Movie Summary

Ten years after losing his leg during the war, a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team
leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer has maintained a relatively safe family life. He
now assesses security and safety measures for the world’s tallest buildings and
skyscrapers that founded by a wealthy Chinese financier and entrepreneur, Mr Zhao Long
Ji.

While on his work in China, Will Sawyer and his family are invited to stay at the
Pearl, a luxurious 240-floor skyscraper for which he is tasked to assess the safety and
have been given a tablet computer that gives full administrative access to the
Pearl's computer systems that can only be unlocked by his facial recognition.

Back at the Pearl, and international terrorist that have many major crime
syndicates, Kores Botha that have keep a long revenge to Mr Zhao Jong Li and his
workers seize the building and set fire to the 96th floor, effectively trapping Will
Sawyer’s wife, Sarah and their twin children Georgia and Henry above the fire line.

Will Sawyer work to get inside the building so he can save them but is captured
by the terrorists and instructed to help them recover something hidden in the building that
they desire. In order to convince him to help them, they take his family as hostage.

Will Sawyer must clear his name because have been blamed of the burning
skyscraper and must figure out why all of this is happening next to rescue his loved ones.
While struggling to save his family in the fire of building, Will Sawyer also been chased
by Kores Botha as he is the only way Botha can get to Mr Zhou. Botha took Sawyer’s
daughter to make Sawyer take him to Zhou and when Sawyer finally succeed to meet
Zhou, finally he knows that actually Zhou and Botha have conflict and Botha is the one
behind all the messed. Botha has revenged towards Zhou as Zhou know all his partner
name and account number, and he partners want him to clear up all the mess.

That the reason why Botha want to find Zhou. Climax of the story occur when
Sawyer tried his best to save his family that trapped in the building while actually
everything happened is because his own employer.

2.1 What are the ethical issues/dilemmas in the case?

Ethical issue or dilemma is a problem or situation that requires a person or the

organization to choose the best alternatives that must be evaluated as right
(ethical) or wrong (unethical). According to the movie that we have chosen,
Skyscraper, there are several ethical issues or dilemmas from the side of
systematic, corporate and individual.

Systemic issues

It is explain about an ethical question about the social, political, legal, or

economic systems within which this company operates.

a) Social – In this movie, the founder of the Skyscraper which is a wealthy

Chinese financier and entrepreneur, Zhao Long Ji has funded the construction of
the world's tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong. This building stands at 3,500 feet (1,100 m)
and 225 stories tall, and being call "The Pearl". Although the building is structurally
complete, the construction process has been not without complications and the top
building has yet to be opened to the public. The nature and beautiful environment inside
this building get the people outsider too excited to come there.

b) Legal – In business transaction, there are law, policies and regulation that every
employee or employer must follow the rules. This movie shows many scenes that illegal
behaviour to the society. For example, Kores Botha is an international terrorist with ties
to many major crime syndicates and Mr Zhao show unethical behaviour to his employee.

c) Economic system – Hong Kong is the one of nation that has a stable economic
and because of this many businessmen want to make some investor to this country.

Corporate issues

It is discuss about an ethical questions about a particular corporation and its policies,
culture, climate, impact, or actions.

 a) Policies
 Every established company has to adhere to a government defined criterion to
ensure that there are undesirable problems occur further affecting the image of the
company and the country to outsiders.
b) Culture
 Kores Botha’s business are forced to engage in illegal activities because have
involve to the crime syndicate such as money-laundering, bribery, smuggling,
corruption, fraud and so on.

c) Climate
 This happen when Kores Botha known that Mr. Zhao steals all the software
information that contains of his syndicates and he keep that in a memory disk and
Kores Bothe want to take revenge to Mr. Zhao.
 The cimax happen when Kores Botha find out that Mr. Zhao know all the
information about his client and all the syndicate activities that he has be doing all
this time. Kores Bothe become desperate and need to get the hardisk no matter
what.

d) Impact
 Many things happen along the way of Kores Botha want to get back the memory
disk until he got control the whole system of the Skyscraper.

e) Actions
 Many action of each character in this story lead to unethical behavior.

Individual issues
It is an ethical question about a particular individual’s decisions, behavior, or
character in this movie. The main reason on how the building has been burned into a big
fire because of revenge of Kores Botha to Mr. Zhao Ling Ji.

 a) Zhao Ling Ji
He is a wealthy Chinese financier and entrepreneur and has funded the
construction of the world's tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong. This building stands at 3,500
feet (1,100 m) and 225 stories tall, and being call "The Pearl". Mr Zhao has a many
workers that work with him but some of his worker make corporation with a criminal to
take revenge on him.

b) Kores Botha
Kores Botha is an international terrorist with ties to many major crime syndicates
and in this movie, he want to take revenge on Mr. Zhao Ling Ji because have betray him
with steal all the software information about his illegal syndicate and keep with him.
What he has done to the Mr.Zhao is very unethical behavior. He threat Mr Zhao to
destroy his business if not make cooperation. He has many workers that work with Mr
Zhao and it is easy for him to take revenge to Mr. Zhao.

Were the actions of any of the characters in the case unethical?

Because of the revenge Kores Botha to Mr. Zhao Long Ji, many of the characters
in this movie doing unethical behaviors such as betray, dishonesty in friendship, kidnap,
steal, duress, kill, hack and make people injured.

a) Betray
In this movie, insurance executive Mr. Pierce, works with Mr. Zhao Long Ji has
make complot with Kores Botha to take revenge behalf on him. Beside, Ben Gillespie is a
Will Sawyer’s best friend also betrays his friend to steal and locate the tablet computer
system.

b) Dishonesty in friendship.

One of the scene in this movie, where Ben Gillespie also a fellow ex-FBI agent,
also Will Sawyer’s best friend have make cooperation and has been worked together with

Kores Botha (the criminal) and willing to kill Will Sawyer to get the tablet computer but
he dies when fighting with Will Sawyer.

c) Kidnap people.

Ray, a criminal that has kidnap own family to make hostage is really not unethical
behavior to society. Next, another criminal, Will Sawyer’s daughter, Georgia, has been
abducted by Botha who uses her to negotiate his own escape from Will Sawyer.

d) Steal

Stealing the information is an illegal in policies of business transaction. The scene

happened at Mr. Zhao has betrayed Kores Botha with moved the software information
that containing all the information of client, data transaction and bank account to a
memory disk without any permission Kores Botha.

e) Duress

Being force in business ethics is illegal things and lead to make the transaction be
invalid according to the law. In this movie, Mr. Zhao has been under duress of Kores
Botha where Kores Botha said he will mess up Mr. Zhao’s business because did not want
to make cooperation with him.

f) Kill

In law of Malaysia, killing people will get severe punishment on this action and
this action will give a bad image to society and nation. Kores Botha, who is a dangerous
criminal and an international terrorist with ties to many major crimes syndicates. He will
do anything to get back the memory disk from Mr. Zhao. His assistant Xia has killed a
hacker after the hacker settles his job in hack the building system.

g) Hacker

Hacker is a person who uses computers to gain unauthorized access to data

without permission. This hacker hacks the tablet computer and disables the facial
recognition and giving him to access the Pearl's security systems, locking out
administrative access the Pearl to Mr. Zhao and his team. He disable all the fire

extinguishing systems above the 95th floor, creating an impenetrable fire line that cuts off
all rescue operations from below to assist the survivors on the upper floors.

h) Make people injured

The scene happen when Kores Botha and his men start a fire on the 96th floor of
the building, triggering and activating the advanced computer controlled fire
extinguishing system installed throughout the skyscraper. Because of this, Will Sawyer’s
Sarah and his two twin children, Georgia and Henry has been trapped in the skyscraper
with the burning up fire.

2.2 Awareness of stakeholders: The content of this subsection can address questions
such as who are the stakeholders of the ethical issues mentioned in Q2.1? Why
did the movie characters do unethical things? Do they have better alternatives?
What constraints did the movie characters face or encounter?

Based on the movie that we are choose which is Skyscraper that main actor is Dwayne
Johnson as Will Sawyer. This content in this question is about who is the stakeholder that
appears in this movie is:-

1. Pablo Schreiber as Ben (Betray)

Ben is a Will best friend that worked together since they are in FBI team then they
have accident that involves Will in injured and lost his left legs and he cannot work
anymore as a FBI after that accident and also Ben already worked at Mr Zhao company
which is as security company at China. Ben brings Will to the Mr Zhao’s company and
he introduced Wil to the Mr Zhao and give the job to Will to take care all the system
security in that company which that skyscraper building.

But, Will doesn’t know that his friends which is Ben already betray him at scene
during time 14:17 minutes that he get some message from someone on his phone and
actually that person is Botha. He actually already gives the information about that tablet
already control by Will and Botha team and decided want that tablet that show in the
message

 Then, during time 18:31 minutes shows that Ben just act want to get a stealer that
trying to fight and the same time want to kill Will but it doesn’t work and just run away
from them and Ben just let it be the stealer go without call the police or report to the Mr
Zhao about that situation. Ben thought that tablet has been stolen, actually Will already
put that tablet on his pocket and Ben make a move by make a fight with Will because he
want to get that tablet and to give it to Botha in duration 23:45 minutes. At the end, Ben
has been shoot by itself during fight with Will. Then, he tell the truth about who want that
tablet and he died on that time.

Why Ben do that unethical things towards his best friend because of his life is not
better that Will Sawyer after the accident that they are face during to save people in FBI.
He jealous with Will family that are very happy and always have priority with the people
around Will. He also jealous that Will always get better job than him and Ben always
didn’t get any kind of main work like Will that he already be leader by control all the
system security in that skyscraper building. Then, the better alternative that ben should do
Ben shouldn’t complot with Botha to betray his own employer, Mr Zhao. Then, he
shouldn’t lie his own friend, Will Sawyer for his own self-interest. In that tablet has very
important information about security and only Will can unlocked that tablet by scan by
his face. Ben wants a good job that’s why he betray Will and give information to the
Botha about tablet are belonging with Will but finally he died.

2. Kones Botha (Intruder) and Mr Pierce

Botha is business partner that doing business with Mr Zhao but both have bad
relationship after Mr Zhao doing bad things towards Botha. Unethical things that Botha
doing is he was lying towards Sawyer’s family during in that building and they told that
family they are security team in that building by bring the many box that contain burning
ingredients during time 22:10 minutes. Then, Botha team get into skyscraper without
permission and start want to burn that building. His team killed all the security team
member that care in each level to get in to the building because he want to take a control
all the system security of the building.

He trying to hijack all the skyscraper system that produced by Mr Zhao because
he want to revenge towards Mr Zhao doing before this and want to steal ‘The Pearl’

which is pen drive that contain all the Botha and Zhao’s work before this but that pen
drive Mr Zhao are keep to not steal by Botha. Another scene is Botha was trying
blackmail Will Sawyer about his family because of that building and take Will daughter
to the skyscraper roof in duration 1:03:02 minutes.

Mr Pierce is the personal security that cooperate with the Botha team to betray Mr
Zhao because of he also wants to take a control of the system security of the building. He
also kill all the Zhao team members during 48:50 minutes because he want to run from
that building but he failed so he gave all the information about Sawyer to the Botha.

The better alternatives that they can doing by not have this bad situation is Botha
should negotiate with Zhao about the pen drive that keep by Zhao in good condition by
have a meeting together and have a good conversation in both to make the situation more
peace. Second, Mr Pierce should be a loyal employee towards his boss which is Mr Zhao
and not to betray by give confidential information to other people about that building
security system.

3. Mr Zhao (Selfish)

The unethical things he do in this movie is he doesn’t care about the fire in his
building at level 96 that happened towards Sawyer’s family in that level during duration
33:12 minutes. Then, he just want to save his life and “The Pearl” which is pen drive
from Botha because of data in that pen drive are important to keep safe. Mr Zhao selfish
because he just want to save his life only from Botha and make a move by want to shoot
Will in duration 1:15:21 minutes because of the pen drive.

In that pen drive have a lot important information about Botha work with the
others partner in another places. Mr Zhou know about all the Botha action with the other
partners by the online payment so Mr Zhou decided keeps that pen drive to make some
blackmail toward Botha. Mr Zhou know everything about Botha action because in that
pen drive has a transmitter that can know all the Botha partners. Then, they wanted Botha
find Zhou no matter how and killing Zhou because of that pen drive are important to
them. When Mr Zhou know all that action, Mr Zhou run from Botha and keeps that pen
drive because he didn’t want to pay the safety money towards Botha.

 The better alternatives that Mr Zhao can do is he should tell the truth about the
situation to the Will why Botha chase him and make chaos into skyscraper. Then, do not
make hidden information towards other people that already trust you because it is already
involves the Sawyer’s family life on the same time.

4. Will Sawyer (make unappropriated decision)

The unethical this that Will do is he steal the police motorcycle without
permission because that things are government rights that not easily to get it during the
Botha gang want to get him after Ben died in Ben’s house in duration 29:45 minutes.
Then, he run away from the police before the police wants to grab him during 37:00
minutes in that movie and straight away go to skyscraper to save his family.

Will climb the outside skyscraper building that can be harm his lives and
dangerous situation towards him that are scene starting in duration 41:00 minutes to save
is family. That situation is not safe if in because it can make you died in the real situation.
Next,Will climb into outside skyscraper to off the main system to get in into the
penthouse that Mr Zhao lives by dangerous his life because he wanted to save his
daughter before Botha kill his daughter in duration 1:12:03 minutes.

Better alternatives that Will can do is he should have a good negotiate with Botha
about the security system that made by Mr Zhao and also how to influence and make a
good communication with Botha that he cannot harm his daughter and blackmail him by
said to killing his daughter. Then, trying to be rational to make some solution to save his
daughter and be more good intermediaries’ people between Botha and Mr Zhao about
that building system security and their business problem that involves both of them
before this to make both make a rational decision.

5. Inspector Wu & Sergeant Han

The unethical thing that both are doing is they are just monitoring Will Sawyer
action from computer and CCTV that provided and not take any action while Will doing
that unethical things during climb to get in into that building. They take action after his
wife get some plan to save Will and her daughter to get out from that building by plan the

strategic place by the mind map that Sergeant Han showed at the computer how to catch
the Botha team and save Will and her daughter.

Better alternatives that they can do is they should take action from the beginning
Will start to climb the skyscraper but not in the end make a move after Will wife get out
from the building.

The constraints did the movie characters face or encounter is the dangerous
situation that they have to going through because all the people in this movie are more
doing unethical things by killing each other on the same time they are not make any
rational decision in certain situation and make it more complex towards each other. Then,
they are shows not the people we can trust easily even though that people are already help
you by giving the good job towards you and in the end you already found his crime
because Mr Zhao are telling the truth why Botha want to get him ad mad at him.

In certain situation that they are facing is all people in this movie they are trying
to handle the hard situation which is Will are handle the family matter mad at the same
time want to help Mr Zhao even Mr Zhao was trying to kill him and want to save his life
by itself. Next, the constraints that they are face is if the bad people are control the
security system in that building if Botha get that tablet and ‘The Pearl’ it will become
worst if Botha takeover.

2.3 Ethical reasoning: the content of this subsection can address questions such as
what are the different views of the various stakeholders on the ethical issues
in the movie? Which stakeholder has the strongest ethical arguments?

From the movie of Skyscraper, we can see different view from various stakeholder on the
ethical issue in the movie. We can figure out the different view from the various
stakeholder on the incident that happen in this movie that bring up the ethical issue.

The Pearl (the building)

We start with the view from the people around towards The Pearl building that
owned by Mr. Zhou. It is the tallest and the most advanced building in the world that

located at Hong Kong, China. The Pearl is about 3,500 feet tall and it is actually
whopping 783 feet over Burj Khalifa in Dubai which is 2,717-foot-tall, the actual tallest
building in the world. the Pearl Tower is beyond advanced compared to other real
building in the world like Burj Khalifa. This building is built as symbols of beyond
advanced of the systems. The view that we can relate from the people around is the image
of the building itself. The building bring the image if lux and the Pearl building itself
described as "a marvel of technology and architectural design".

The people arounds might think that the building is everything. It is complete, the
design, the function, the facilities that provided in the building and the most advanced is
the systems that operating like the security systems. It is full of high technology that
makes people impressed with the creation. It can be such an inspiration to other people to
work with it, to be part of it. There also another view for this skyscraper which is, it can
be a threat for the people with small business because the investor might be more
interested with The Pearl as they feel that the building will give more profit and benefit to
them. It would be great competitions to the small business around to step forward and get
more investor to their company.

Mr. Zhou

In the movie, Mr. Zhou is the owner of the building and also the important
character in the movie which is actually create the ethical issue in this movie. All people
arounds him look at him as a great manager that own the great skyscraper in China, The
Pearl. Besides, also the one who hold the whole systems that operated in the building.
There is employee that really loyal to him and works for him till die like his one of the
staffs, Ajani Okeke that really protect him and willing to sacrifice for the sake of his
manager, Mr. Zhou. Here we can see that Ajani Okeke practice the individual ethical
issues which is about particular individual’s decisions, behavior or character. He tries his
best to save Mr. Zhou and the building till he willing to be kill as long as he can protect
Mr. Zhou from being killed by Kores Botha. While the rest of the employee choose to
betray Mr. Zhou because they silently work for Kores Botha to destroy Mr. Zhou.

Besides, another employee that really protects and practice good ethics in working
is Will Sawyer. Will Sawyer really takes his job seriously and full of responsible because

he really committed with his works and work faithfully with Mr. Zhou. At the end of the
story even he knows that Mr. Zhou have something that Kores Botha want, that finally
affect his family that got trapped in the building that on fire, he still protects Mr. Zhou
and fight against Kores Botha. Will Sawyer still protect the tablet that given by Mr. Zhou
that have the systems of the building (The Pearl) no matter what happen. He protects and
take a good care of the tab because it is the only way he can access into the systems of the
building and is a responsibility from Mr. Zhou that he has to take care of. He still makes
sure that Mr. Zhou is safe from Kores Botha that threat his employer and destroy the
building which was cause his family got into trouble in the building. These both
employee, Ajani Okeke and Will Sawyer practice the third view that ethical qualities be
attributed to corporations which state that humans carry out the corporation’s actions so
they are morally responsible for what they do and ethical qualities apply in a primary
sense to them, corporations have ethical qualities only in a derivative sense.

While other stakeholder that involve in this movie like police and public look at
Mr. Zhou as the richest people because he own the building. When the building is on fire,
people even the police still thinks that Mr. Zhou has nothing to do with the fire and he is
one of the victim of the fire in the building in fact they thought that Will Sawyer is the
one who cause the fire and sabotage the building while actually he was saving his family
that trapped in the fire without know anything about Kores Botha and his crew that
messed up the incident.

While actually, Mr. Zhou has conflict with Kores Botha that made Botha did the
fire because it is the only way Botha can get into the building. Botha actually has planned
to mess up with Mr. Zhou if Zhou do not want to corporate with him in doing business.
To save himself from Botha, Zhou save the important data in the drive that he keep and
the drive has all the transaction that he did into his account and also the key of the
systems of the building. Actually, Mr. Zhou the one who cause Kores Botha to threat him
and destroy the building because Botha once said that he will mess up with Zhou
previously but Zhou still did all the transaction and build the building (The Pearl). So,
here we can see that Mr. Zhou is the one who has ethical issue here because, the fire will
not happen if he did not being selfish and his problem and Botha solved earlier. For sure,

Sawyer’s family will not get into trapped in the fire of the building that threat their life
and cause danger. Here we can see that different view for these two characters, Mr. Zhou
and Will Sawyer. Mr. Zhou who actually start the messed up but Will Sawyer got the bad
name and affect his family even the police trying to get him.

Will Sawyer

Will Sawyer is the employee with full of responsibility and also a man that really
care about his family. Will Sawyer is very committed person with his works and take the
responsibility with full of honour. He was a war veteran before he got into explosion and
lose one of his leg. Then, he works for Mr. Zhou in setting the security systems of the
building (The Pearl). He just about to work with Mr. Zhou then suddenly, his family got
trapped in the building because fire happen caused by Kores Botha without his knowing.
He does not know anything about Kores Botha and his conflict with Mr. Zhou and have
no idea about the drive that Botha looking for. He been betrayed by his own bestfriend,
Ben that in silent works with Botha to get the systems of the building because he jealous
that Sawyer get a better life and happy with his family.

Will Sawyer trying his very best and sacrifice to save his family from the fire that
happen which finally accused him the one who caused the fire. Police try to get him
because they thought that Will Sawyer have complot with the Botha and team to fire the
building. In the same time, public people around hope that Sawyer will get out from the
building safely since he decided to get into the building to save his family. They thought
that Sawyer is a hero that willingly to do anything to make sure that his family is safe. As
an employer, Mr. Zhou trust Sawyer and gave him a tablet that only can be access by
Sawyer and lead the systems of the building. Mr. Zhou knows that Sawyer can be trust
and will not betray him.

While actually, Sawyer and his family become victim of the conflict that happens
between Mr. Zhou and Kores Botha. He does not know that Botha actually doing all that
to get the drive that keep by Mr. Zhou. He never thought that he will be the victim and
chase by the police. The police accused him the cause of the building in fire till Mrs.
Sawyer said that his husband has nothing to do with the fire and give statement that she

saw Botha and his team got into their house and put something suspicious that might
cause the fire.

Form all the character that we see in this movie, Skyscraper, we can conclude that
Mr. Zhou has the strongest ethical arguments. He is the one who caused the messed up
that caused the building into the fire. People and even his workers have no idea that he
keeps something that Botha wanted till finally he decided to set the building into fire as
that is the only way to get reach the Mr. Zhou. Even police did not expect why Botha and
his team attack the building and threat Sawyer’s family life. Mr. Zhou is the one who did
all the transaction to his bank account and choose to not corporate with Botha and being
selfish where he never thought what will happen caused by his action. Mr. Zhou actually
can deal with Botha to solve their conflict earlier so that the fire would not happen and
threat the Sawyer’s family. Zhou should clarify everything before he starts with The Pearl
project, he has to think about other’s life and think further what might happen if he still in
conflict with Botha, but unfortunately, he trying to escape and save himself and stay still
in his secret office and not move forward to be responsible for what he done.

Here we can see that, there is another side of Mr. Zhou that actually people do not
know even Sawyer know about it at the end of the movie while the building in the serious
fire. Mr. Zhou chose to keep quiet and not confront with Botha, trying to solve the
problem. He should think about Sawyer’s family and the public that stay near the
building what if the fire cause danger to them and cause death and so on. We can see that
Mr. Zhou actually practising the unethical things here. He should give the illegal
transactions that he made to the authority earlier and build the building (The Pearl) in
correct way so that the building will not get into fire and threat the Sawyer’s family life
and make police think that Mr. Sawyer is the one who caused the mess.

2.4 Ethical decision making: decide on the best solution to resolve the ethical
issue/dilemmas in the movie and justify your decision using the moral

 principle of utilitarianism, moral rights, justice, ethics of care, religious or
virtue ethics.

Based on the movie that we have been chosen Skyscraper, the movie has various
type of ethical issue/dilemmas happened in the movie and below is the solution that we
come out by using the moral principle. All the ethical issue/ dilemmas from answer Q2.2.

1. Pablo Schreiber as Ben (Betray)

Firstly, we can see the ethical problem from the first character call Ben, he being
so self-centred. From the beginning of the story we can see what he intention when he
introduce Will Sawyer to Mr Zhou. From this moment Ben have been violated Will
Sawyer moral rights. He using Will Sawyer so he can get access to the tablet without
Will knowing anything.

The definition of Moral rights is various, such as everyone in this world have
rights that all human being everywhere possess to an equal extent simply by virtue of
being human beings. Moral rights can be violated when “no one is hurt”. When Ben
using Will Sawyer for his own convenient even though Will is not hurt in any term is still

privacy.

Ben also using the concept of negative rights. It shown whenever Will Sawyer ask
him what happened and want to help Ben but Ben just ignore it and say everything ok
and it all in the past. He did not want to share his problem with Will Sawyer and do what
he thinks is the best for himself.

According to Kant’s Categorical Imperative (Second Version) which is ‘Act in

such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person
of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end’. Or treat
any people only as a means, but always also at the end. Which brings means, we should
treat each human being as a friend and rational person. And this unethical behaviour
show when Ben help Will Sawyer to get the job as a head security in The Pearl building.

He only doing it because he wants the tablet that Mr Zhou will give to Will Sawyer if he
got the job and he will kill Will Sawyer after he got the tablet. That his only motive.

One of the best solution we can came with all the unethical behaviour that Ben
have done is best should just be honest with Will Sawyer, that he in desperate situation
and they can solve the problem together. Besides that, Ben can just come out to Mr Zhou
and ask for his help. This include honesty in friendship and honesty as a worker. With all
the unethical things that Ben have done he deserve to receive Retributive justice that
requires the just imposition of punishments and penalties. According to Law Ben can be
jailed and pay the prescribed fines.

2. Kones Botha (Intruder)

Botha is one of Mr Zhou business partner but it does not last long enough because
there some misunderstanding between them. Botha character in this movie have doing a
lot of unethical things in the movie.

Firstly, it can be seen from the perceptive of honesty. Botha and his team plan to
burn out the whole building. Even after he see Will family in the building but he just lied
to them by saying that they are the securities of The Pearl building. He does not consider
about the safety of Will Sawyer family and not bother to telling them the truth. We can
assume that Botha does not have any moral standards in himself. Moral standards can be
defined as norms about the kind of action that are morally rights and wrong, as well as
the value placed on what is morally good or bad. Because of the decision that Botha
made, it can bring injuries and death to Will Sawyer family.

Botha also have violated Mr Zhou legal rights when he hired someone to hack the
security system for The Pearl building. Legal rights are an entitlement that derives from a
legal system that permits or empowers a person to act in a specified way or required
others to act in certain ways towards that person. Hacking is a wrongdoing and the person
that involve in hacking can be jail and pay fined.

Besides that, Botha also blackmailing Will Sawyer with his family which is his
daughter (Georgia). This action shows that Botha does not have ethics of care. Botha
does not care for people that dependent on and related to him. He just wants his objective

to be achieve. Furthermore, Botha also blackmailing Will Sawyer because he wants Will
Sawyer to do something for him. Botha just using Will Sawyer for his own convenient,
and this is opposite with the concept of moral rights.

Hacking is wrongdoing and a criminal itself. But despite know the fact Botha still
hire someone to hack the system of The Pearl building. The hacker that follow Botha
order can end up in a jail or be fined by the government. Botha does not care about what
will happened to the hacker, he does not have any sympathy towards anyone.

From the above statements, we can assume Botha character does not have
morality in this movie. Morality is depend on ourselves because there is no guideline
about morality, whether it wrong or rights it depend on us. All the honesty and
wrongdoing can be solved if everyone have morality in their self. By all the wrongdoing
that Botha have commit, he deserves a punishment according to the law of the
government. Botha also need to learn how to develop one of Kohlberg’s Three level of
Moral Development that start when he still a kid until the end of his life. It’s never late to
learn about moral until we achieve the moral virtue.

3. Will Sawyer (make unappropriated decision)

Will Sawyer is the main character in this movie. Even though, there still unethical
action that he did. Firstly, we can see the unethical behaviour he did is when he steals the
police motorcycle and run away. From this action he already violated the legal rights of
governments (police officer). Also Will Sawyer does not use the concept of
utilitarianism. The concept of utilitarianism is where the action should be evaluated on
the basis of the benefit and costs they will impose on society. He does not value the life
of civilian when he steals and run away from the police. It can cause injury or death of
civilian. He only thinks about his family. The injured of society have more impact if
compare to Will Sawyer family. Will Sawyer should know which action that he does will
bring more benefit to the society.

Everyone love their family and will do anything for their family safety. Will
Sawyer action by climbing the wall of The Pearls is something dangerous. Will Sawyer
have the rights to do what he can to save his family but some action need to be stop if it

can bring harm to other. One of the concept of moral rights is there is no total freedom in
this world. We need to control certain people. Need to provide a basis for justifying one’s
action and for invoking the protection or aid of others. Some action need to be judge with
morality.

As solution for Will Sawyer action he need to treasure himself more and his
surroundings. He need to thinks of other before doing anything. The concept of
utilitarianism should be use rationally before doing something. Will Sawyer should learn
how to be patient. Besides that, Will Sawyer also need to know that justice will come if
he did nothing wrong and trust the police officer more.

4. Inspector Wu & Sergeant Han

Both the police officer inspector Wu and Sergeant Han play an important role in
this movie. When Will Sawyer climb the wall of The Pearl building they just watch from
the monitor of the CCTV. This action is the opposite with the concept of no total freedom
in this world in aspect of moral rights. What Will Sawyer doing is something that can
bring harm to himself and other citizen. So as police officer they need to do something to
stop Will Sawyer.

It never been a good strategy to judge someone by the appearance or by instinct.

Sergeant Han have no trust towards Will Sawyer wife. She suspects that Will Sawyer and
his wife work together to do some criminal action. Because of that reason she does not
believe anything that Will Sawyer wife say. This action by Sergeant Han differ from the
concept of ethical behaviour. Before any judgment taken place, need to do some research
first.

As police Officer that have receive proper trainings, the action both Inspector Wu
and Sergeant taken is not rational. The steps of ethical behaviour does not imply here.
The segregation of duty also missing here. Inspector Wu who have the higher rank in
police officer should be able to control his people much better.

 5. Criminal Activities and Wrongdoings

As a worker or owner of company (The Pearl), everyone should uphold the good
name and reputation whether in office hour or after. We should not engage or be involved
in any behaviour or activities that may be categorised as tarnishing the image of company
(The Pearl) or subversive or commit any criminal offence punishable under the law of the
country in which the business is conducted.

If we are found to be involved in any behaviours or activities that may be

categorized as subversive or commit any wrongdoing, criminal or otherwise that may be
detrimental to the image and reputation of company (The Pearl), it shall deal with in
accordance with the company disciplinary policies and procedures and or liable in the
court of law.

6. Perceptive of the civilian toward The Pearl

The Pearl is the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong. This building stands at 3,500
feet (1,100m) and 225 stories tall. Although the building is structurally complete, the
construction process still undergoing for the top building, and yet still opened to the
public.

With the construction of the building in the Hong Kong town, it will bring many
benefit to the people that live around the building. It can attract many outsiders to come
and visit the tallest building in Hong Kong. The building not only consist of residential at
the top building, but also shopping complex at the lower building.

It will bring benefit to civilian that need to find work, because along with the
construction of the building it brings along the opportunity of new work. For example, in
the shopping complex and construction site.

But, not everyone gets benefit from this opportunity. Many small shop around the
building will face some hardship to attract more customer. It seems like the owner of the
building have been applied the concept of negative right. The negative rights can be

defined wholly in terms of the duties of other have to not interfere in certain activities of
the person who holds a given right.

They did not consider what will happen to the people around them. Will it be
hard for them to make money or not? Will they interfere with the society life? Will the
construction of the building bring more harm to the society?

Maybe the only solution that we can suggest is by doing some research before
make any action. Maybe the owner of The Pearl can conduct some research about what
will happen to the civilian around if The Pearl is build. But is rare for a company to
conduct a research like that because it will increase the cost of investment. In other word
its quite impossible to solve the issue.

the movie can be resolved.

Ethics is a requirement for human life. It is our means of deciding a course of

action. Without it, our actions would be random and aimless. There would be no way to
work towards a goal because there would be no way to pick between a limitless number
of goals. Even with an ethical standard, we may be unable to pursue our goals with the
possibility of success. To the degree which a rational ethical standard is taken, we are
able to correctly organize our goals and actions to accomplish our most important values.

Ethics or moral philosophy is important. Why is ethics important? Ethics is

important because is the rational conversion between conscious creatures on how they
should interact with each other, the meaning of life, and how the system of justice,
goodness and immorality should be understood and practiced in the world or nation. The
importance of ethical behavior relative to moral behavior must be judged according to the
context in which the actions are pursued, the practicality of pursuing ethical actions in
lieu of moral actions and the potential effects either ethical or moral actions may have
upon the recipients of such actions.

suggestions to overcome the ethical problems that have taken place in our research
findings, in the movie Skyscraper. It has a great value in human personal and professional
life both. Everything is directly or indirectly depends on ethics. If you have all the
qualities and you do not have good ethics to respect and understand other emotions, then
will not be able to connect and enjoy the world. To maintain a good relationship either
you partner, family, friends, in your workplace or anyone else ethics plays a great role in
human life.

Moral values are important in life because if a person has never learned about
moral values then how can he/she decide between the good and the bad. Moral values
reflect an individual’s character and spirituality. They help in building good relationships
in personal as well as professional lives. They can help in eradicating problems like
dishonesty, violence, cheating, jealousy from one’s life. Not only this, they can counter
bad influences in society like violence, crimes, agitations and other than that. They can
help you deal with tough situations in life. They can be a key to self-motivation. Some of
the most important values can be honesty, hard work, respect for others or kindness.

Loyalty

Everyone needs friends. Friends are the people we trust, the people we confide in,
the people that understand accept us as who we are. How many people can you say would
stay by you through tough times? How many would lend you a shoulder to cry on?

Life is tough, and there are always people that we can rely on, and that rely on us.
The world was made big so no one would be alone. Loyal friends are the ones who see us
as someone precious to them and will not abandon us. Even if they have to suffer with us.
Loyalty is what binds us together, what makes us endure through hardship just for that
one person. Loyalty is a choice, and true friends are those willing to venture into the
unknown with us. However, from the character Ben that is Will Sawyer friend from FBI
Hostage Rescue team leader, his betrayed the relationship has been build a long time ago.

It is not easy to find lifelong friends. It is even harder to find those who are loyal
to you not because of a sense of duty, but because they want to. Not everyone can do it.

We all know what it feels like to be disrespected. We may not remember exactly

ethics in countries around the world.

Being polite is about honouring dignity. It is a practical way of showing

Politeness is not about being formal. It’s about being considerate, and there are many
behaviors that social workers can include in their interactions to show concern for other
people’s needs and feelings. In this movie we can see the policeman do not trust Sarah,
wife Will Sawyer’s. The policeman should hear and not to jump the conclusion to that
situation. He not respects the decision of Will Sawyer’s to safe the Pearl and his family.
Here we can begin to see the difficulty that an ethical life implies. Treat everyone
equally. Equality is a cornerstone of most Western democracies, where all individuals are
afforded the same rights. This is not possible without the majority of citizens behaving in
a moral manner. After all, treating one person with respect may come into conflict with
your responsibilities to another certainly and being honest with someone is not always the
most respectful thing you can do.

Responsibility

This is being reliable in your obligations. One of our biggest problems is that we
don’t like to fail and, more importantly, we don’t like to be seen to fail. The problem with
that train of thought, however, is that we then tend to set ourselves a goal but at the same
time we create an excuse to keep as a ‘spare card’ we can use so that if we don’t succeed
we can blame something or somebody else.

the more control we have, the more likely we will reach our goal as there will be no
excuses to fall back on if we fail. In a particularly disturbing scene, a father blows

from Will Sawyer’s. His sacrifice his life just for protect his family. Therefore, taking
responsibility for our actions equals success. It also makes us feel good about ourselves

In Will Sawyer’s character as he selflessly risks his life, time and time again, to
save each member of his family. When you see something happening in the workplace

are you afraid of? Retribution, disapproval, your image, damaged relationships, or simply
the unknown? Courage is about setting aside your fear and taking action for the good of
yourself or someone else.

Kindness

Not everyone associates ethics with kindness. We think of it as part of good

manners or civility. From the perspective of humanity ethics, the essence of love
transcends the mere emotional level and involves the combination of both the moral
emotions and the practical reason. The eventual and ultimate aim of moral education is
not to produce the rigid and perfect moral rules or principles, but to help the people with
the originally good human nature to become the best of themselves. What matters most is
not the better moral principles, but the better people. Will Sawyer’s is the model of self-
reliance, which also leads to a bizarre kind of selfishness. On the one hand, he has a clear

his own. He doesn’t try to get help, he doesn’t try to recruit people to his cause, and he’s

To successfully educate and cultivate the morally better people, we need to pay
more attention to the emotional development of each individual moral agent. But as far as
the virtue of humanity is concerned, it is sometimes referred to as a particular kind of
virtue, having the similar meaning as the virtue of benevolence, and sometimes as a
general or perfect virtue. This kind of ambiguity has to some extent weakened its
practical value in the practice field of virtues. The fundamental reason why the kindness
ethics is proposed as an alternative approach to virtue ethics is largely because its essence
and practical values are more concrete and definite.

As conclusion, the importance of ethical behavior it has many factor. For citizens,
even for those of us with no aspirations in a career in law enforcement, morality and
integrity are important characteristics to demonstrate. We instinctively know that it is
good to be moral and act with integrity, but by coming to an understanding of the reasons
for morality and integrity, we will be motivated to champion such behaviour. Among the
reasons to be moral and integral, regardless of occupation are to make society
better. When we help make society better, we are rewarded with also making better own
lives and the lives of our families and friends. Without moral conduct, society would be a
miserable place.
