Assignment 3

Subject: Fluid Mechanics

1. Determine the velocity of flow at radii of 0.2m, 0.4m and 0.8 m, when the water is flowing
radially outward in a horizontal plane from a source (line) at a strength 1.9099 m 2 / s.

2. Two discs are placed in a horizontal plane, one over other. The water enters at the centre of
the lower disc and flows radially outward from a source of strength 9.99  102 m 2 / s. The
pressure, at a radius 50 mm, is 200kN / m 2 . Find :
i) Pressure in kN / m 2 at a radius of 500 mm and
ii) Stream function at angles of 30 and 60 if   0 at   0 .
3. A uniform flow with a velocity 3 m/s is flowing over a plane source of strength 30 / 2
m 2 / s. The uniform flow and source flow are in same plane. A point P is situated in the
flow field. The distance of the point P from the source is 0.5 m and it is at an angle of 30
to the uniform flow. Determine the resultant velocity of the flow at P and location of
stagnation point from the source.

4. A point P (0.5, 1) is situated in the flow field of a doublet of strength 5 / 2 m 2 / s .

Calculate the resultant velocity at this point.

5. Two sources, each of strength m are placed at the points (-a,0), (a,0) and a sink of strength
2m at the origin. Show that the streamlines are the curves ( x 2  y 2 ) 2  a 2 ( x 2  y 2   xy )
where  is a variable parameter. Show also that the fluid speed at any point is
(2ma 2 ) / ( r1r2 r3 ) , where r1 , r2 , r3 the distances of the points from the sources and the sink are.

6. Two sources, each of strength m are placed at the points (-a, 0), (a, 0) and a sink of strength
m at the origin. Find the stream function.

7. Sources of equal strength are placed at the points z  nia where n   , 2, 1, 0,1, 2, .
