Essay – Intelligence and Cognition

Overview
Intelligence and cognition are subjective terms which are difficult to define. Research
into animal cognition has been increasing over the last 10 years in order to better
understand what animals perceive around them. Animal cognition and intelligence
also has an important role in human perceptions of animals, in that humans may be
more likely to think highly of animals who are perceived to be more intelligent.
Animal cognition and intelligence also have implications for the uses of animals, for
example in laboratories, and in creating minimum welfare standards. (Animals that
have a higher cognitive ability will suffer more from a welfare perspective). Animals
who have higher cognitive abilities are generally considered to have higher
requirements in terms of the complexity of their environments in captivity.
