Wear Limits and
Inspection Top Drive

Normal wear to the load path items will reduce their load carrying capabilities, due to the reduced
cross-sectional area of the components. It is therefore necessary to regularly monitor the wear and
de-rate the Top Drive when necessary.

Regular inspections should include measurements of certain critical areas of the load path items.
These critical areas are shown on the following pages. All areas that are accessible without
disassembly should be measured every six months. Areas requiring disassembly should be
inspected for wear when the components are disassembled for magnetic particle inspections. Refer
to the section on Non-Destructive Examinations for a schedule of such inspections.

The load rating of the Top Drive shall not exceed the lowest de-rated value obtained from the
regular wear inspections. National Oilwell recommends replacing the worn parts when the critical
dimensions fall outside of the ranges given in the following illustrations.

Table 3. Bail De-rating

There is no de-rating data for dimension B. A bushing is pressed into the eye of the Bail and
should be replaced if wear is present. Therefore, the Bail at this area should not show any
indications of wear. If a bushing is worn through and there is evidence of wear on the Bail, the
Bail must be replaced.
