USA Today Declares IUSA Readership Program a Success

Five years after IUSA and USA Today established a Collegiate Readership Program on
the IU Campus, USA Today declares the IU program a success. The Readership Program
partners with nearly 500 campuses across the country to provide both the USA Today and
New York Times to students at an extremely low price at convenient locations around
campus. Five days a week, IU students can pick up a copy of either paper at sixteen
different locations around campus including the dorms, library, and other major academic
buildings.

Neil Kelty, IUSA Chief of Staff, said, ““Every student pays a little over a dollar for the
equivalent of a year subscription to the USA Today and New York Times. It is probably
the best deal they'll ever get on a newspaper subscription.”

IUSA is student government that is “working for you”. For the past five years, IUSA has
partnered with USA Today to provide IU students with a program that offers great
benefits to the student body. Not only does the Readership Program offer easy
accessibility to the USA Today and NYT at a low cost to the IU campus, it also improves
individual success to the students who take advantage of the program.

Ratona Harr, USA Today, said, “The Collegiate Readership Program is designed to
promote civic engagement, global awareness, and media literacy on campus by exposing
students to the news in their living, learning, and community spaces.”

Harr also said that students who read the paper on a regular basis become more
marketable to future employers by becoming more informed and engaged in the global
world. The paper gives students the chance to examine diverse viewpoints and multiple
perspectives, which creates individuals who are active citizens on the local, national, and
global level.

Peter SerVaas, Student Body Vice President, said, “The Collegiate Readership Program
is an example of IUSA's focus on implementing the best programs available for students.
IU was one of four campuses that started the readership program, which is now
established across the country.”

USA Today recognizes the IUSA sponsored Collegiate Readership Program successful
for many reasons, including the circulation rate. On an average day, approximately 1,500
total papers are picked up around campus. Out of the four universities in Indiana enrolled
in the Readership Program, IU has the largest number of papers used per day. Other
Indiana schools involved in the program include IUPUI, Butler University, and the
University of Notre Dame.

USA Today also considers the program successful because it helps create a campus
where students are more engaged in the world.
