Can-Can

I. Objectives
• Students will demonstrate correct playing posture and bow hold.
• Students will demonstrate correct pizzicato technique.
• Students will demonstrate correct bowing technique.
• Students will be able to play through part B of the Can-Can at 65 bpm.

II. Procedures
The students will:
• demonstrate correct playing posture for pizzicato and be corrected when needed (violins/violas
parallel to the floor at a 45 degree angle, nut of the cellos at forehead level, basses out in front,
slightly turned in, no pancake/goose hand, etc.). A student will model for the class.
• review fingering for D and C# by playing a 1 octave D scale.
• take some time on their own to review what was taught in the last lesson.
-Basses: Shifting in measure 7 (Basses will play for the teacher while the rest of class
fingers along).
• sing and finger along as the teacher plays measures 6-8. (both parts)
• play measures (pizz) 6-8 on a loop with the metronome.
• be given the opportunity to perform m. 6-8 for the class.
• give feedback to the volunteer performer.
• play the entire piece at 65 bp.
• share how they thought the full run went.
• demonstrate a correct bow hold using two hands and be corrected when needed. A student will
model for the class.
• play through the entire piece. Teacher will address any problems that may arise.
• play the piece by sections.
• give feedback to the section that played.
• play through the piece a final time together.

III. Assessment
• Teacher will assess students’ playing posture by checking each individual.
• Teacher will assess students’ fingerings and bowings by having sections play by themselves
and giving feedback.

IV. Standards Used


EI.1 The student will echo, read, and notate music, including
1. identifying, defining, and using basic standard notation for pitch, rhythm, meter, 

articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music; and 


2. singing selected lines from music being studied. 


EI.2 The student will echo, read, and perform simple rhythms and rhythmic patterns, including
whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes, and corresponding rests. 


EI.10 The student will demonstrate preparatory instrumental basics and playing procedures,
including

4. proper playing posture and instrument position;


5. string student- proper bow hold and left hand position.
