There are some men who seem to be always on the lookout for trouble and, to tell the truth, they are
seldom disappointed. Listening to such men one would think that this world is one of the stormiest
and most disagreeable places. Yet after all it is not such a bad place and the difficulty is often in the
man who is too thinskinned. On the other hand, the man who goes out expecting people to be like
himself, kind and brotherly, will be surprised at the kindness he meets even in the most unlike
quarters. A smile is apt to be met with a responsive smile while the sneer is just as apt to provoke a

2. Replace WOULD HAVE GIVEN by WOULD GIVE in option 'B'. It's a typeII conditional sentence
in which if the verb in the IFCLAUSE is in the past tense (here CAME). the verb in the main clause is
past conditional.
Though the sentence can also be corrected in making change in the 'A' option, but in an error finding
sentence if a sentence can be corrected by making a change in any other part we keep the first part
M
intact. For more on conditional clauses see here:

3. NO ERROR. The noun OFFICE when preceded by the article THE, means one's place of work; e.g.
M
i) He is at/in the office. (Here the person referred to is at his work place, means where he works
or is posted)
U
[In this meaning both IN and AT are correct.]
ii) Are you going to the office today?
R
But when the noun OFFICE is without THE, means the person is holding an official, especially
political, position; e.g.
FO
She held office as a cabinet minister for ten years.
How long has he been in office? (means in power as a minister or so)
AM
[Here you cannot use AT.]
OUT OF OFFICE = to be no longer in power
EX
4. HAS (option 'A'). The verb must agree to the real subject of the sentence. The real subject here,
means main word of the subject, is CHEATING. CHEATING is a gerund, and a gerund always takes a
singular verb.
C
SS
5. IS (option 'A') The subject is HE; YOUR EMPLOYER is just its description. So the verb will be
singular as HE is always singular.
6. WERE (option 'B'). A HANDFUL OF + COUNTABLE NOUN always takes a plural verb.
For more such phrases and examples see point No. 6 here

7. The answer NO IMPROVEMENT is correct. We require 'future perfect' tense (will have+3rd form
of the verb) to say that something will be ended, completed, or achieved by a particular point in the
M
future; which is the case here.
O
See another example:
By the time you get home I will have cleaned the house from top to bottom.
.C
8. THAN (option 'C'). 'no sooner...........than........' is an idiom and is used to say that something
M
happens immediately after something else.
U
9. NO IMPROVEMENT (option 'D'). NEED=to require sth/sb because they are essential or very
R
important, not just because you'd like to have them. e.g., Don't goI need you. Here it means that the
police required him in the armed robbery case.
FO
Though option 'C' (WERE LOOKING TO) is also correct, but in a sentence improvement sentence if
the sentence is already correct, any of the answer options is not to be chosen even if it's correct. LOOK
TO SB FOR STH = to rely on or expect sb to provide sth. See this example: We are looking to you for
AM
help.
