Overview

The University of Portsmouth is based in a vibrant city location with a lively pub and club scene, as well as being close by to the sea. The University has dedicated
careers and recruitment services, a strong graduate employment record and all courses reflect their commitment to your future career.

Their roots go back to 1869, when the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art was founded. This school was set up to train engineers and skilled
workmen for the Royal Navy dockyard and city docks. Today, the University’s work in neuro-oncology and neuroscience, establishing the role of genes that are
important in developmental processes and its work addressing the fundamental questions in cosmology and astrophysics, is rated as world-leading and
internationally excellent. It also has a growing reputation in health subjects.

The £9-million Dental Academy trains student dentists in their final year at King’s College London in a team-based setting with dental therapists and hygienists.
More than 600 radiographers, paramedics, medical technologists, pharmacists and social workers graduate each year.

The university comprises of more than 40 buildings across the harbour-side city, and has invested heavily into its building and resources over the last ten years.

The University of Portsmouth was awarded a Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework.

Job Prospects

97.5% of Portsmouth graduates are in work or higher education six month after graduation (DLHE, 2017) making it the number one university in the South East
and in the top 10% nationally for graduate progression to employment or further study.

Around half of University of Portsmouth’s courses are accredited or validated by professional organisations, as well as accelerated degree routes.

Work experience is highly encouraged as a key part of each students’ studies, helping them be work-ready and used to professional surroundings after graduation.
This experience includes:

Work-related challenges in a realistic environment (e.g. the university’s mock courtroom and pharmacy, journalism newsroom, forensic house and the Dental
Academy)
Taking part in events with visiting employers
Volunteering placements
Short-term or long-term work experience in a student’s industry of choice
Many Portsmouth students have praised Purple Door, the University’s in-house recruitment agency. Careers and Employability Service source graduate jobs,
part-time work, placements and volunteering opportunities with great success according to students. The university has also championed many business
partnerships for the benefit of the students.

Course and lecturers

Overwhelming feedback from current students suggests that The University of Portsmouth's lecturers are devoted to their students and take great pleasure in helping
them with their academic work. Staff inform their teaching with current research and industry best practices, and all students are allocated a personal tutor to
enhance their learning and opportunities to gain support with their studies.

The University of Portsmouth take pride in the work-related learning experiences as part of every course. To supplement their degree, students can also undertake
additional language classes free of charge, and take advantage of opportunities taking place on campus that can be added to CVs as transferable skills for work.

The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union is charity led and guided by students. Their main objective is ensuring Portsmouth students have the best university
experience possible.

Their role is to:

Make every student’s time at university more comfortable


Provide opportunities to get involved with the student community
Give advice on academic issues and welfare
Organise events and societies

Accommodation

Since September 2016, the University of Portsmouth has been able to offer 90% of home and EU students accommodation in their halls of residents, with much
investment on accommodation in recent years. Current sites include:

Guildhall - in the heart of the city centre and close to all University facilities.

Rees and Burrell - Beachside accommodation a short walk from the University.

Students can choose between staying in catered or self-catering halls with a shared kitchen, unless students are allocated a studio flat, in which case they have a
kitchenette of their own. Prices start at £92 per week.

Catherine House: Opened September 2017. Managed by The Student Housing Company. Centrally located, offering approximately 700 private ensuite rooms split
between cluster flats for 4 to 6 students.

Facilities

The University of Portsmouth clearly has a strong range of facilities available for students to use, though some reviews state they can often become busy and
overcrowded.

Sports facilities have seen lots of investment from the University, with students being able to make ample use of:

Two sports halls


Two dance/martial arts studios
A 100-station gym with CV, resistance and free weights spaces
Squash courts
A synthetic turf hockey pitch
Grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse.

The library gives students access to over 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and microfilms as well as thousands of eBooks, eJournals, and online newspapers. When you
need to study, there are over 1,400 spaces available, with a choice of silent, group or social study areas. There are also 350 laptops you can loan, as well as PCs and
Macs, with wireless access throughout. 2015 saw the completion of a joint £9 million building project between the University and the city’s New Theatre Royal,
which resulted in an innovative new facility aimed at students studying or participating in film, television, sound, broadcasting, drama and musical theatre.

City life

The University of Portsmouth is one of the few UK universities that has the luxury of being in a coastal location with a city-orientated vibe.

There are both ample history sites (particularly maritime-based attractions) as well as modern high streets for shopping and socialising, as well as opportunities to
visit the beach, local art galleries and more. Portsmouth also has the advantage of being flat, which is a great feature for keen cyclists who’d prefer to travel the city
by bike.

By night, there are plenty of gigs, bars, restaurants and clubs to take advantage of, with plenty of student-orientated nights going on throughout the week.

Clubs and Societies

The University of Portsmouth students are hugely appreciative of the range of clubs and societies offered by the university’s Student Union, from academic interests
to more general hobbies.

The Athletic Union, part of the Students’ Union, also offers over 35 sports clubs from football to skydiving. Many of these sporting teams also take part in matches
against other universities.
