Dear Lisa French and Piano Department Search Committee,

I am writing to apply for the Session 4 Piano Instructor position. I hold a doctorate in
piano performance with a secondary field in music composition/theory from Ball State
University. I believe my versatility, my passion for teaching, and my success as a teacher,
composer, and pianist as a soloist and collaborator makes me an ideal candidate for this position.

I am currently serving as an adjunct faculty member at both Anderson University

(Anderson, IN), and Ball State University (Muncie, IN). For the position at Anderson, I am
currently the instructor of Aural Theory at the freshman level, as well as the instructor for Form
and Analysis/Post-tonal Theory at the sophomore level. As the instructor in Aural Theory, I
create a year-long curriculum that trains students in the fundamentals of sight-singing and
dictation. This includes daily training in singing scales, exercises, and melodies, as well as
teaching students strategies for sight-singing on the spot, as well as completing melodic,
harmonic, and rhythmic dictations. As an instructor in Form and Analysis and Post-tonal Theory,
I create a semester-long curriculum that teaches students about Classical form, contrapuntal
Baroque forms, and music theory of the Twentieth century. Students have both an analytical
paper they must complete on a piece of music of their choosing, as well as a Classical-style
sonatina composition project that they work on throughout the semester. At Ball State
University, I am currently serving as an adjunct faculty in both the history and the theory
department. For this, I creating a curriculum for and teach Music Appreciation to non-music
majors, as well as teach both written and aural theory to freshman and sophomores in the music
program.

During my master’s and doctoral studies at Ball State University, I was awarded the
Graduate Fellowship Award as well as a full music theory assistantship. My responsibilities
included teaching all four levels of both written and aural theory. After completing my Master’s
degree, I was hired as an adjunct faculty member while still a graduate assistant to teach written
and aural theory during the summer sessions to undergraduate music majors, which I continue to
do every summer. In addition to teaching classes, I held regular study sessions the days before all
quizzes and tests, and tutored students as well. I also helped with the School of Music auditions
every semester by judging the sight-singing portions of the auditions, and by proctoring and
grading the written exams. While earning my doctorate, I did an internship in music history with
Dr. Heather Platt for her Survey of Music Literature class for music undergraduates.
Responsibilities included creating and teaching a four-week course on the Romantic Era, and
creating and grading a six-page analytic paper. When I was ABD during the last year of my
doctorate, I was hired by the music history department head as an adjunct faculty member to
teach Music Appreciation, which I am still teaching.
Throughout my undergraduate and graduate years, I was also an active pianist, both as a
soloist and collaborator, as well as an active composer. As a collaborator, I have accompanied
numerous church choirs over the years, and I have had many opportunities to accompany both
undergraduate and graduate students in their recitals, masterclasses, and proficiency
performances. I have also performed in numerous concerts that promote new music both as a
pianist and a conductor. As a composer, I have written a variety of works for varying
instrumentation, including solo piano, chamber music, and vocal music, all of which have been
performed at various festivals, concerts, or recitals. I have had the opportunity to work with
musicians on my own music and also with musicians on compositions written by colleagues and
composers from around the country.

During my sixteen years of piano teaching, I have instructed students of all levels and
ages, ranging from 5-61 years and worked with beginning students to advanced musicians. I have
helped prepare my students for auditions into college music programs and for competitions as
well. I have also had the opportunity to work with students with disabilities including multiple
students with autism. My current eighteen-student piano studio is comprised mainly of students
in grade school with a few high school students.

Aside from classroom and piano teaching, I am also an active tutor and editor for
graduate students, both foreign and native-born. I am often contacted by graduate students to
help them understand and write about scholarly articles for assignments, as well as help them
with their research projects. I recently edited a doctoral student’s dissertation in preparation for
his defense, and am currently editing a master’s student’s creative project paper.

Maintaining an active teaching schedule with both native and non-native students in
multiple disciplines within the music program has allowed me to explore a variety of teaching
approaches and strategies for explaining difficult topics in a succinct manner. I have developed a
variety of ways over the years to teach many different topics, as students tend to learn in
different ways. I am able to explain topics to students easily and can also come up with different
ways of explaining subjects in a relatable way.

I would be thrilled to accept this position at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. I believe I
can be an energetic and passionate addition to your faculty that will continue to develop your
program in a positive direction. I will be devoted to preparing the students attending with the
information and skills they need in order to get accepted into a four-year music program, and to
recruit new students into the program.
For the reasons listed above, I hope that you consider my application. I am confident that
with my continued hard work and commitment I will make a lasting positive impact on the
school’s music department and community. I am confident that my proven excellence in
classroom teaching and expertise as a collaborative and solo performer and composer will
benefit both the students and faculty. I will bring firm leadership, insight, and experience to your
music program and will strive to make your music program an attractive field of study for
aspiring music students.

Sincerely,
Richard Anatone
