covered parking as it was raining). Anybody can
participate and we take a fee of Rs. 80 from
those who register.
9. What do you with the remaining
balance of donation/ participation fees?
Ans. The remaining balance is checked in to the
Regency Gardens Co-op Committee. They use
this balance for next years’ Ganpati celebration.
Last years’ balance of Rs.9211 was used for this
year for decorations. None of the money goes
into the pockets of the committee.
