Shockwave assisted
needle-free drug
delivery device
AE311 Assignment
Roll no. 160298
Background
● Needle-free, painless and localized drug delivery has been a coveted technology in the
area of biomedical research.
Background
● Needle-free, painless and localized drug delivery has been a coveted technology in the
area of biomedical research.
● An innovative way of transdermal vaccine delivery using a miniature detonation-driven
shock tube device.
The Problem
Therefore, many new alternative non-invasive means of drug delivery have been developed,
which mainly use oral, pulmonary, nasal, buccal or transdermal routes of administration.
The Problem
Therefore, many new alternative non-invasive means of drug delivery have been developed,
which mainly use oral, pulmonary, nasal, buccal or transdermal routes of administration.
Among these, the drug transport through human skin proves to be more advantageous
compared to the other routes due to the ease of administration, immunosurveillance functions
and easy accessibility.
Solution: Use Shockwaves, But How?
● The use of shockwaves as a driving force for transdermal drug delivery has proved to be
effective because of their ability to accelerate the drug particles to high velocities so that
they can penetrate the skin.

● What can we use to generate shockwaves?
○ Compressed Air Bottles
○ Detonable Mixtures
○ Other expensive instruments
Using Detonable Mixture
● The device has been optimized to obtain penetration depths of ~100 μm in the skin.
Using Detonable Mixture
● The device has been optimized to obtain penetration depths of ~100 μm in the skin.
● The device has been optimized to obtain penetration depths of ~100 μm in the skin.
● The ability of the proposed device to produce shockwaves of required strength in a safe,
clean and reproducible manner opens up new opportunities for shockwave-assisted
biomedical research.
