VS151 Design Media 1- INTEGRATED FREEHAND DRAWING
Prototype schedule

Segment one: 3.0 credits


Required for BArch, BID, MArch, MID, BLA, BDS
No prerequisites

Varying approaches to freehand drawing are offered to enhance awareness of the world and gain visual
confidence. The course includes exercises in still life. figure drawing, and perspective sketching to expose
the students to various ways of seeing. Students learn to draw form, objects, and objects in space. The
course explores positi ve and negative space, edges and contours , and the effects of light and shadow.
Students are expected to maintain and develop a sketchbook by drawing at least once a day. The cou rse
integrates analog and digital media through computer exercises.
Media used include: pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, and conte crayon, pastels, colored pencil.

Grading will be based on the following percentages:


Homework Drawings: 40%
Sketchbook: 40%
In-dass drawing and verbal participation: 20%

Attendance:
Absence from three classes may be the grounds for dropping the grade by a letter, absence from
Four leads to failing the class. Please attend and be present for each class.

Materials List

-SOfl vine charcoal (box of 12 at least)

-18 x 24 inches pad (spiral is fine) of paper (Drawing, Sketch or Bristol)

at least 50 sheets
-kneaded eraser
-white vinyl eraser
-chamois cloth
-stumps varied

-sketchbook of preference
5 x 7 inches, spiral bound, hardcover is recommended -at least 100 pages
pencils with sharpening tool, and pens ...

-4 sheets of 18 x 24 inches grey paper

-white and black conte crayon or pastel (oil or water based)

-20 x 26 inches folder/ envelope as a portfolio to keep drawings

-fixatif spray (krylon, for example)
