“Lightning”

The musical piece “Lightning” was composed by Greg Gilpin. He is an ASCP award
winning composer and a choral conductor. He started to play the piano at the age of 4. Some of
the instruments he played include the trumpet, French horn, and voice. He then became an
accompanist during his school life. Before his four years at a university, he was a director for a
church choir.

“Lightning” is very rhythmic and filled with dynamic contrasts. The piano accompanies
the piece and provides intensity. The volume increases and decreases in parts of the musical
piece. There is a part of the song where each section says “lightning” at different times which
creates a spooky effect.

I enjoy singing this musical piece because everyone has to pay attention to their part or
the dramatic effect will not work. The intense effect will leave the audience in shock. I always
get super excited to rehearse this song because it is very repetitive and when everyone sings their
part correctly, the effect will take place. Then there is a part of the song in which we say “boom”
and make a gasp sound right after which adds a dramatic effect to the sequence. I am looking
forward to singing this piece to the audience and see their reactions.
