What Do You Stand For?

At the start of the unit, the class explored the meaning behind the question “What
do you stand for?” Some of the topics discussed included: Why do people judge
others? What will people fight for? We also discussed important causes such as justice,
peace, bullying, freedom, and equality. We examined the role race, religion, and faith
play in perspective.

Unit questions​​ included:

1. How does perspective influence literature as well as one’s own view of the
world?
2. How does language affect a story?
3. How can writing help a cause?
4. Although uncomfortable, why is it important to read and discuss books about
tragic events in history?

Assignment: As a culminating assignment for this unit, you will write and present
a speech which answers the question “What do you stand for?” You may wish to
answer this question in terms of a cause that you support just as MLK, Wiesel,
and Malala do in their Nobel Peace Prize speeches.

Requirements:
● Answer the question “What do you stand for?”
● Maintain an overall tone of seriousness.
● Your typed speeches​ should be 1-2 pages and should be no longer than 3 to 5
minutes in length.
● Your speech should be written in first person.
● Illustrate direct and indirect allusions (references) to material presented in ​Night.
● Encompass direct and indirect ​allusions ​to world issues related to the issues. You may
also choose to allude to any or all of the three Nobel Peace Prize speeches analyzed in
class.
● You must have both a works cited AND in text citations.
● Use figurative language .
● Explore and answer the above unit questions.
● You do not have to memorize your speech and may have it at the podium when you
present, but you should avoid merely keeping your head down. You should have eye
contact with the audience, show that you’ve practiced the speech, have good posture,
and engage with the audience (meaning you don’t stare off into the distance while
presenting).
