The Golden Ratio and the Beauty of the Human Body

At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their
works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle,
in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this
proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. Mathematicians have studied the golden ratio
because of its unique and interesting properties.

Aim: How does the beauty(according to the golden ratio) of the human body change
with age?

You will explore the Golden ratio in the human body and face and comment on the
similarities/differences and changes that you see. You will explain why these
differences may occur.

Essential Questions:

• How do the Golden proportions of the human body and face change as the body
grows from infancy to adulthood?

• How and why do these ratios affect our perception of beauty at different ages?

Product:

You will produce a presentation either individually or with a

partner.
It can take the form of a:
 Video,
 Active board video,
 Power-point or Prezi presentation,
 Poster,
 Written report.

Task:

You will be given the opportunity to explore the Golden Proportions of an infant, a
child and an adult.

You may choose to explore the beauty of the face or the body proportions or a
combination of both.

Process:

Watch the video and refer to the websites on our BLOG, and decide upon the ratios
you would like to explore. You may choose 5 or 6 to explore.

Gather the data you need from your three subjects. A photograph may help the
process and allow you to analyze the data more easily.

Organize the data ready for analysis.

Analyze the data using suitable mathematical strategies to help you answer the
essential questions.
What conclusions can you make about the Golden Ratio in the Human Body and how
it changes as people age?

How do these ratios affect our perception of beauty at different ages?

Can you explain why these differences may occur?
