Design Thinking Process: e3

e3
Discovery Phase-Checklist
Parts 1, 2, 3
Due: Oct. 30, 2017

Work with your design thinking team to take notes about each part of the Design Thinking
Process that you complete together. After you feel that you have fully explored each step of
the three parts listed, change the checkbox to a check mark. Return to and revise each part as
needed.

Define the mission for the design thinking process - Discovery Phase Part 1

❏ Identify/define the challenge - Restate your problem statement:

How can we help e3 Senior Students cope with stress and anxiety?

❏ Identify/define the audience (end users) -- Who will benefit from solving our problem
statement? These are the end users:

1. Students in E3
2. Teachers
3. Parents
4. counselor

❏ Share what you think you know about each end user (needs, challenges, background, etc.):

1. Students in E3 are stressed with homework, outside tasks,

Exams/Finals/Quizzes/Internships
2. Teachers stress out when students aren’t paying attention/Interrupting/ not having good
grades and last but not least having to grade past homework.
3. Parents get stressed when their children aren’t passing classes with good grades and are full
of anxiety by thinking about the future of their kids.

❏ Identify what you don’t know:

We don't know the number of teenagers affected by stress and anxiety at e3. We don't know how
we can help them and if they want help. The reasons they are stressed.

Prepare for Research – Discovery Part 2

❏ Make a plan for your research: How will we complete our research over the course of the
next two weeks?:
We will research the different ways stress and anxiousness can affect us physically, mentally, and
emotionally. We will each read different articles that will answer questions on stress. These include
the causes of stress, how people treat stress, how stress can affect you, and what stress is. We will
conduct a survey.

❏ Revisit: Identify the end users, experts and other sources of information:

Our end users are e3 scholars. We will call counselors and we will also call a therapist/doctor to get
more information on the causes of stress.

❏ Users (sometimes called the audience) - who can we contact and how?:

We can make google forms and send them out to all staff in e3 to take the survey to see if they are
stressed and how much at the time. On a scale of 1-10 in which 10 would be stressed out. We
could also go to classes and take the survey personally by the show of hands.
❏ Build questions to ask the end users (think of as MANY relevant questions to ask as
possible):

- Would you like to get help to reduce stress?

- Are you willing to do an extracurricular activity?
- How can we reduce stress and anxiety?
- Can we have a classroom for stressed people to come in and make exercise or meditation?
- How many times throughout the day do you feel stressed out?
- How much sleep do they get
- How stressed are they right now

❏ Build questions to ask the experts:

-what are the main causes of stress

-in what ways do you treat them
-how can we as teenagers help others with stress
-what percent of teenager commit suicide due to stress

❏ Make a plan for conducting the fieldwork:

- Making calls - Lupita

- Research the doctors- Joaquin
- Create surveys- Elise and Ashley
- Conduct survey to Senior class- all of us
❏ Set the schedule for your work on the discovery phase:

Part 1 finish by 10/15

Part 2 and research links done by 10/17
Summaries and contacts done by 10/24

❏ Determine who will do what by when:

Part 1: Everyone contributes - finish by 10/15

Part 2: Everyone contributes - finish by 10/17
Links for research - Everyone gets 5 - finish by 10/17
Summaries for articles - Everyone does summaries for their own articles - finish by 10/24
Contacts- Everyone contacts at least 2 people and takes notes on their findings - finish by 10/24

❏ What do you plan to report back?:

Plan to report back:

- Causes of stress
- How it is treated
- How people react do to stress
- Symptoms of stress
- Health related problems due to stress

❏ When do you plan to report back?:

10/17
❏ Did you dig deep enough?:

We found a lot of information about our topic. In addition we found that stress is related to anxiety.
We managed to get all of our questions answered by doing the research. We also are trying to get
different perspectives from professionals and other people our age to see multiple perspectives on
this topic.

Conduct the Research (Gathering Inspiration) – Discovery Phase Part 3

❏ Immerse yourself in context

❏ Learn from groups

❏ Learn from experts

❏ Learn from peers observing peers

❏ Learn from people’s self-documentation

❏ Seek inspiration in new places

❏ KEEP AN OPEN MIND!!

There are different types of treatments that can help with stress: Talking treatments, medication,
ecotherapy, and complementary and alternative therapies. You can get access to these treatments
through your GP. Talking treatments can help you learn to deal with stress and become more
aware of your own thoughts and feelings. It includes Cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness.
Medication can help reduce and manage some of the signs of stress, but since it is not a mental
health problem, there is no specific medication for stress. Sleeping pills, minor tranquillisers, and
antidepressants may help. Ecotherapy helps improve our wellbeing and self-esteem by spending
time with nature. Complementary therapies help manage feelings of stress through yoga and
meditation, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and massage.

Stress is not something that can be avoided, but it is manageable. It is important to identify
stress-related problems as soon as possible to prevent stress related illnesses from occurring.
There are changes in a stressed person. These changes or symptoms can include emotional,
physical or behavioral, or a combination of all three. Everyone has bad days, so just because a
person has these changes for a day may not mean they are a stressed person. When these
changes are continuous is when a person is stressed. Prolonged stress can contribute to heart
disease, hypertension, high blood pressure, affects the immune system, linked to strokes, diabetes,
etc. It can also contribute to memory loss, inability to concentrate, depression, anxiety, chest pain,
and rapid heartbeats.

Stress is the body’s reaction to harmful situations. During stress response, your heart rate
increases, you breath quicker, muscles tighten, and blood pressure rises. Everybody has different
things that cause them stress and some are better at handling it than others. The symptoms of
stress vary from person to person and may be the same as those caused by medical conditions.
