Lesson Idea Name: 2 Step Addition

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two
step word problems by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem. Problems can include contexts that involve adding to, taking from,
putting together/taking apart (part/part/whole) and comparing with unknowns in all
positions

Technology Standard Addressed: Digital citizen

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Ask Dr. Math

URL(s) to support the lesson: http://mathforum.org/dr.math/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: Ask Dr. Math is an online collaboration site where students can seek extra help on their math
problems from an expert online. On this website, students can look for example problems like the problems
they are having trouble with or they can even ask questions on their own if they are still struggling and can
receive an answer from a peer or an expert. This is a very helpful collaboration site for students, especially if
they struggle with math.

To incorporate this in the classroom, students will be able to go to this website to see if they can get certain
problems explained a different way if they are not understanding how to do the problem. Students will be
given the opportunity to go to the computer and seek help on these math problems. Of course, I will also
instruct them on how to do the two step addition problems that we are working on, however they will be able
to seek extra help from Ask Dr. Math. They can even do this at home!

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
A computer with internet access
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The student is using Ask Dr. Math to engage with peers or mentors.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will come up with their own two step addition
problems or seek extra problems from Ask Dr. Math, two students will solve the same problem and if
they get different answers they can look at how to do it on Ask Dr. Math and try again.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students must think about all of the different steps involved in double digit
addition. If needed, the student may also have to model the problem.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The
students will publish their work to Ask Dr. Math so they can help other students who are struggling.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 Simple program
 For those that need help with typing on the computer, we can use extra large print on the keys, for
students who have trouble seeing
 Working in pairs, so students who may not be able to use computer as well can rely on their partner’s
help.
 Collaborative
 Able to get outside help
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
My lesson will be used to help students learn how to do 2 step addition. The students will be able to use Ask
Dr. Math to help them learn how to do it. Ask Dr. Math is simple to use, and is very safe. Students will not have
to share information about themselves in order to use it. If any of their work is especially good or a lot of
students are finding something difficult, I can post it to Dr. Math myself in order to help others. This will also
help me gauge where students are as far as their two step addition goes.
Reflective Practice:
In this lesson, students will learn how to work with others, as well as get a good introduction to using
technology for educational problems. This lesson can be extended to home as well, and even into 2 step
subtraction later in the year.
