Question 1:
(a) Identify the TWO methods most commonly used for bottom kick handling and
explain the principal difference between them.
(b) Why, in normal circumstances, is the bottom hole circulation pressure greater
than the hydrostatic pressure? Support your reasoning with the relevant equations.
(c) A kick is taken in a vertical well. The SIDPP is 50 psi, SICP 80 psi. Kick size
estimated as 30 bbl. After drilling 20 ft. out of the 9 ⅝” casing shoe, a full leak-off
test was performed using 11.5 ppg mud. A leak-off pressure at surface of 2,600 psi
was determined.
Well Data
9 ⅝” casing set at 8,000 ft TVDRKB
8 ½” hole drilled to 10,300 ft TVDRKB
Hole is in gauge
Well is vertical
Drill stem
270 ft of 6 ¼” drill collars, 2 13/16” ID
375 ft of 5” HWDP, 3” ID
5”, 19.5 lb/ft, S135 Premium drill pipe in use
Pump capacity is 0.119 bbls/stroke (100% pump efficiency)
Slow circulating rate pressure is 300 psi at 25 spm
Mud weight in use 11.8 ppg
Trip margin recommended 0.5 ppg
Capacities
5” DP = 0.01776 bbl/ft
5” HWDP = 0.0087 bbl/ft
6 ¼” DC = 0.0077 bbl/ft
(i) What is the formation break down pressure and fracture gradient at the 9 ⅝”
shoe?
(iii) What is the final mud weight after adding the trip margin?
(iv) Using the single circulation approach, what is the Initial Circulating Pressure?
Assume that the trip margin is not included in the first kill circulation.
(v) What is the Final Circulating Pressure? Assume that the trip margin is not
included in the first kill circulation.
(vi) How many strokes will it take to pump mud from surface to the bit with 100%
pump efficiency? State your assumptions.
(vii)How many strokes will it take to pump mud from surface to the bit with 95%
pump efficiency?
Question 2 (a) Name and briefly describe the function of the main rig systems
which are required to drill a hydrocarbon well.
(b) Outline a simple rotary drilling assembly for drilling a well. Detail the major
parts of the assembly by briefly describing their main function in regard to this
particular operation.
(c) Discuss the THREE well pressure scenarios that may be encountered in well
operations, highlighting the basic pressure relationship in each scenario. Which of
these scenarios is the most difficult to maintain during a drilling operation?
