Sustainable Forest Bioenergy Program
• MEMR and the MoEF collaborated to develop forest-based bioenergy which aims to
provide energy crops that can be utilized for power generation, biofuels and other
bioenergy products (pellets, biogas, etc)
• The development of forest-based bioenergy aims to improve community welfare and
provide added value to the community economy through the provision of affordable
and clean energy for electricity and biofuels based on forest resources as well as
contribute to reduce GHG emissions.
• Develop energy forest in Central Kalimantan on degraded land, critical land and
abandoned mining land in Pulang Pisau Regency and Katingan Regency, covering 63
thousand hectares
• Develop Integrated Biomass Power Plant (1 MW) on-grid with support from The
Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry,
Local Government of West Sumba Regency and Private Company of Industrial Forest in
West Sumba Regency
• Preparing MoU and Cooperation Agreement of Energy Forest program in East
Kalimantan and South Sumatera
• The plants used for energy forest will come from non conventional bioenergy
feedstocks to avoid conflicts with food supply

Supporting Policies and Research on Kemiri Sunan
• In December 2013, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Ministry of
Agriculture (MoA) launched a reclamation program for ex-mining degraded land by planting
kemiri sunan for biodiesel in order to support national energy security in Research Institute for
Industrial and Refreshing Crops (Balittri), Pakuwon Sukabumi;
• MoU between MEMR and Local Government of Yogyakarta Province, MoA, Agency for the
Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), University of Pembangunan Yogyakarta and
other related institutions to develop kemiri sunan for biodiesel in 2.000 Ha degraded land;
• In July 2014, MEMR signed and MoU with Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) on
Energy Forest Bioenergy Based Program to optimize the utilization of forest crops for bioenergy
feedstock, both for electricity and biofuel. Following the MoU, MEMR established Cooperation
Forum on Biofuel – Based Kemiri Sunan in October 2014. The forum consists of related ministries
as well as supporting stakeholders;
• MOEF also added Kemiri Sunan in the list of revegetation crops on ex-mining land;
• Roadmap of kemiri sunan made by Indonesian Sweetener and Fiber Crops Research Institute
(Balittas) has targeted that in 2026 will produce high yield transgenic crops of kemiri sunan. So
far, Ministry of Agriculture has released 4 varieties of kemiri sunan.

Aspect on Forest Bioenergy Development
Increase the supply of electricity and fuel by using renewable energy, particularly in the
1 eastern part of Indonesia and remote islands.
2 Substitute Diesel Power and serve as base load (fossil fuel substitution)
3 Use only for feedstock for electricity, biodiesel and / or other bioenergy products
May not increase the national electricity generation cost (will be focused on areas with
4 high concentration of Diesel Power)

“Kemiri Sunan” for Biodiesel
• Kemiri Sunan (Reutealis trisperma (Blanco) Airy
Shaw) is an environmental-friendly plant that
can be used as biodiesel feedstock
• Reduce emission by 85% compare to fossil fuel
• Non-toxic plant and biodegradable
• High Flashpoint that makes the fuel easy to
handle
• Creates jobs to improve the economic
condition of the community and enable the
community to produce their own fuel
• NO CONFLICT with food security

Kemiri Sunan in West Kalimantan
• Kemiri Sunan will be planted in the
area of 5000 ha of Production Forest
in Kabupaten Landak, Mempawah
and Kubu Raya;
• In June 2016, Governor of West
Kalimantan signed MoU with Asia
Pulp & Paper Group (APP) and
Yayasan Belantara to support the
vision of Green Growth in West
Kalimantan and support Forest
Conservation Policy;
• It is expected that Kemiri Sunan in
the Production Forest will produce
Biodiesel around 30.000 – 40.000 ton
per year.
