Assessment of Learning: Teacher-

marked
Lesson 15: Properties of vectors and scalar multiplication

Applications of derivatives and vectors

You are three-quarters of the way through this course. This is an Assessment of Learning, which is
used to evaluate your work based on established criteria and to assign a mark. Your teacher will
provide you with feedback and a mark. This Assessment of Learning is worth 17% of your final
mark for the course.

There are four Tasks in this Assessment of Learning.

Task 1: Knowledge and understanding questions

→ → ∣→∣
1. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of two vectors u and , where ∣ u ∣
v ,
= 3
∣ ∣

∣→∣
∣ v ∣ = 5 , and the angle between the vectors, when they are arranged tail to tail, is 55°. Round your
∣ ∣

answers to one decimal place. Provide a diagram. (6 marks: 2 marks for the diagram; 2 marks for
the magnitude; 2 marks for the direction)
2. Given the following diagram, use vector addition to sketch the resultants:
→ →
a. u − 2 v

→ →
b. 3 v − u

(4 marks: 2 marks each)

3. Calculate the coordinates of each of the following vectors algebraically. Then find the magnitude of
the resultant. Round your answers to one decimal place. (6 marks: 3 marks each)
→ →
a. p + q = 6(−2, 1) − 4(1, −3)

→ →
b. u + v = 3(11, 1, −2) − 5(2, 4, 6)
4. Simplify the following expressions, algebraically. (6 marks: 2 marks each)
→ → → →
a. 3 x − 4(2 x + y ) + 10 y

→ → → → →
b. 9(2 x − y + 3 x ) − 2(6 x − 3 y )

→ → → → → →
c. 2(4 x − y ) + 10(2 x − 3 y ) − 7( x − 3 y )

→ → ∣→∣ →
5. Find u in Cartesian form if u is a vector in the first quadrant, ∣ u ∣ , and the direction of
= 8 u is
∣ ∣

75° in standard position. Round each of the coordinates to one decimal place. (3 marks)

Task 2: Thinking questions

6. A homeowner wishes to enclose a rectangular garden with fencing. The garden will be adjacent to
his neighbour’s lot. There will be fencing on all four sides. His neighbour will be paying for half the
shared fence.
a. What should the dimensions of the garden be if the area is 432 m2 and the homeowner would like
to keep his share of the cost to a minimum? Include a diagram. (8 marks)
b. At $45/m, what is the homeowner’s cost? What is the neighbour’s cost? (4 marks)
7. The product of two positive numbers is 100. What numbers will produce the least possible sum?
Confirm that the sum is in fact a minimum. (8 marks)
8. ABC is a triangle where A is (1, 3), B is (–2, 1), and C is (–1, –4). Determine whether ABC is a
right-angle triangle. (5 marks)

Task 3: Communication questions
() My ILC
9. Discuss how displacement, velocity, and acceleration are related to a function and its derivatives.
Create an equation for the displacement of an object and determine the equations for the velocity
and acceleration of the object at any time t. (6 marks)
10. What is the difference between a scalar and a vector quantity? Include an example of each. (4
marks)
11. List and describe the three properties of vector arithmetic. Give an example of each property using
vectors in Cartesian form. (12 marks: 4 marks for each property)

Task 4: Application questions

12. A toy car slides down a ramp 3.6 m long. The function s(t) = 0.4t2 models this scenario, where
s(t) represents the displacement of the car from its starting point in metres, and t represents time in

seconds.
a. How long does it take the car to reach the bottom of the ramp? (2 marks)
b. What is the car’s velocity when it reaches the bottom of the ramp? (2 marks)
c. What is the car’s acceleration when it reaches the bottom of the ramp? (1 mark)
13. A transit company charters buses for scenic tours around Niagara Falls. There are 47 seats on the
bus and the price per seat is $30. For every increase of $4 in the price per seat, there is a decrease
of 2 people who sign up for the tour.
a. What price should the company charge per seat to maximize revenue? (5 marks)
b. How many seats must be occupied to maximize revenue? (2 marks)
c. What is the maximum revenue? (2 marks)
14. The velocity of a plane is 625 km/h northwest.
a. Draw a diagram of this vector, including the magnitude and direction. (2 marks)
b. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of this vector. Round your answers to the
nearest whole number. (4 marks)
c. Give the coordinates of the vector in Cartesian form. (2 marks)
d. Describe the direction of the vector in three other ways. (3 marks)

Feedback and marking

You will receive three kinds of feedback:

Your teacher will highlight the phrases on the rubric that best describe your assignment to show you
how you have done.
Your teacher will also provide you with detailed comments about the strengths of your assignment,
the areas of the assignment that need improvement, and the steps you should take before submitting
another assignment like this one.
The final piece of feedback that you will receive will be your mark. Each of the four categories of
knowledge and skills is weighted equally at 25 marks, making a total of 100 marks. The final mark
on this Assessment of Learning is determined by your teacher based on their professional
judgement of the requirements for the assignment.
