Horizontal Translations of Functions HW Name _________________________

1. For the following functions, find the value of the function at the given number, and then write the point
that you know must therefore be in the function.
f(x) = |x| g(x) = |x - 4|
a. What is f(-6)? a. What x-value do you need for g(x) to get the
same y-value that |x| had in part a?

What point is in f(x)? What point is in g(x)?

b. What is f(-4)? b. What x-value do you need to plug in to get the

same y-value that |x| had in part b?

What point is in f(x)? What point is in g(x)?

c. What is f(0)? c. What x-value do you need to plug in to get

the same y-value that |x| had in part c?

What point is in f(x)? What point is in g(x)?

2. Using the three points you generated in #1 for each

of the functions, f(x) and g(x), and your knowledge
of this type of function, fill in other points and draw
a graph of the two functions at right. After that,
write the “moral” of the activity in the space below
here in your own words. It should start off with “If
you,” or “When you,…”

3. In the following problems, you will get a function

and one or more transformations and you will need
to write the new function that results from applying
the transformation(s) to the given function.

a. f(x) = x3 Translated left by 7: b. f(x) = 2x Translated right by 2:

c. h(x) = 1/x Translated left by 4: d. r(x) = √ Translated right by 6:

e. h(x) = √ translated left by 2: f. z(x) = + 3 translated right by 3:

4. Below and at left is a table of values for the function f(x) = x2. The graph of this function is also shown.

x f(x) x w(x)

-2 4 0 4

-1 1 1 1

0 0 2 0

1 1 3 1

2 4 4 4

Examine what is different between f(x) and w(x) in the x-values. What transformation of this function is
represented by the table on the right? Answer below and then Graph w(x) on the grid with f(x) above.

5. Below are two tables that represent other function transformations of f(x) = x2. Examine the tables and
determine what transformations are represented by each table on this graph below.

x v(x) x u(x)

-5 4 -1 4

-4 1 0 1

-3 0 1 0

-2 1 2 1

-1 4 3 4

6. On each graph grid below, graph the parent function and the transformation of the parent function
represented by the function written above the graph grid.
f(x) = - f(x) = - √
