UNIT-I
1. a) State with proper reasoning, whether the following statements
are TRUE or FALSE 6
i) The relative humidity in a given location will be at maximum
at the maximum temperature condition
ii) The adiabatic lapse rate represents the rate of variation of
atmospheric pressure with altitude
iii) The density of the moist air changes at different height in the
atmosphere in a static column of water vapour
b) A precipitation gauging station (A) was established on June 1,
1965. The recorded precipitation for the year 1965 at this station
(A) and three surrounding stations (B, C, and D) were 55, 105, 85
and 125 mm respectively. Note the precipitation recorded at
station A was only during Jun-Dec 1965. The normal annual
precipitation for stations B, C and D are respectively 1,120,935
and 1,200 mm respectively. Assuming that the normal annual
precipitation for the station A is arithmetic average of normal
annual precipitation at other 3 stations (B, C and D), obtain a
reasonable estimate of the precipitation at station A during
January-May in 1965 6

2. a) State with proper reasoning, whether the following statements
are TRUE or FALSE 6
i) When the intensity of rainfall is high in a basin, the time to
peak runoff will be less
ii) Length of overland flow does not have any impact on the
magnitude of peak flow from a basin
iii) If the slope of the land surface is increased, the peak of the
hydrograph shifts to the right
b) The peak of a flood hydrograph due to 6-hour storm is 470 m3/s.
The total depth of rainfall is 8.0 cm. Assuming an average
infiltration loss of 0.25 cm/hour and a constant base flow of
15 m3/s, estimate the peak discharge of a 6-hour unit hydrograph
for this catchment 6
UNIT-II
3. a) State Darcy’s law and its limitations 6
b) A homogenous isotropic confined aquifer of constant thickness
of 20 m has 20% effective porosity. The permeability of the
aquifer is 15 cm/h. Two observation wells 1200 m apart indicate
piezometric heads of 5.4 m and 3.0 m respectively above msl.
Consider the average grain diameter of sand to be 1 mm and
kinematic viscosity to be 0.01 cm2/s. Assuming a uniform flow
in the aquifer, state
i) Whether Darcy’s law is applicable?
ii) What is the average velocity of flow in the pores? 6

4. a) Define the term ‘coefficient of permeability’ in the context of
ground water flow. Discuss the factors that affect the coefficient
of permeability 6
b) Derive an expression for steady radial flow in to a well in an
unconfined aquifer. Draw the definition sketch for this derivation 6
UNIT-III
5. a) What do you understand by mass curve and demand curve in the
context of reservoir planning? Explain with sketches the
importance of each of them 6
b) What are the factors that need to be considered while selecting a
site for a reservoir 6

6. a) Briefly explain the factors that cause reservoir sedimentation 6

Find the probable life of the reservoir with an initial reservoir


capacity of 30 M m3, if the annual flood inflow is 60 M m3, and
the average annual sediment inflow is 360,000 tonnes. Assume
a specific weight of sediment equl to 1200 kg/m3. The useful life
of the reservoir will terminate when 80% of the initial capacity is
filled with sediment 6
UNIT-IV
7. a) What do you understand by consumptive use of water? How is it
determined for irrigation planning purpose? 6
b) For an irrigation field, the soil moisture content (determined by
oven dry method) at field capacity is 27.1 percent, at the time of
irrigating it is 19.0 percent. The apparent specific gravity is 1.3
and the depth of soil to be wetted is 90 cm. How many ‘cm’ of
water must be applied? If the peak rate of moisture use by the
crops is 4 mm/day, what is the irrigation period? 6

8. a) What do you understand by ‘duty’ in irrigation engineering?
Discuss at least 4 factors that affect the duty 6
b) A stream of 135 litres per second was diverted from a canal and
100 litres per second were delivered to the field. An area of 1.6
hectares was irrigated in 8 hours. The effective root zone depth
was 1.8 m. The runoff losses in the field were 432 m3. Available
moisture holding capacity of the soil is 20 cm per meter depth of
soil. Determine water conveyance efficiency, water application
efficiency and storage efficiency, if the irrigation was started at a
moisture extraction level of 50% of total available water 6
