This document contains summaries of two theses/dissertations:
1. The first discusses a 2017 thesis from Qatar University that evaluated using produced water for plant irrigation and its effects on plants and soil. It concluded pretreatment is required to dilute salinity, SAR, boron and heavy metals to safe levels for plants.
2. The second summarizes a 2013 University of Arkansas dissertation that found 6th grade students in Arkansas have lower environmental literacy than nationwide. Students lack critical thinking skills for complex environmental issues and the ability to solve problems. They also have a weak sense of responsibility and inclination to engage within their community.

Class – Microbiology Instructor – Adnan Ali Khalaf Alrubaye Part C: Theses/ Dissertation #1:
1. Author- Fathy Atia Mohamed Atia
2. Title- THE IMPACT OF USING PRODUCED WATER FOR PLANT IRRIGATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON PLANT AND SOIL CHARACTERISTICS 3. Year- 2017 4. Institution- Qatar University 5. Purpose- The theses evaluated the benefits and adverse effects of using produced water for plant irrigation on plants and soils to aide in water sustainability. 6. Conclusion- For using produced water in irrigation, its salinity, SAR, boron and heavy metals must be diluted to be in tolerated levels of selected plant species. Also the dilution factor up to ten times was not effective to use produced water in irrigation, so some pretreatment technologies for desalinization are required. Obtained results in this study need further investigation at their individual level to have a complete view even on plant tolerance, metabolism, and effect of different heavy metals on different plant species. 7. In my field of study one area of focus is on natural resource conservation. This study is an effort to assist with water supply and demand without causing negative impacts on the environment. 8. I would focus my study on a specific crop production for Arkansas farmers. My focus would be on rice production. Arkansas is the largest producer of rice in the United States. Rice requires more than two times the water to grow than other crops. I would determine what elements in produced water could be altered to not only hydrate the plant efficiently but also bring the largest yield of crop in relation to the soil to specifically the rice plant. Effective use and alteration of produced water would financially benefit the state and farmers and at the same time conserve our water supply.
Theses/ Dissertation #2:
1. Author- Dr. Lisa S. Wood
2. Year- 2013 3. Title – ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY OF SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS IN ARKANSAS: IMPLICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION REFORM 4. Institution- The University of Arkansas 5. Conclusion- We can infer from these findings that 6th grade students in Arkansas are falling behind the students nationwide in environmental literacy. Students are not being taught the critical thinking skills necessary for understanding complex environmental issues facing the world today. They do not demonstrate the ability to analyze and synthesize information to solve problems. Additionally, they do not have a strong sense of individual responsibility or the inclination to engage within the community in appropriate ways.
