InTasc #6
InTasc standard number 6 focuses on methods of assessment. The handbook states that an

effective instructor using standard 6 in their classroom understands and uses multiple methods of

assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the

teacher’s and learner’s decision making. According to my own interpretation of this standard,

InTasc 6 is about differentiating means of assessment to keep learners interested in their own

growth while also providing the instructor with classroom data to be used to better the content

application in the classroom. An instructor who balances an appropriate amount of formative and

summative assignments, designs assessments that directly connect to learning objectives and

engages learners in multiple ways of demonstrating knowledge is an example of an effective

InTasc 6 user.

The teacher should be able to comprehend the types and purposes of the varying forms of

assessment. In the designing, adapting, or selecting of appropriate assessments, an instructor

should consider the students individually and how their scores will correlate with their specific

learning styles.

In an English classroom, it is typical that modes of assessment are boiled down to book

reports, reading quizzes and graphic organizers. However, there are a variety of assessment

options that may better suit students who do not excel in literature-based content. For example, a

class is studying The Outsiders and the instructor wants to measure the students’ understanding

of Ponyboy’s character traits. Instead of asking students to fill out a character chart, an instructor
could allow students to depict their understanding of his character in whatever way best suits

their abilities. For instance, artistically inclined students may choose to draw Ponyboy and create

a character map using their art. Students who are driven by data may create a table wherein each

block in a column would include a character trait and the corresponding block in the row would

include an example of this trait in the text. By giving students the freedom to express their

understanding, the instructor will be able to collect data that accurately showcases the

abilities/understanding in the classroom.

This standard is crucial to every classroom because means of assessment are far too often

limited to pre/post testing. As schools begin to shift toward a more progressive learning

approach, it is vital that instructors consider how the students learn best to most accurately

accommodate their strengths.
