Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the methods and procedures of the present study

that includes the research design, respondents of the study, data gathering

instruments, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The researcher used the descriptive method of research to describe the

data and characteristics of the sample population. This procedure includes the

acquisition of factual, accurate and systematic data for averages, frequencies, and

similar statistical calculations to answer the problems in the study. This study

determined the use of learning styles of senior high school students in private

universities. The researcher used this method to gain more realistic and valid

information on the learning styles of senior high school students.

Descriptive survey method describes and interprets what is and reveals a

condition of relationship that exists or does not exist. This survey method also

looks at practices that prevail or do not prevail. The word survey indicates the

gathering of data from place to place and from group to group and explores

information on current conditions, communities, agencies, and institutions. It also

refers to the characteristics, status, or practices of individuals or group" (Calmorin

1995).

Subjects of the Study and Sampling Scheme

The subjects of this study were senior high school teachers and students in

private universities in Dagupan City for the S.Y. 2018 – 2019. The researcher

employed the random sampling as a technique to select the appropriate number

of respondents. The table below shows the distribution of respondents.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researcher utilized a questionnaire checklist instrument based on the

construed problems, writer's experiences and observations as a teacher, informal

interviews, and conversations.

Data Gathering Procedure

The Senior High School Principal of the respective schools gave permission

for the administering of the research instrument, which was personally distributed

and administered to Senior High School students and teachers. Likewise, the

researcher personally retrieved the same questionnaires. The researcher kept the

obtained response and data for strict confidentiality. The researcher informed the

respective senior high school teachers and students about the purpose of the

study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were used to answer the problems of the

study.

This study used frequency counts and percentages to determine the profile

of the Senior High School teachers namely: age, sex, civil status, length of service

teaching Senior High School, highest educational attainment, and relevant

training. This is also the same for the Senior High School students with their profile:

age, sex, and grade level.

Weighted average mean determined the extent of use of learning styles of

Senior High School students. The responses were categorized into a five-point

scale with corresponding numerical categories. The choices are classified as

“Always”, “Often”, “Sometimes”, “Seldom”, and “Never” with literal value: A, B, C,

D, and E, respectively. These are subject to transmuted rating as follows: Highly

Effective, Effective, Moderately Effective, Slightly Effective, and Not Effective.

The average weighted means (AWM) will interpret the corresponding

equivalent as follows:

To answer problem number 3, the study used the Analysis of Variance

(ANOVA) to determine the differences between the learning styles of senior high

school students as assessed by themselves and as perceived by the teachers

across their profile variables.

4

To answer problem number 4, the study used the Chi-Square Statistics to

determine the relationship between the different learning styles of senior high

school students as assessed by themselves and as perceived by the teachers

across their profile variables.
