1. SAFETY

As this Monitor and Control Panel is designed to monitor and control high power RF units,
specific rules must be followed to insure human and environment as well as equipment
protection. Be aware at any moment that the controls and commands issued by the operator
through this Monitor and Control Panel have a direct impact upon high power systems that
should be operated with caution.

In addition to this section, included by reference are the following pertinent sections of the
International Standard IEC-215, ‘Safety requirements for radio transmitting equipment’:

Appendix D, ‘GUIDANCE ON ASSESSING THE COMPETENCE OF PERSONNEL FOR

DESIGNATION AS SKILLED’ and also Sub-clause 3.1 of the Standard.

Appendix E, ‘GUIDANCE ON SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO BE OBSERVED BY

PERSONNEL WORKING ON RADIO TRANSMITTING EQUIPMENT’, also Sub-clauses 3.2,
3.7 and 22.1 of the Standard.

To prevent the risk of personal injury or loss related to equipment malfunction Advantech
Wireless uses the following symbols for safety related information. For your own safety, please
read the information carefully BEFORE operating the equipment.

Symbols used in manual:

WARNING: This indicates a hazardous procedure that could result in serious injury or death if
not performed properly.

CAUTION: This indicates a hazardous and dangerous procedure that could result in light-
to-severe injury or loss related to equipment malfunction, if proper precautions
are not taken.

Page 5

----------------------------------------------- CAUTION ----------------------------------------------------

This equipment can not be repaired by the operator. DO NOT attempt to remove the
equipment cover or to disassemble internal components. Only qualified service technicians
should service this equipment. There is a risk of damage to precision components.

----------------------------------------------- WARNING ----------------------------------------------------

ALWAYS TERMINATE THE OUTPUT WAVEGUIDE OF A RF UNIT WITH AN RF

LOAD CAPABLE OF DISSIPATING FULL CW RF POWER. SIMILARLY
TERMINATE THE INPUT TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF THE RF UNIT BEING
DRIVEN BY STRAY LEAKAGE SIGNALS. Incorporate the termination prior to applying
prime power to the amplifier. This procedure prevents self-oscillation and irradiation of the local
environment. Even if a source is not connected to the RF unit you are working with, there are
situations where the RF unit can go into a self-induced mode and generate high levels of RF
energy. Destruction caused under excessive load voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) will void
the warranty. Although the amplifiers have internal protection for VSWR higher than 3:1 and
will automatically go in shutdown (with a delay of 1 second), still it is a safe procedure to avoid
unwanted effects.

----------------------------------------------- WARNING ----------------------------------------------------

DO NOT LOOK INTO THE OUTPUT PORT OF A POWERED RF UNIT. Treat the
powered RF unit with extreme care. Keep in mind that levels of microwave radiation that do not
induce immediate physical discomfort in most individuals can be sufficiently high to induce
longer term effects. Your eyes are particularly vulnerable parts of your body.

The permissible levels of exposure are quite low compared to the power levels of the RF units
built by Advantech Wireless (e.g. less than 10 mW versus 20 to 1000 W delivered by various
units). The permissible levels are currently being studied by a number of organizations. In the
past the U.S. safety Code established a dosage rate of 10 mW/cm2. Currently there is
consideration being given to reducing the permissible level to 1 mW/cm2 in the United States, as
has been the case for several European countries.

Page 8
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA

2.2.3 REAR PANEL

The Rear Panel of the unit holds all external communication connectors (excepting the RS-232
serial connector located on the Front Panel):

™ Interface Connectors:

¾ RELAY – Discrete Interface (DB-9 type, female)

¾ RS485 SLAVE - RS-485DCE (DB-9 type, female) connection to the PC (via

an RS485/232 adapter – see Figure 20 at page 13.

¾ PORT 1 - RS-485DTE (DB-9 type, male) connection to the compact SSPA

™ Two AC connector (85 – 264 VAC, 50 – 60 Hz) – any of these two AC line connectors may
be used to supply the unit.

Page 9
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA

The RELAY Discrete Interface provides the FAULT status of any of the units connected to Port
1 of the M&C Panel to an external discrete monitoring system of this panel. It provides also
ALARM signals for the power supplies of the M&C Panel itself.

If pin 2 of this interface is open relative to pin 3 (common) and pin 4 is closed to pin 3 the M&C
Panel shows that none of the units connected to Port 1 is in FAULT. If pin 2 is closed to pin 3
(common) and pin 4 is open relative to pin 3, this signals the FAULT state of one or more units
connected to Port 1.

If pin 6 of this interface is open relative to pin 7 (common) and pin 8 is closed to pin 7 the M&C
Panel shows that none of the power supplies is in ALARM. If pin 6 is closed to pin 7 (common)
and pin 8 is open relative to pin 7, this signals the ALARM state of one or both power supplies
of the M&C Panel.

4. MONITORING AND CONTROL VIA THE RS-232 INTERFACE

The RS-232 serial interface is a terminal mode interface which allows for the configuration of
the unit and for the download for upgrading software toward the M&C Panel. These features are
not available for the user, they are used only at manufacturer’s site.

4.1 RJ-11 TO 9-PIN ADAPTER CABLE

If it is desired to connect a hand-held terminal to the Monitor and Control connector on the rear
panel labelled RS-232, use an adapter cable. Adapter cables are readily available, but must be
individually wired. Follow the pin-out listed in TABLE 5. Figure 7 shows the pin-out for the
RJ-11 connector, looking toward the connector.

5. MONITORING AND CONTROL VIA THE RS-485 INTERFACE

The Advantech Wireless RS-485 interface provides the operator with serial communication
between a computer (or a network controller) and the SSPAs using the RS-485 4-wire standard.
It allows the operator to monitor and control important parameters of the system such as alarms,
internal temperature and attenuation. As opposed to the RS-232 interface, the RS-485 serial
interface follows a packet-like structure.

5.1 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

The RS-485 SLAVE of the Panel can be connected to a COM port of a computer using an RS-
232/RS-485 4-wire adapter. The RS-485 port uses a DB9 female connector with pin assignment
described in TABLE 3.

Note that an adaptor RS-485/RS-232 is required to connect the RS-485 SLAVE Port of the M&C
Panel to a RS-232 serial port of a PC.

5.2 PORT SETTINGS

For proper operation, use the following settings:

6. APPENDIX A: RS-485 PROTOCOL DESCRIPTION

6.1 INTRODUCTION

The General Control Panel (GCP) is general in that it can be made to communicate with different
systems of products through its assignable master port (Port 1). For the purpose of this
document the GCP is provisioned for a system of two SSPAs in a 1:2 configuration with each
SSPA being addressable by a unique MAC address.

The GCP will thus monitor the three slave SSPAs continuously, collecting and updating
information, as well as control these SSPAs as required, using the Advantech Wireless Protocol.
The GCP will then provide monitoring and controlling capabilities of the SSPA system as well
as of the GCP itself through its slave port using the GCP SC Protocol which is the subject of this
document. In other words, the protocol described in this document can be used to monitor and
control the GCP as well as any slave system connected to it such as the redundant 1:2 SSPA
system, in this case.

The protocol described in this document supports both a 2-wire and 4-wire RS-485 interface
using 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.

6.2 FRAME STRUCTURE

Since the RMCP SC Protocol is based on the SC Protocol it has a similar frame structure. The
frame structure of a packet sent from master to slave is as follows:

TABLE 10: COMMAND FRAME STRUCTURE

Bytes 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Address Command
Parameters or
Content 0x55 Port No. MAC Cmd Sub-cmd 0xAAAAAA
Check Sum
address

Each frame begins with a byte 0x55 that is not part of the checksum. The next byte is what
differentiates the GCP SC Protocol from the basic SC Protocol. Instead of a simple 8-bit
address, the address consists of the most significant nibble being the port number (0x1 through
0x5) and the least significant nibble being the MAC address 0x0 to 0xE. Hence, for example the
two SSPA units on port number 1 with MAC addresses 0x00 and 0x01 will be identified to the
GCP by addresses 0x10, 0x11, respectively. By default, the control panel itself is a special case
identified as being on virtual port number 0x0 with MAC address 0x1, hence identified by the
overall address 0x01.

Page 35
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA
The GCP will validate the given address (port number and MAC address combination) to see if
these are within the accepted ranges, if there is a system provisioned on the specified port and if
the MAC address matches one of the provisioned addresses for that system on that port. If not, it
will not parse the packet any further providing no response.

After addressing a packet so that it arrives at its required destination the next field is the
command that identifies what is the action to be taken, usually a command, with no expected
response, to set a parameter or perform an action or a command to request or query information
from the addressed unit. Again, if this command is not one of the expected commands for the
particular unit addressed the packet will not be parsed further and a response will not be provided
(in the case where one was required). There is a subset of commands of the GCP SC protocol
which pertain to GCP itself and another subset of commands which pertain to the SSPA slave
units. Only these two command subsets will be presented in this document as they pertain to this
specific GCP configuration. Furthermore, in some cases, with each command there is a sub-
command which further describes the command. In the case of no sub-command the default sub-
command is 0xAA. Hence the command is always made up of two bytes the main command and
a sub-command.

The next three bytes in the packet are to be used for parameters, and they of course are particular
to the command they follow. In the case of no parameters, the default parameter is again 0xAA.

Finally, the last, or 7th byte of the frame structure is the check sum, which is the algebraic sum of
bytes 1 through 6 inclusive. If this sum happens to exceed one byte, only the least significant
byte is kept and anything beyond that is ignored.

In the case that a packet sent to the GCP requires a response the format of the response will be as
follows:

TABLE 11: RESPONSE FRAME STRUCTURE

Bytes 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Check
Content 0x55
Sum

Again the response frame structure begins with the byte 0x55, which is not part of the checksum,
and ends with the check sum, which as before is the least significant byte of the algebraic sum of
bytes 1 through 6. Bytes 1 through 6 in this case carry the actual response. Depending on the
corresponding command request sent to the unit, these 6 response bytes may or may not all be
used. In general, any unused bytes are set to 0xAA. There are several typical response types
shared by all the commands and these will be outlined and referred to below, after introducing
the different command subsets.

Page 36
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA
It should be noted that any parameters sent as part of a command or that are received as part of a
response such as gain, power, temperature, current, or voltage, etc. are represented as a 2-byte
hexadecimal value, 10 times the actual value, in order to incorporate into this number one
decimal place of any fractional part from the actual value. For eg. a gain of 33.5 dB will be
considered as 335 and represented as 0x014F, a power of 45.0 dBm, will be considered as 450
and represented as 0x01C2, or a temperature of 56.2 C will be considered as 562 and represented
as 0x0232. In other words, gain, power, temperature, current and voltage are represented in 0.1
dB 0.1 dBm, 0.1 C, 0.1 A, and 0.1 V steps, respectively. Furthermore, in the case of negative
values as is possible with temperature the representative value besides being 10 times the actual
value to incorporate one decimal place it is also 2’s complemented to incorporate the negative
sign. For example a temperature of –15.6 C will be considered as –156 and represented as
0xFF64.

6.3 COMMANDS

The following is the subset of commands that can be sent to the RMCP and that pertain to the
RMCP itself.

6.4 RESPONSES

The following is a list of tables outlining the format of the various responses to commands
directed towards the RMCP, some pertaining to the RMCP itself, and others pertaining to the
SSPA units as referred to in TABLE 12 and TABLE 13 above.

TABLE 14 represents the response to a request for the serial number of a unit. These are any 5
sequential ASCII characters usually representing letters and numbers. Since serial numbers are
limited to only 5 characters the sixth is an ASCII space (or 0x20) as shown below.

TABLE 14: SERIAL NUMBER

TABLE 15 represents a typical 2-byte hexadecimal response that may correspond to a value of
gain, power, temperature, current, voltage, etc. multiplied by 10 to incorporate any fractional
value up to one decimal place and 2’s complement format in case of a negative value.

TABLE 17 represents the response to the request for the configuration of the RMCP by
outlining the overall addresses, port number and MAC address of all the units which are attached
to, and can be accessed by the RMCP. Each address is made up of a most significant nibble
being the port number and a least significant nibble being the unit MAC address. In the case of a
1:2 redundant system there are three units and as such three entries in the table below. The rest of
the fields are 0xAA by default.

7. APPENDIX B: TCP/IP INTERFACE

The Remote Monitor and Control Panel unit may be monitored and controlled using SNMP v.1.

The hardware connection to an internet outlet is achieved via a standard communication cable
with RJ-45 connector or Terminal Strip connected to the ETHERNET connector of unit.

CAUTION: The internal communication between the ETHERNET ADAPTER and the
Monitor & Control of the unit is performed via the RS-485 internal bus. Note that if the
monitoring and control of the unit is performed via SNMP, the RS-485 interface of the unit
may not be used and should be left unconnected. The monitoring and control of the unit are
performed via the RS-485 interface connected to the ETHERNET ADAPTER. As the unit is
connected to the ETHERNET ADAPTER, if a general RESET should be performed, this
must be done by disconnecting the unit from the AC power supply and reconnecting it back.

Page 44

7.1 SNMP INTERFACE

Advantech Wireless provides a MIB file with all necessary objects to monitor and control the
ARSC unit through SNMP. The MIB objects and their descriptions may be read from the MIB
file.

Using an SNMP browser (server) (e.g. SNMPc7 produced by iReasoning, found at

http://www.ireasoning.com, see

Figure 17 and Figure 18 below) and the provided MIB file, all the parameters of the unit may be
remotely controlled.

If the SNMPc7 browser is used, be aware that the Get and Set functions are not working according
to the RFC 1157 standard, and consequently the sequence Next <object.id> should be used instead
of Get <object.id>; the sequence Next <object.id> Set <object.id> should be used instead of Set
<object.id>.

7.2 TELNET INTERFACE

For a Telnet client that using a Windows operating system, the following command line may be
issued:

telnet <ipaddress> 9999 <ENTER>

where ipaddress is factory set to 192.168.7.210 and 9999 is the port number, see Figure 19 below.

Figure 19: Telnet Communication

Page 47
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA

In the Change Setup menu illustrated in Figure 19 the following options are available:

1. Option 0

Using this option the following parameters can be set:

Ip Address, Gateway Ip Address (if not used the value 0.0.0.0 must be set), the number of
bits for the subnet and Telnet password. The maximum length for the password is 16
characters.

2. Option 1

With this option the speed for the serial interface can be set and also the port number that is
used for the “transparent mode” (RS232 over TCP/IP). The value for this port is set to
10001 by the manufacturer.

3. Option 2

This option can be: Start Snmp agent or Start Ethernet RS232 adapter depending which one
is active in that moment. Start Snmp Agent means that the unit will go to Snmp Agent
mode after the command is applied (will start to answer to SNMP requests) and Start
Ethernet RS232 means that the unit will go to transparent mode.in this mode the unit will
stop answer to any kind of SNMP request and will work in RS232 over TCP/IP mode. This
mode is useful for firmware upgrading.

4. Option 3

Using this option the following parameters can be set: SNMP community name for read for
write (public can be used for both) and the Ip Addresses where the traps will be sent.

5. Option 5

Activate TFTP/Deactivate TFTP. In order to do a firmware remotely, the TFTP should be

activated. After that, for security reasons, TFTP must be deactivated.

6. Option 6

Activate/Deactivate the port 77FE.This port is used by the Device Installer application,
which is delivered by the company Lantronix and allows different settings over the
network. For security reasons this port should be deactivated.

Page 48
Monitor & Control Panel for single SSPA

7. Option 7

Using this option the default communication settings (for the serial interface of the Ethernet
Enabler) will be loaded. The default value for the port used in transparent mode (10001) is
loaded as well.

The last 2 options allow you to exit without saving the parameters (option 8) or to exit, save
and reset the unit (option 9).

For improved security, the customer should set a password for telnet (using option 0), then select
options 5 and 6 in order to deactivate the TFTP server and the port 77FE, which is only used by the
manufacturer.
