Class room management

The teacher’s presence plays a large part in his or her management of the class room
environment. And it is not just appearance either. The way the teacher moves, how he
or she stands, how physically demonstrative he or she all these play their part in the
effective management of a class. All teachers like all people have their physical
characteristics and habit, and they will take these into the classroom with them. But
there are a number of things to consider by the teacher during teaching in the class
room.

Proximity, teachers should consider how close they want to be to the students they
are working with. Some student resent it if the distance between them and the teacher
is too small. On the other hand, distance is a sign of coldness. Teacher should be
conscious of their proximity, and in assessing their student’s reactions to what is
happening in the class room, they should care about it.

Movement, Teachers should move around the class room to some extent. This way
enabling them to retain their student’s interest if they are leading an activity or work
more closely with smaller group when they go to help a pair or group.

Contact, in order to manage the class successfully, the teachers have to be aware of
what students are doing, and where possible, how they are feeling. Furthermore,
teachers should watch and listen to what their students said and respond appropriately.

Voice, teachers need to be audible because students who are sitting at the back some
time can’t hear them just as well as those at the front. It is crucial for teachers to vary
the quality of their voice and the volume they speak at depending on the type of
lesson and the type of activity. Anyhow, voice is one of teacher’s equipment to make
their teaching activity on their student runs smoothly.

Seating arrangement, to run the lesson effectively, teachers should vary their
student’s seating arrangement based on the certain situation in the class. In contrast,
the poor seating arrangement not only causes students bore but also in effectiveness in
learning process.

Evaluation, good teachers need to asses how well their students are progressing. This
can be done through a variety of measures including home work assignments,
speaking activities where the teachers score the participation of each student, and
frequent small progress test.

To conclude, teachers have to consider many things before teaching regardless class
room management. Indeed the success of teachers in teaching their students is
substantially depend on their own competency in viewing the class room management
as an essential part of learning and teaching process.
