(Example of a paragraph about suspension taken from Rear Suspension – CHEVROLET
/ GMC Service Manual).

Suspension
Description and Operation
General Description

All of the C/K series vehicles use a leaf spring and a solid rear axle suspension system. The rear axle assembly is
attached to the multi – leaf springs by the U – bolts. The front ends of the springs are attached to the frame at the
front hangers through the rubber bushings. The rear ends of the springs are attached to the frame with the shackles
that allow the springs in order to change their length while the vehicle is in motion.

The ride control is provided by to identical direct double-acting shock absorbers angle-mounted between the frame
and the brackets attached to the axle tubes.

Five basic components of the power

transmission are:
i. Clutch – to connect and disconnect power
ii. Gearbox system – to select speed and direction
iii. Differential – to equalize power for turning
iv. Final drive – to reduce speed and increase torque to axle
v. Drive wheels – to propel the machine

“Torque” – The effort of twisting or turning

Exercise 2-18 Read this piece of information then check  the diagrams corresponding to this
definition.

Ratchet and Pawl

In mechanical engineering, a ratchet is a
device that allows linear or rotary motion in
only one direction, while preventing motion
in the opposite direction. Ratchets are used
in many other mechanisms, including clocks,
capstans, turnstiles, spanners, winders,
cable ties, jacks, screwdrivers, and hoists.
The term is also used for a socket wrench.

Exercise 2-26 Match the drawings with the corresponding text. There’s one extra text.

A. The spark plug supplies the spark that ignites the air/fuel
mixture so that combustion can occur. The spark must happen
at just the right moment for things to work properly.

1 B. The sump surrounds the crankshaft. It contains some

amount of oil, which collects in the bottom of the sump (the oil
pan).

C. The crankshaft turns the piston's up and down motion into

circular motion just like a crank on a jack-in-the-box does.

2 D. The intake and exhaust valves open at the proper time to let
in air and fuel and to let out exhaust. Note that both valves are
closed during compression and combustion so that the
combustion chamber is sealed.

3 E. The core of the engine is the cylinder, with the piston moving
up and down inside the cylinder. Most cars have more than one
cylinder (four, six and eight cylinders are common). In a multi-
cylinder engine, the cylinders usually are arranged in one of three
ways: V, in line or flat (also known as horizontally opposed or
4 boxer), as shown in the following figures.

F. Piston rings provide a sliding seal between the outer edge of

the piston and the inner edge of the cylinder.

Reading Comprehension.

Fundamente
su respuesta, con la información del texto.
