Express the force system in xy plane shown in Fig. 1 by (a) resultant force and moment
1 system at O, and (b) find the location of the point (in the x-axis) where the force system can
5
be replaced by single force resultant.

2 Find the forces in members AB, AE and BD of the truss shown in Fig. 2? 5

A skeletal diagram of a hand holding a load as shown in the Fig. 3a. If the load and the
forearm have weights of 20N and 12N, respectively, and their centres of gravity are Iocated
3 at G1 and G2, determine the force developed in the biceps CD and the horizontal and vertical 5
components of reaction at the elbow Joint B. The forearm supporting system can be
represented as the structural system shown in the Fig. 3b.

Determine the x and y coordinates of the centroid of the trapezoidal area shown in Fig. 4.

Consider the numerical values, a = 40 mm, b =60 mm and h =100mm.

Determine the moments of inertia of the Z section about its centroidal x0 and y0 axis shown
5 5
in Fig. 5.

Three flat plates are positioned on the 300 incline as shown and a force P parallel to the
incline is applied to the middle block as shown in Fig. 6. The upper block is prevented from
6 moving by a wire which attaches it to the fixed support. The coefficient of static friction for 5
each of the three pairs of mating surfaces is shown. Determine the maximum value of P
which may have before any slipping takes place.
